Research-based activities in an easy-to-use workbook, whether you have 1 student or a whole class. The author identifies 5 stages of new language acquisition to help you understand the process your student is going through. Exercises provide opportunities to practice oral language skills, and games offer a fun platform to review language and grammar. Each lesson begins with a list of vocabulary words to learn and practice. Then you have a scene incorporating the new words. The teacher is given several sample questions to ask to make the vocabulary meaningful to the student. Pages are reproducible. There are 8 units: land forms, family, world/US geography, technology, health/fitness, safety, animal adaptations/habitats, & plants. In the back are paper word cards to cut out and use in your lessons. This would be helpful to anyone working with a non-native speaker. Pb, 168pp. ~ Sara

These 100 reproducible activity sheets are great daily exercises for extra language practice. The format is consistent throughout the pages. Each page holds three separate exercises. At the top of the page is a short story, in which six vocabulary words are underlined and followed by blanks. Below the passage are the six definitions, lettered a-f. As students read through the passage, they write the letter of the correct definition in the blanks after the words. The middle section contains a list of six words for students to practice spelling and writing. The section at the bottom of each page gives six phrases or words for students to replace with a new word. For example, "to move like a rubber ball" or "beautiful." Students would then respond by writing something such as "bounce" and "pretty" on the blanks provided. 112 pgs. - Melissa

Instead of teaching single words, this book takes a different approach. After introducing the alphabet, this book goes into useful conversations so you can say more than a string of non-related words right from the get-go. The conversations are grouped into chapters. For example, the first chapter is titled, "Getting Acquainted." Then, pictures of two children illustrate a conversation. The same two children are featured throughout the book, and their conversations cover introductions, family and friends, food and health, clothes and shopping, pets, animals and colors, educations, sports, special occasions, and emergency situations. Every few pages, there are exercises to quiz your knowledge. Instead of learning words, learn how to make sentences and be able to communicate, even as a beginner. ~ Melissa

A lighter, more enjoyable approach than your typical grammar lesson. Every lesson begins with a sentence that breaks the rule for that lesson, resulting in a humorous sentence, to show students what happens when you don't follow the language rules. Then, by applying the rule, the same sentence is written correctly. Guided activities follow to give the student practice at applying the rule. Even more practice is given in fun, independent exercises in which the student interprets logic clues to utilize the newly learned rule. Topics covered include capitalization, run-on sentences, agreement, modifiers, pronouns, verbs, unnecessary words, punctuation, spelling, vocabulary and more. Answers are provided, and worksheets are reproducible for your own use. ~ Stephanie

Children learn differently, that is just a fact. Parents and teachers often have to teach a concept to an audience with a variety of learning styles. So how can one instructor meet the needs of so many learners (even 2 or 3) without having to come up with several different lesson plans? Ta da! Here is a reproducible workbook with over 375 differentiated activities for language arts! Each page has a concept at the top followed by a grid of 9 exercises. Your student(s) will choose as many of the squares to complete as you assign (do 5 of the 9 for example.) Students will gravitate to the problems which appeal to their learning style. Each grid is accompanied by a practice page. This can be completed after you have discussed the lesson or use it as an assessment to check understanding. 42 grids in all cover reading comprehension, literary response, word analysis, fluency, vocabulary, writing conventions/applications, reference skills, spelling and more. Use these fun pages as a warm up activity, homework, center time or free time. Answers are in the back. 92pp, pb ~ Sara

Primary Language Lessons is one of those engaging programs first published long ago that many have used and loved and said "if only". If only the book would lay flat. If only the course had room for the student to write. If only I didn't have to explain why "tomorrow" has a hyphen after the "o". If only there were some information about the authors and artists. If only this art print were a little clearer – or a little bigger. This newest version will sweep away all your "if onlys". And, the really good news is that none of the well-loved features of the original have disappeared. Content – right down to all the high quality art and literature – is virtually the same, except for those few updates and edits done to provide more clarity. Each lesson still introduces principals of grammar and word use through question and answer dialogue, composition, memorization, oral presentation, and dictation. There's even a few added features you might not have thought to include in your litany of "if onlys." Cute little icons have been added to each segment of the lesson to designate its purpose – read, write, memorize, copy, tell/narrate, or study. Tear-out pages in the back provide copies of all the dictation passages. Lots of lined space for all written assignments is provided. My favorite feature is the fourteen pages of biographical notes on most of the authors and artists found in the back. 258 pgs, coil-bound ~ Janice

Have you ever used a book and just kept thinking about the changes you would make? Perhaps that was the experience of Margot Davidson. Taking a classic – Primary Language Lessons by Emma Serl – she tweaked it just a bit. The result is all the warmth of the original with just a little more practicality, more beauty, and more applicability. The same wonderful balance between oral and written work has been preserved along with all the basic elements – copywork/dictation, picture study, memorization selections, grammar sequences, and composition. Some of the pictures are now in full color, and some are changed to appeal more to young readers. Also, some changes were made to bring it in line with today's English. Already flexible (could be used as either a full third grade course or spread over second and third grade), some of the exercises toward the end of the 164 lessons have been broadened, making them more appropriate for students at the end of third grade. Perhaps the most noticeable change is the typesetting, which is modern; the pages having much more "white space" and an added coil-binding making it so much easier to use for copywork or for "teacherwork." ~ Janice

Want to avoid a heavy academic approach to language arts for the young student? This is the book for you! Packed with a year's worth of creative language activities, it is recommended for parents who chose to delay formal academics. The book is co-authored by Dr. Ruth Beechick, a strong supporter of age-appropriate learning methods. Rather than relying heavily upon workbooks, the book suggests ideas that encourage the student to explore language orally. Turn everyday events into valuable learning experiences. One of our customers describes this book as "refreshing," "enjoyable" and "a real bargain."

"The Basics - For Beginners or Anyone Who Wants a Thorough Review." This course is a no-frills look at Spanish utilizing the conversation building-block method. Everything you need is included in this handy little pack including a Spanish-English dictionary, a coursebook, and 4 audio CD's. The coursebook is divided into 40 lessons, which are fairly short and very do-able. All the words in bold faced type are pronounced on the audio CD's so you can learn the correct pronunciation. Notes scattered generously throughout the lessons explain pronunciation, rules and other information. Most lessons include one or two quizzes for you to practice what you've learned. The quizzes are generally formatted with matching exercises where you match Spanish phrases to English phrases and fill-in-the-blank with multiple choices of Spanish words to fill in a Spanish phrase (the English version of the word is next to the blank in parentheses). Answers are easily accessible at the end of each quiz section. The included Spanish-English dictionary is comprised of over 20,000 of the most frequently used Spanish words and the audio CD's contain over 3 hours of recorded material. This course has been recently updated and changes include the addition of 18 supplemental vocabulary sections and updated references including e-mail etiquette and Internet resources. ~ Megan

Modern second language acquisition has a different focus now than in past years; newer computer courses emphasize speaking & listening over the older reading & grammar method. This book is old school Spanish, literally. It is reprint of an original Spanish text for American students from about 1923. The old book was scanned, so the print looks vintage. If you are a fan of old textbooks or are learning Spanish but prefer a more traditional method than a computer, here is an option. The lessons assume you have a fluent instructor and begin with the alphabet and basic sounds. 610 pages walk you through basic grammar, ser & estar, formality, numbers, time, pronouns, comparing, negative, subjunctive, conditional future and more. By the end of this book, you will have covered about the same content as a modern first-year Spanish course. It is not the engaging & interactive presentation many students are accustomed to, and there is no audio component available. That said, the language instruction is solid. A glossary in the back serves as a handy reference. This book would be hard to use without some level of fluency in the student or instructor, but I like the charm of the old type and no-nonsense explanations. 610 pp, pb. ~ Sara
