If you like the idea of a dvd to teach your high school physics course, Wes Olson has the solution – Physics 101. Like the other courses in the 101 Series, Wes Olson offers an engaging visual course rather than having the student read a text. Learn about the physics of our world, historical figures and their contributions and do hands-on labs to help you understand the concepts.

Physics 101 covers concepts in these areas: light and color, mirrors and lenses, invisibility and speed of light, sound, acoustics, fire, thermodynamics, heat and cold, electricity, outlets and circuits, batteries and electromagnetic spectrum, Isaac Newton, Universal Law of Gravity, 1st Law of Motion, 2nd and 3rd Laws of Motion, Albert Einstein, relativity, quantum mechanics and the future of physics. There are 20 segments and a video for each that range in length from 20 to 43 minutes - a total of 11 hours and 10 minutes of video. Options are offered for subtitles and closed captions – a variety of languages are offered.

There are PDFs that you may want to print and are included on the fourth disc (there are four discs in this course). The first pdf is titled, “Course Accreditation Program” and the second is the “Guidebook.” Instructions for opening the pdfs are printed on the face of Disc 1. Print out the files, hole punch them and put them in a notebook for your convenience.

The Course Accreditation Program (CAP) is important information on how to use the course and get high school credit – a syllabus. Physics 101 provides about 135 hours of content, which is enough for one credit in physics. Basically, a lesson includes 4 steps: watch the video lesson, discuss the questions (found in the guidebook), do the mini-labs, research, write a 200-word report and take the segment quiz. The CAP includes all of the information for doing mini-labs – lists, instructions and where to fit them in. Mini-labs use common household items and a master list is found on page 4 of the CAP. You may run across a few unusual items, such as a canned air horn, microphone with jack to plug into your cell phone, magnesium fire starter, volt meter, etc. Items that are less common are marked, and you can skip labs if the items can’t be found; you will find that some sections have no labs and others have multiple. Instructions are included for assembling a student notebook that will be used all year; here students will record, take notes.

The Guidebook is 106 pages and includes the table of contents (showing the segment and chapter divisions), an outline for each segment, discussion questions, quizzes, quiz answers and an alphabetic index.

Physics 101 is a great high school level physics for your visual student or an interesting and informational watch for your family. Presented from a Christian worldview, students will learn about the relationship between science and the Bible in the area of physics. ~ Donna

The subject of physics can strike fear into hearts of parents and students alike, but this curious little book (7.5"x 7.5") presents physics topics in a fun and engaging fashion, making you want to read and learn. Two pages are devoted to each topic and the 10 experiments will help readers apply the concept. The experiments are found throughout the book and may require some special equipment playdough or modelling clay, lithium watch batteries or battery pack, and LEDs are needed to mold a lion with eyes that light up. Use hot water, ice, and aerosol spray to make an indoor cloud, or assemble your own pinhole camera using a potato chip can, tape, and foil. Illustrations are friendly and inviting and explanations are age appropriate for the middle school level. Cool Physics can take the fear out of learning physics concepts and put some fun into the learning. 112 pgs, hc. ~ Donna

Understanding the elements of the Periodic Table can be difficult for chemistry students. This wonderful resource presents a bit of history and lessons of the past concerning the Periodic Table and chemistry; learn about Mendeleev, atomic physics, the Quantum atom, and trends and patterns before jumping into presentations for each of the elements. One to two pages per element will give information on characteristics, uses, and its discovery, along with atomic number, weight, abundance, radius, melting point, boiling point, configuration and the date of its discovery. Pictures and illustrations will keep the reader engaged in the topic at hand. The book is then rounded out with the “Hall of Fame” for scientists and researchers – Albert Einstein, Ernest Rutherford, Glenn T. Seaborg, and others. 192 pgs, pb. ~ Donna

The New Answers Book has been very popular for Christians who want to find quick, detailed, scientifically and biblically accurate answers to common questions about Creationism and Intelligent Design. This second book follows in its steps, answering 30 more questions dealing with Creation/Evolution and the Bible. These questions seem a bit more complex and culturally focused than those in the first book. Using Genesis and science as a basis, the book answers questions ranging from the origin of evil, if evolution fits with the Bible, how a Christian should respond to gay marriage, and if Creationists can believe in physics like relativity, quantum mechanics, and string theory. The book does a good job of showing how the "evolutionizing" of our culture is not just affecting science – it's affecting most aspects of our society. With 30 common questions answered in a concise, intelligent way by various experts in the Creationism field, this book covers an impressive variety of subjects linked to evolution. If you've ever wondered whether anything you do will make a difference, read this book. Dr. Caroline Leaf has written a book that can help you live a healthier and happier life. Based on her work with brain-damaged clients, it reveals a Biblically-based system of focusing and renewing your thoughts that can help you detox and retrain your brain. Whether your problems are physical or psychological, her 5-step program will show you how to literally rewire your brain and align itself with your mind. She teaches us about neuroplasticity - the ability of the mind to change your brain Your brain literally can be transformed (the renewing of your mind) in about 63 days A dedicated scientist and Christ-follower, Dr. Leaf merges neurological scientific discovery seamlessly with the Word and presents fascinating and life-changing evidence that we can use to re-orient and correct our brains. Here are a just a few quotes from that book:

    • • The process of thinking and choosing is the most powerful thing in the universe after God, and it is a phenomenal gift from God to be treasured and used properly.
    • • The law of entanglement in quantum physics states that relationship is the defining characteristic of everything in space and time… …Everything and everyone is linked, and we all affect each other.
    • • You are not a victim of your biology; you can control your reactions to events and circumstances
    • • To detox your thought life, you need to remember it's your thinking that will actually change your brain
    • • …God was so serious about us capturing our thoughts and renewing our minds that he gave us science as encouragement.
    • • When you understand the power of your thought life, [….], you truly begin to get a glimpse of how important it is to take responsibility for what you are thinking.

There is a lot of amazing material here, both scientifically and experientially. Written for the lay person, she explains the latest discoveries about the brain in an understandable and interesting way. The first section of the book delves into the eight "keys" on which her program is based. She explains how the brain works, how your mind can control matter, how your choices impact your brain, how you can "take thoughts captive", why "milkshake-multitasking" is not good for you, why your mind needs directed rest, why you are not a victim of genetics and your environment, and more. The rest of the book explains the daily 5-step detox process in detail and helps you get started. Summaries of key points at the end of each chapter are helpful both for reinforcement and later reference.

If you are feeling burdened by your past, uncertain about yourself, fearful about the future, or in an emotionally hopeless situation, this book could change your life.

Physics can be a hard subject to grasp, but if presentation has anything to do with that, this book could be the answer. In cartoon style, it provides a lighthearted format to a heavy topic. Beginning with motion, the two main characters (a pretty cartoon astronaut, Lucy, and her co-worker, Ringo) present a thorough coverage of physics, including gravity, projectiles, orbits, Newton's laws, forces, momentum, energy, collisions, rotations, charge, electric fields, capacitors, electric currents, magnetic fields, relativity, inductors, AC and DC, quantum electrodynamics, and more. The pages portray the characters demonstrating different concepts in easier-to-understand ways as they explain what is happening. Text (in a cartoonish font) fills in the blanks left by the characters' comments and pictures. A very different - but appealing! - approach to physics. 212 pgs. - Melissa
