This classic by John Steinbeck tells of the Dust Bowl migration during the Great Depression. While every other chapter gives background and follow the movements of the migrants as a whole, the other chapters chronicle the fictional Joad family's long, discouraging exodus to California after they are driven off of their homestead. They have a handbill from California which reads: "Pea Pickers Wanted in California. Good Wage All Season. 800 Pickers Wanted." This handbill gives the family hope through their hard trip to California, and they read it again and again. But over time, the Joad's lose hope as they see more and more families, all waving similar handbills, all poor and broken down, all headed to California on highway 66. There the Joads begin to understand the hopelessness of their situation - and that of all migrant workers.

Subtitled, The Autobiography of John Newton. At a friend’s request, Newton originally told his conversion story from a life of slave trading and sin through 8 letters. These were later published: he was willing to share his story if God would be glorified and Christians encouraged. These two remain his ultimate goals, although he relays his life before Christ without diminishing the evil of it. Newton understood and retained the belief that he was a sinner and also an object of God’s grace, evidenced in his writing of “Amazing Grace,” one of the most widely known Christian hymns. This revised autobiography seeks to balance the original 18th century language and writing style with more modern word choice and grammar. Included are referenced Scripture, textual notes, a brief biographical sketch, a few black and white photographs/drawings and the full text of the hymn. 5.5” x 8.5”, 160 pp, sc.

This simple game is easy to learn and requires basic math skills, some strategy, and maybe just a little luck. Each player is dealt four cards, and a "Tip Top" card is uncovered. Each turn, every player must lay down a new card on the pile begun on the "Tip Top" card, add the number on his or her card to the current total, and announce it to the other players. Depending on the cards, players may also be able to subtract from the total, multiply the total, change the direction of play, or even choose a new "Tip Top" card to play on that round. If players cannot play a card without exceeding the "Tip Top" total number, they must give up one of their four chips and is out of that round. The next round, they are dealt one card less and must play their card after the other players have gone. Play continues until only one player is left - the winner! This game reminds me of Uno combined with math-type card games, but looks fast-paced and fun. - Jess

This survey course is intended to be "a journey through the basics of the Christian faith." The program is divided into 30 lessons and assumes a group setting with an instructor and multiple students. The first unit is seven lessons on the Bible, and the next seven are on church history. Four lessons cover the major doctrines of the Christian faith, with the next three discussing the defense of your faith (apologetics). Four lessons discuss other religions and the occult, three discuss our current age (the postmodern culture) and the last two help the student to become a more effective witness.

The course materials consist of a book with perforated pages and a CD-ROM. Both the instructor pages and the student pages are in this book. Instructor pages give teaching directions, basic material that the teacher should present in class, and sometimes charts or a quiz with answer key. The instructor may want to flesh out the information to be presented in class with additional research. (This will certainly be necessary with the section on other religions, as almost no material is included here.) Student pages contain additional information (different from the information in the teacher pages). The CD-ROM includes PDF's of appropriate maps (also shown in the book) and the student pages.

As mentioned at the outset, this is a survey course, so the course is covering a lot of ground and not going into much depth. Besides being used as a Sunday School class, the course could serve as a 1-year refresher for a high school student before going off to college. sc, 291 pgs.

Even the most creative writer appreciates a good writing prompt! This book writes like a journal. It’s not a fussy one with lots of curlicues and color, no, this one has white pages with simple black type and lines. The topics are current such as: what’s your favorite viral video? And what do you like about it? There is only space for a paragraph on that one. A longer prompt, where you are given a page to write would be: you catch a stranger stealing from your school. What do you do? What if it’s actually your friend who is stealing? Other topics include homework, music, and your perfect day. There are hundreds of prompts here. This would appeal to boys or girls, in both the topics and appearance of the book. 7x9”, sc. ~Sara
