Shiver me timbers! This coloring book features an adaptation of the original rip-roaring adventures of Jim Hawkins, a young cabin boy aboard the Hispaniola, and the ship's voyage to the Caribbean isles in search of pirate treasure. Accompanying this lively text are 34 finely detailed black-and-white line drawings depicting Jim, Long John Silvers, old Ben Gunn, and other characters in a variety of ocean and island settings. ~ Rachel

A study of Hebrew history from 2000 to 430 B.C., beginning with Abram being called out of Ur. Over 80 activities and projects accompany the informational text from Growing Up in Ur and building ziggurats to Returning to Jerusalem and calculating tithes. Children construct salt-dough maps, make musical instruments, locust biscuits, and outfits to wear, mix up and bake a batch of unleavened bread, make an olive-oil lamp, and much, much more as they follow Biblical history From Abraham to Nehemiah. Projects and activities are well-coordinated with the text, which is amazingly good. The author has done an excellent job of combining Bible history with culture and customs. All you may want to add is actual Scripture reading for a great early history study.

Bold black lines and one-sided pages are options I look for when choosing coloring books. I like to use markers rather than pencils, and the bold lines are easier to work with. Some designs in this book are big and bold while others have a lot of detail. There are over 60 to choose from! They would be beautiful completed with layers of colored pencils, watercolor pencils or (my favorite, Prismacolor) markers. Add this book to a unit study on architecture or historical buildings. There are windows with both modern and ancient themes. Some have a very Tiffany Studio look, but there are a wide variety of styles to experiment with in various palettes: a soft, dark, shades of blue, high/low contrast, etc.

Growing up, if I was given historical fiction presented in clear language for my age level, I was hooked in a matter of minutes. KidVentures presents four Bible stories in this same manner. Trouble Times Ten features an Israelite boy named Ben who is afraid of water. When Moses tells his family that they need to cross the Red Sea to freedom, will he be able to trust God or will he be left behind? Ruled Out tells the story of Ethan who lives with the people who made it out of Egypt. Moses has been up on Mount Sinai for a while, and the people are starting to change, which scares Ethan. Galen and Goliath tells the story of Galen, a young Philistine who is told to kill a young boy to prove his bravery and loyalty. Trouble comes when Galen must decide if he wants to honor the giant Goliath or the God of the Israelites. The Prophet's Kid tells the story of Ezra, who just wants to have fun. He goes to a meeting he isn't allowed to attend, which lands him in a heap of trouble that even causes someone's life to be at risk!

All these stories are bound into a 313-page softcover book that includes a parent/teacher guide filled with discussion questions, background information, and learning activities. Great for Bible studies or recreational reading. – Laura

This unique study/devotional book does a fine job of covering much of the Bible; it is packed full of 108 family-oriented Bible lessons from Genesis to Revelation. The author makes so much of the Bible accessible to even your young ones. The Old Testament section includes much of Genesis and Exodus and most familiar stories, as well as lessons on the kings and prophets. Most of the New Testament lessons are taken from the Gospels and Acts, but each other book
is given one chapter. Begin each lesson with the provided questions to arouse interest and introduce the lesson theme. The retelling of a Biblical story follows.
Choose to read the included Biblical story or the corresponding passage in your own Bible. The next section, entitled Things to Think About, provides open-ended questions for discussion. The devotional ends with Things to Pray About, which offers unscripted prayer suggestions. Each lesson concludes with Things to Do, an activity suggestion section. Here you will find general directions for varied activity options (crafts, serving, worship, etc.). In some cases, activities are geared to particular age groups and are identified as such. Many of the craft-type activities appeared to be more elementary-aged focused: make a people collage, make an advent chain, etc. However, since these activities are
explained in general terms, you can easily tailor the activity to your own child's level. Many of these activities require supplies you would normally have around a home-school house. There are some activities that require supplies, such as
"chalk talk" and flannel board suggestions, but these are optional. There are also unique suggestions that would be appropriate for a variety of ages such as singing and dancing to praise songs or thinking of a friend and planning a time to tell him about Jesus. This book would work as a more in-depth family devotional or as a Bible curriculum in the elementary years (no tests included). 595 pp, sc. ~ Ruth

Children love to learn by reading or listening to stories. This is a fictional account of Peter Rabbit and the birds in Old Orchard. While it is an enjoyable tale, accurate accounts of the different birds (Jenny Wren, the Blackbird family, Carol the Meadowlark, and Spooky the Screech Owl, to name a few) are given pertaining to coloring, habitats, and habits. Black and white illustrations of many of the different birds are included throughout the story. Children will develop not only knowledge and a love of birds, but also a love for nature, including the importance of conservation and preservation of our precious resources. ~ Megan

As parents, we have the tremendous opportunity to share God’s truth and the Gospel with our children! The subtitle for this devotional is Ten-Minute Devotions to Draw Your Family to God. These 78 weeks (a year and a half’s worth!) of in-depth, yet straight forward devotionals require a minimum each day. Organized by week, you’ll find units of 5 daily devotions: days 1-4 chronologically study the Bible. The books focus on key biblical elements that connect the whole message of the Gospel in a concise and manageable way. Day 5 diverges from this pattern to study related writings from the Psalms or prophets. Each weekly unit opens with an object lesson or themed questions. The simple items used for this lesson are listed at the beginning. Day one begins with Picture It, to help introduce the family to the week’s theme. Each day, read the passage from your own Bible, and then Think about It (a brief read-aloud passage to help understand the passage), Talk about It (three group questions with brief answers) and Pray About It (unscripted suggestions for prayer). As you progress through the week, you will be asked to remember previous days’ readings and also to apply them to your lives.

Old Story New covers the New Testament. About half of the devotions discuss the life and ministry of Jesus. The second half covers the church and living like Christ (Acts and epistles). Includes brief instructions for how to use the devotionals with preschool, grade school and older students.

I so appreciate the succinct treasure this is: theologically rich, yet comprehensible; simple, yet doctrinally sound. Another unique feature is that occasionally children are cued to ask the parents questions. The approach here is that we are all on a spiritual journey to becoming more like Christ (rather than “the parents know it all”). Use these excellent devotions to start your homeschool day or study as a family in the evening. By the same author as Gospel Story Bible (#062680). 7.5” x 10.5”, 418 pp, sc. ~ Ruth

Imagine you're in heaven and the prophet Zechariah walks up to you and asks, "So what did you think of my book?" You sheepishly look down, shuffle your feet, and mutter, "Uh, I never read it." So begins the introduction to this book. Whether you desire to read the OT and struggle to trudge through Numbers or you feel the children's Sunday school stories taught you all that you know of Old Testament theology, this book will guide you into a deeper understanding of the sacred writings that Jesus studied. This significant resource is divided into two reading options - a full version reading guide, which organizes the OT into 40 weeks of readings and reflection questions, or the fast track version, a 32-week study with readings and reflection questions covering the main themes and key points of the OT. Highly recommended for any high schooler or adult who desires a comprehensive understanding of the Old Testament. 191 pgs, pb ~Deanne
