Although Columbus is famous for it, he was not the first person to discover America. The Americas have been "discovered" again and again throughout history. This story takes you through the history of the Americas from pre-history through the 16th century when Europeans were here to stay. ~ Stephanie

Reading through this Usborne book made me want to take a few vacation days and go explore someplace exotic. It highlights some of the most popular or influential explorers from ancient to current times. It shares their exciting stories in a concise but captivating way, showing the supplies they needed, hardships endured, reasons for their travels, how their trips made history, and more. The text itself is fascinating, but the illustrations really make the book stand out. There are cartoon drawings and profiles of the explorers with speech bubbles displaying things they said or wrote, photographs or reproductions of famous vessels, tools, etc. used in exploration, colorful maps, and scenes of impressive things explorers discovered. Small text boxes share especially interesting information, captions are descriptive and informational, and the text is engaging. Starting with the ancient Egyptian adventurer Harkhuf, who traveled to a place called Yam to bring back precious treasures to the king of Egypt, the book continues through explorers such as the ancient Greek Pytheas, Vikings like Leif Ericsson, the Italian traveler Marco Polo, the Muslim explorer Ibn Battuta who covered 75,000 miles across Africa, the 15th Century Chinese adventurer Zheng He who explored the lands around China for the emperor and spread the word that China was in charge, Portuguese sailors who explored the African west coast looking for a way to Asia, Christopher Columbus and other adventurers who explored/invaded the New World, and Ferdinand Magellan's trip around the world. The scientific aspects of later explorations are also covered, like Captain Cook's mapping of the coast of Canada, and then attempting a scientific expedition to the Pacific Ocean; nature-lover and German-born Alexander von Humboldt who studied the plants and wildlife of South American jungles; Lewis and Clark's remarkable adventure across North America; Dr. Livingstone's missionary efforts in Africa; British officer Charles Stuart who explored the Australian outback; and even more current Antarctic adventures and races. Ocean and space exploration are touched on lightly. Obviously, a wide range of explorers and explorations are covered, so this is a perfect introductory book for kids and a good way to get them to see the excitement and adventure of exploring. Enhance your studies of North American exploration. This coloring book follows the explorers to the New World starting with the Vikings and chronologically "discovering" the land (roughly the period between 1000 A.D. and 1827) up to Jedediah Smith's travel to California. Informative text accompanies the illustrations, describing the depicted explorers and historical significance of their explorations. This would be wonderful to color as you study the various time periods and events illustrated - even if it takes you several years to complete!

Wisely, Franklin D. Roosevelt once stated, "No government is perfect. One of the chief virtues of a democracy, however, is that its defects are always visible and under democratic processes can be pointed out and corrected." Yet, each president had a level of faith-in God, in mankind, and in our great nation. Quoting American presidents from George Washington through Barrack Obama, the authors explore the role faith has played in the American presidency throughout our flawed history. Quotations and related Scriptures are shared along with Making It Real self-examination questions. Additional questions and hot topic questions found in the back of the book make this a creative way to study history and current events as a family or youth group. Various scripture versions are used. 116 pgs, sc. ~ Deanne

Episode five, "Home Grown Saints", looks at ten influential Christians who changed the course of religious and cultural life in America. This storybook gives a good overview of the various explorations that shaped the Americas from 1500 to 1620. Full-color pages and maps illustrate, while details about the various notable travelers, soldiers, treasure hunters, and explorers are shared. The tone of the book is a bit negative, as the explorers are sometimes presented as money and power hungry conquerors who demolished native people and lands, but readers will get introduced to some of the more notable explorers and the areas they made an impact in. The book discusses why different people traveled and explored and who financed the trips, major events and conflicts that occurred with native people, settlements that were established, development and expansion of maps, what life was like for explorers and settlers, and other important events. Kids will get a good look at the era that brought new people into Americas and dramatically expanded the known world. Columbus, Hernan Cortes, Francisco Pizarro, John Cabot, Giovanni da Verrazano, Jacques Cartier, John Hawkins, Francis Drake, John Smith, and Samuel de Champlain are a few of the explorers mentioned. No one person is covered in great detail; instead, the book is more of a flowing narrative that shows how events progressed until the New World was settled. Carla Mooney teaches children about the explorers and expeditions of North America with the right balance of written material and twenty-two exciting and practical activities. All activities are related to the topic being studied. For example, when reading about the search for the Northwest Passage, children are given step-by-step instructions to play a sixteenth-century sailor's dice game. When reading about Magellan, children make sand hourglasses, sea biscuits, and sailor's lanyards. Topics discussed are the search for a route to the Indies from Europe over the seas, Christopher Columbus, John Cabot, Ferdinand Magellan, the Spanish Conquistadors, and adventures of discovery inland. Included throughout are biographies, dates, new vocabulary words, and illustrations. The book would work well in a classroom setting or as an independent activity book for any child. 120 pgs, pb. – John
