Many animals roam the forest looking for food. With this forest food-chain game, learn which animals eat other animals or just what plants they eat. Meanwhile, try to build up your stack of cards. How? By picking up your card, looking at the animal on your card, and trying to "consume" your opponent's card. But watch out! Even if the grizzly doesn't get you—death and decay might! Fun and learning rolled into one with several versions of play. For 2-6 players. Includes full-color illustrations and scorecard.

Fans of the Into the Desert Game, will enjoy this fun twist that focuses on the desert ecosystem. Includes full color illustrations, a full color poster of the desert habitat and glossary/bibliography. Unique learning tool for understanding the desert biome. ~ Deanne

What could be a more appropriate activity to accompany your study of Ancient Egypt than making your own papyrus? This kit includes instructions and enough strips of Egyptian papyrus stem to create one sheet of papyrus. The process takes several days, and a lot of soaking, but when you're done, you can use your sheet of authentic papyrus for your own unique Egyptian work of art, or a scroll! Please note that this kit does have a distinctive salty, dried-plant "aroma" which may be more offensive to some noses than others. ~ Jess

This fast-paced card game takes only about 15 minutes to play, and familiarizes players with food chains in four different ecosystems: Pacific Ocean, American Prairie, Amazon Rainforest and Sahara Desert. The cards represent plants, omnivores, herbivores and carnivores from each of those biomes, numbered 1-5. Each player can stack cards in order to develop a food chain in any two biomes at a time, but action cards like “Migration,” “Invasion” or “Scavenge” can disrupt play! After players have at least three cards in their biome stacks, they can “bank them” or set them aside for points. Play continues until cards are exhausted, and the winner is the players with the most points. For 2-4 players.

Another excellent entry into the “science + fun” category of board games! The goal of Photosynthesis is to grow a thriving forest of trees by strategically planting them around the hexagonal “forest-to-be.” The soil is variegated from a tan exterior to a deep green interior; trees closer to the center earn more points when their life cycles end. Play begins as players plant two small trees of their own color along the exterior edge. Each turn consists of two phases: Photosynthesis and Life Cycle. The first rotates the “sun” and generates “Light Points” for each tree in direct sunlight (1 for small trees, 2 for medium, and 3 for large). But beware! As the sun travels around the board, every tree casts a shadow, preventing trees behind from earning points. So, while having trees in the middle is beneficial, it’s also risky, as opponent’s taller trees (and yours!) will often sap light points from those closer to the center. The second phase, Life Cycle, allows players to buy seeds, plant seeds next to their trees, and end the life cycle of large trees to collect Scoring Tokens. Once the sun makes 3 revolutions around the board, the game ends, and the player with the most points from Scoring Tokens and Light Tokens wins! For 2-4 players. 30-60-minute playtime.

Some of the best stories are the ones that come from real people in history. One such story starts with a boy who was raised a Quaker in the Pennsylvania region before the founding of the United States. Benjamin West enjoyed painting so much he did what most would never think of doing: He made paint from clay, plants, and dirt, and fashioned paintbrushes from the tail of his cat, Grimalkin! Follow the great American writer Marguerite Henry as she traces the early years of this young man and his cat in this exciting tale. 147 pgs, pb. John
