From the makers of Highlights magazine for children, these books have page after page of puzzles (mostly mazes) for little learners. Colorful images with lots of animals in both books. Make them last by tearing out a page and putting them in a plastic sleeve to use with dry-erase markers and let several kids do each puzzle over and over until they figure them all out. Off We Go is for beginners while Lost and Found is for expert puzzlers. Non-reproducible, 72pp each, pb ~ Sara

Join Richard Scarry's beloved cast of animal characters as they ride buses, drive trucks, fly airplanes and sail boats. This transportation-themed picture book teaches kids about the many ways we get from place to place. The book is divided into several "chapters" - Cars, Buses, and Trucks; Airplanes, Helicopters, and Rockets; Trains and Locomotives; and Ships and Boats. Within each chapter are illustrations that give examples of the specific modes of transportation, plus captions explaining their functions. For example the "Cars, Buses, and Trucks" chapter has pictures of a convertible car, taxi, mail truck, police car, and double-decker sightseeing bus. And that's just the first page! In fact, the pages have so many great illustrations that kids could use this as a beginning reference guide to transportation. 46 pgs, hc. ~ Lisa

One of our favorite things to do when we were young was play our Oregon Trail computer game. Though we hardly ever made it alive to the end, we enjoyed planning for the trip by buying supplies, making trail decisions when our wagon broke, hunting for food, fording rivers, and other aspects of traveling the trail. Like most kids, we were fascinated by the idea of leaving behind your home and traveling all the way across the country amid many dangers, in search of a better life. This book brings the adventure of going west to you through stories, "pretend-it-was-you" decision making pages and activities using common materials. The reading is split between interesting historical accounts of life back then and a fictional story of one family's decisions to go west. "Try It" activities litter the book, encouraging you to do things like they did on the trail, including churning butter, drying apple slices, and playing games. Ideas and directions for other activities, such as constructing your own paddleboat, creating a popsicle-stick Ft. Laramie, holding your very own frolic (complete with treats!) and other western aspects appear every few pages to add even more fun to your journey. Though the frontier is gone, and the journey would only take hours today, it's still fun to imagine yourself experiencing life on the trail. ~ Stephanie

Easily one of the most inviting and exciting science experiment resources I have seen in awhile, this volume by Vicki Cobb and Kathy Darling is packed with "showstopper" experiments and science "bets." First of all, you get your money's worth. The price is great for over 300 full-color, glossy pages and I haven't even gotten to the content! The eight chapters feature experiments on the human body, experiments to do outdoors, experiments to try in public places, water and fluid-based experiments, experiments on energy, experiments on matter, experiments with forces, and math-related experiments. Many activities are quick and easy to do, requiring few supplies and typically only common household objects. Here's a quick sampling, just to give you an idea of the types of activities and the range: "betting" students can't crumple up a sheet of newspaper with one hand, making coins feel heavier by chilling them, looking for the secret markings on license plates, capturing hidden fingerprints with Krazy Glue, using thermonuclear energy to bust a balloon, hypnotize frogs with a belly rub, holding a slime mold "race," speeding up a merry-go-round by shifting your weight, trying to blow out a candle through a funnel, making an egg climb a waterfall, writing secret messages with laundry detergent, attracting a dollar bill with a magnet, using a hammer to slice an apple in midair, and much, much more. The presentation is exciting and fast-paced, yet simple. The directions are straightforward and the explanations are clear and to the point. With the "bet you can" and "bet you can't" call-outs in plenty of activities, this may be one that kids will pull off the shelf on their own. 322 pgs, pb. – Jess

How many times have you, as a mother, become frustrated and stressed by what you think you should accomplish on any given day? Society tells moms that they should be ‘super moms’ and be able to do it all. This book debunks that myth and others.

There are many myths about motherhood, and this book focuses on ten of them: Mothering is natural, easy, and instinctive; The way I mother is the right and only way; I am just a mom; Motherhood is all-consuming and all-fulfilling; A good mother can do it all, all at once; Motherhood is a rat race; Motherhood is the luck of the draw; Everything depends on me; I have to do it all right, or my child will turn out wrong; My child’s bad choice means I’m a bad mom. This 217-page, softcover book is written by two moms, Karen Ehman and Ruth Schwenk, who realized the myths of motherhood were just that, and wanted to encourage and help other mothers. They use their experience and the Bible to equip mothers to embrace relationships instead of stressing over the other ‘stuff’ of life.

You don’t have to be a ‘super mom’ to be a ‘great mom.’ Learn the truth from the Bible about being a mother, and stop believing the lies and myths. Your children will be grown all too soon, so enjoy guiding and nurturing them now on the journey you are taking together. ~ Donna

Are you generally curious about numbers and math? If you've ever spent time wondering "Where do numbers come from? Why do we count in groups of ten? This 96-page book is an informational treasure trove, packed with fascinating mathematical history, facts, and trivia. Every full-color page is visually stimulating, while problems and puzzles are sporadically presented throughout to keep the reader actively engaged. This book covers a wide range of topics including the history of counting, ancient number systems, magic squares, the Fibonacci sequence, the golden ratio, prime numbers, Pascal's triangle, shapes, mazes, probability, fractals, and more. We predict it, watch it, run from it, complain about it, and pray about it – but how much do we actually know about it? These activities will give you a real hands-on look at weather. The 31 activities are quite varied in subject matter – from assembling and using an anemometer to making it rain; learning about thunderstorms to measuring relative humidity. Most of the items needed to complete the activities are included, but you will need to supply a couple of items – such as batteries. The guide book is very colorful with each activity well-illustrated for clarity. Weather has such a huge effect on our lives that a good understanding of what causes different weather patterns can be quite beneficial. – Zach

We can learn the basics from the colorful science readers that are available, but why not engage those senses while reading and learning about them? Make some perfume (or maybe a stink bomb!), check for sourness, confuse your sense of touch, try your hand at Braille, make a hearing aid, find your dominant eye, make a telescope – the activities are many (those named are just a sampling) and explore through the 5 senses in a very engaging manner. The 62-page guide book is glossy and colorful with plenty of pictures and illustrations to make completing the activities easier. Most of the things you need are included in the kit, with just a few things you will need to collect yourself. - Zach 1CHOKING HAZARD (1). Not <3yrs.

While many number charts show up to 100, this one goes to 120. This is not a times table; the numbers go across 1-10 in the first row, then 11-20, 21-30, 31-40, etc. A teacher/parent can use this to show number sequencing, skip counting, or counting by 10s. On the back is a blank grid of 10" x 12" squares that you can write on with a dry-erase marker (you can write on both sides actually). White with bold black numbers and a colorful red striped border. 11x13" cardstock. ~ Sara

With so many dry-eraseables in our catalog, we wanted to offer you a high-quality, high performance dry eraser. The durable construction of this eraser and its outstanding performance in ink removal won our hearts! It absorbs dust that other dry erasers miss and leaves no mess on hands or board ledges. When soiled, just wash out with soap and water, rinse well, and dry. If you use dry markers/boards like we do, buy two so you can wash/dry one while using the other! (Hint: use inexpensive bathroom white paneling to make write & wipe boards - works great!)

Carol Barnier, mother of an ADHD child, has written this book for parents of highly distractible, fidgety, and ADHD children to provide them with real methods they can use for effective teaching. In her words, she is writing this book because while she found gobs "...of information about how to recognize ADHD children, manage them, medicate them, discipline them, and accept them, no one told her how to teach math tomorrow." So she set about finding successful ways to teach distractible children and has compiled her ideas into this book so other parents can work past the frustration and find methods that work. She begins by exploring the different characteristics of distractible children, and then begins to suggest ideas to implement. One way to keep them listening is to give them something to do with their hands. This doesn't mean they're not listening, they just simply have to be doing something. She suggests having them play with silly putty, work with Legos, draw a picture, or walk around in circles. You can also play games that incorporate their need to move, such as educational versions of Mother-May-I?, Hop-On-It, or Toss-It. To play Toss-It, you decide what you want to learn (the alphabet, books of the Bible, skip counting, etc). This sounded like a good idea to me for any child, so I tried it out with Janine (then 8, and with some memorization difficulties) and decided to try and teach her the books of the Bible. Within two days (and only 2 rounds of Toss-It) we both knew the first seventeen books, and she began asking me whenever I saw her if we had time to play again and learn some more. The following chapters provide ideas and instructions for a variety of manipulatives and games for teaching phonics, math, writing and history. Other advice for outings and car trips and further discussions about finding the gifts in your child are included in the last chapters. Two appendices contain reproducible resources for games to use in school and an additional resource list. A helpful guide for anyone looking for fresh ideas. - Melissa

If you enjoy David Macaulay's detailed, illustrated tours of architecture in Castle, Cathedral, or Pyramid or how he visually explains the intricacies of machines in The Way Things Work, you won't want to miss this book in which he explores the just-as-impressive world inside the human body. Even if you think you have no interest in the subject, you can't help but be drawn in by the detailed and imaginative illustrations, some of which resemble detailed anatomical drawings, and others with whimsical "takes" on the various systems such as comparing the blood vessels to a theme park ride where oxygen molecules jump on and off of red blood cells. The 7 chapters explore cells and tissues, breathing and the circulatory system, the digestive system, the nervous system, the immune system and the reproductive system (quite tastefully done, I might add). Each page is dominated by Macaulay's lively colored pencil illustrations displaying body structures from a variety of imaginative viewpoints. After you pore over the picture, a paragraph or two on explains the inner workings of the subject. I love the illustrations of enlarged body structures with a small walkway or railing in the foreground where people are standing and staring. These define the book as a whole rather well; it's not an anatomy atlas or encyclopedia. It's a very visual tour through the systems of the human body that shows readers "how it works" and what those amazing systems at work inside of us would look like if we could really shrink ourselves and take a field trip. 336 pgs, hc. - Jess

Some of the most important activities little ones can do are those that develop motor skills – both fine and gross motor – and this book provides great suggestions for activities to build those skills at home. The first section of the book explains how young children learn and develop. The second part of the book includes the 40 active-learning programs. Each two-page program consists of an overview on the area of learning, list of materials and set-up (if applicable), the actual activities (3 or more per program), tips for adjusting the activities, variations, related resources – games and books that will provide more help in certain developmental areas, and further information such as definitions, etc. For example, the first program is "Amazing Animal Tricks." Children will improve strength, balance, coordination, and body awareness, along with improving visual skills, understanding position and direction words, and following directions. This program incorporates the use of stuffed animals from around your home and a small blanket or large towel. Choose from five outlined activities – Silly Moving, Moving with Direction, Jumping Over, Animal Toss, and Animals Books. Suggestions are included for improving math skills and helping your child succeed. 'Further Information' includes explanations for the movements and skills needed to perform the activities. The third section of the book offers lists of the early learning standards that the activities meet. For parents who want a good resource for activities with their little ones, this book packs a lot into the pages. Activities for the purpose of development will stimulate and entertain for hours. Turn off the television, put the computer and iPad in sleep mode, and get up and move with your children. ~ Donna
