If you need extra practice sheets or activities for your science students, look no further. This workbook is full of 100 reproducible worksheets that cover a wide range of topics dealing with physics and chemistry. From lab procedures, to physical and chemical properties, to simple machines, to writing binary formulas, this book covers it all. Several various testing methods are used such as matching, puzzles, short answer, long answer, completing equations, etc. Besides giving a few example answers, this book does not provide explanations: it is only meant to provide practice or assessment. Teachers can go through the whole book with students to test their overall knowledge, or they can pick and choose topics which students need additional help or practice with. This book would be a great supplement to any physical science course. Aligns with current state standards. ~ Rachel S.

While science experiment books abound, it can be difficult to find good workbooks for science. So, while I usually get excited about science resources, I was particularly pleased to discover this one. Intended to give students more practice and exposure to what is a weak area for U.S. students, this book covers a nice breadth of physical science concepts with a strong mathematical component. The 12 chapters include: molecules, compounds, chemistry, states of matter, mass, weight, gravity, density, Newton's Laws of Motion, simple machines, vectors, electricity, light refraction and reflection, waves, and Kepler's Laws. Chapters vary in length from 3 to nearly 20 pages, with each chapter featuring single pages that include a paragraph or two on the topic and an exercise below. While some of the activities are short answer or fill-in-the-blank, quite a few of them are math-related. In the chapter on simple machines, the first page discusses work, while the following activity gives the reader several situations and asks if work has taken place. The next part moves on to measuring work, using the work equals force times distance equation. Students spend the next two pages calculating work done using both the English and metric system. And if the worksheets in the book aren't enough for you, keep reading. A CD-ROM is included with the book that contains interactive PDF worksheets, additional printable (non-interactive) exercises and reading exercises (which focus on scientific vocabulary) for each chapter. If your current physical science program is weak in the math area, or if you're looking for additional practice, this workbook from Mark Twain Media is a solid choice and is very reasonably priced for the amount of content. Answer keys included, reproducible, 126 pgs, pb. – Jess

Introduce children to the power of the sun! This kit contains everything necessary to build a working solar powered rover. Once built, the rover will drive forward and backward (no steering mechanism). Children will learn the intrinsic power of the sun as they see, firsthand, the rover in action. Backup power generator included for extended play. While designed for older children to complete independently, younger children will enjoy the experience with an older sibling or parent. This truly is environmental science for all ages! ~ Deanne

If the Physics Workshop from Thames & Kosmos is more kit than you really want, try the lite version, Physics Discovery. At half the price of Physics Workshop, this kit still gives you more than 100 pieces with which to build 12 models. Build a balance beam to learn about leverage or a freight elevator to investigate pulleys. Make a motion picture machine to find out about centripetal and centrifugal forces, and a transmission to discover the workings of gears. The 48-page instruction manual provides photographic directions, background information, and full-color pictures of how a similar machine is used in real life. Colorful punchout covers dress up some of the finished products. And when you decide to upgrade to Physics Workshop, all of these pieces are compatible.

There it was: Physics Workshop. I swear I saw fireworks. Physics is one of my favorite subjects; I love learning about how and why objects move like they do. And what better way to do it than through something as hands-on as this? With 305 colorful pieces, 37 experiments, and 36 building projects, you're sure to be learning for quite a while. A 64-page booklet lays it all out for you, from assembly instructions to fun activities. Some of the experiments made me wish I had the time to pop the kit out right there and just rip into it, but, alas, other products require reviews today. Building things is a major part of this kit, as it helps students actually see the physics in action, rather then just read about it in a textbook. Several activities caught my interest, like what degree to throw a ball to reach maximum distance, or why you balance better on a moving bike. I wish I had had this when I was 8. ~ Mark

Physics can be a hard subject to grasp, but if presentation has anything to do with that, this book could be the answer. In cartoon style, it provides a lighthearted format to a heavy topic. Beginning with motion, the two main characters (a pretty cartoon astronaut, Lucy, and her co-worker, Ringo) present a thorough coverage of physics, including gravity, projectiles, orbits, Newton's laws, forces, momentum, energy, collisions, rotations, charge, electric fields, capacitors, electric currents, magnetic fields, relativity, inductors, AC and DC, quantum electrodynamics, and more. The pages portray the characters demonstrating different concepts in easier-to-understand ways as they explain what is happening. Text (in a cartoonish font) fills in the blanks left by the characters' comments and pictures. A very different - but appealing! - approach to physics. 212 pgs. - Melissa
