Learning how to outline can be a confusing challenge for any student, but this workbook provides 24 activities that build upon each other to break down the different steps involved. The book truly takes students step by step through the outlining process, starting small and then growing complex, giving them plenty of practice with each step. Students first learn about the aspects of an outline, such as the title, main topics, sub-topics, and details, and then they put each component to work. Students begin the workbook by learning about titles and making up some title names for different situations. Then they learn about adding topics, sub-topics, and other details. Worksheets include exercises like filling in outlines using word banks and other prompts, making up subtopics and details for an outline, choosing the main topic from a sentence, and much more. By the end of the workbook, students are creating their own outlines and writing a report from an outline. Reproducible, answers provided. ~ Rachel S.

Note taking is a valuable skill that will help students retain information, organize research, and improve their test-taking abilities. This book provides exercises that will help children start developing this skill at an early age. Sections of the book guide children through an array of note-taking strategies to use when reading from textbooks or novels, researching and using online sources, and taking notes in class or from another spoken source. Each worksheet holds a short, interesting passage followed by a note-taking activity covering a specific tactic such as recognizing the main idea and details, chronological order, summarizing, tables, Venn diagrams and other graphic organizers, scanning, character, note cards, bibliography, and other helpful methods. Suggestions are also given for teachers which will allow students the opportunity to practice taking notes in class, such as reading an article aloud to students or watching an educational video. If students don't recognize the benefits of this skill now, they definitely will when they are in college! ~ Steph

Princeton Review has been doing test prep since 1981. Their proven test-taking strategies and comprehensive content prepare your student for this very important college entry exam. They emphasize that this one test is not a reflection of the student’s intelligence, but only a reflection of how well the student took this one test. The test itself runs 3hrs 45 minutes and covers math, critical reading grammar and an essay. This book is meant to help you perform better on this test.

The new redesigned exam started in March, 2016. The specific changes are noted in this book on p.8. So what is on the other 890 pages here? LOADS of practice questions! Ten full-length practice tests, to be exact. Even better than that, you have answers with explanations. Practice questions teach what to look for and familiarize you with exam language as well as content. Don’t wait until a week before the actual test to start practicing! Plan for about 2-3 months. Most students will do better if they nibble away at the practice questions and have time to internalize the material rather than just cramming, memorizing and forgetting it immediately afterwards. The other benefit of test prep is that your student is likely to be less nervous exam day. Test anxiety is real and affects a lot of very bright people. By getting familiar with the lay of the land so to speak, you are more likely to get an accurate representation of your test knowledge. This is a big book, chip away at it. 900 pp, sc. ~ Sara

I always suggest students use notecards as a study tool, and these are prepared for you. Maybe you are reviewing for a big test like the SAT/ACT. Maybe you have a research paper to write and want to brush up on grammar. Maybe you don't need a workbook, but still want to keep your essay writing in tip-top shape. Maybe you are a non-native English speaker wanting to improve your grammar/writing/speaking by polishing up on the rules. 600 study cards review key concepts, conjugations and rules by asking you definition, true/false, and fill-in-the-blank questions. Study alone or with a friend. You will cover: adjectives, adverbs, clauses, grammar mistakes, modifiers, nouns, phrases, pronouns, punctuation, sentences, sentence types & verbs. Each card is 3" x 2" and comes in a sturdy blue storage box w/lid. Here is a sample card: "Explain the difference in parts of speech between these and those in the following sentence: These bears are more dangerous than those" (on front). The category for the question ("adjectives") is listed on the bottom front. And on the back: "These modifies bears in the sentence. Therefore, it is a demonstrative adjective. Those, which takes the place of a pronoun, is a demonstrative pronoun." You could read a card as a warm-up activity before you start your language arts for the day. Make up a game with them! Send a box off with your college student! ~ Sara

Robert Pinsky translated this edition of Dante's Inferno, and it's an accurate verse translation that captures the poetry and visionary imagery of Dante's original writing. It takes the reader on a journey through nine levels of hell with all the power and wonder that Dante intended. In this edition, the original Italian from Dante is provided on the left-hand page and then Pinsky's English translation is given in stanzas on the right-hand page. With notes by Nicole Pinsky and a forward by John Freccero, this bilingual edition makes the classic story even more enjoyable. 356 pgs, pb.

This is the Robert Fagles translation of the complete epic story of Troy that was written by Homer. It's a great translation that shares all the adventure and poetry of the text in modern verse. This is a classic story that most people don't take the time to examine, but reading the complete account is very rewarding. Characters like Helen, Paris, Hector, Achilles, and Olympian gods come to life. This edition boasts many great features, including a 64-page introduction that analyzes the story and highlights the main points, a guide for pronouncing names, maps of regions involved in the story, and notes on the translation. Every tenth line of the book is numbered for easy reference or group reading and discussion. Though still not a light read, this edition of the amazing tale is the most readable and absorbing complete version that I have seen. 684 pgs, pb. ~ Rachel

If you are looking to develop your expository writing skills, check out thisworkbook. Expository writing exposes, puts forth, explains, reveals, orexhibits in detail about something. This style of writing is perfect to usewhen you want to inform, clarify, or persuade. Honestly, this style of writingis what your child needs to learn for college! It falls perfectly in line withwhat my college professors wanted. Luckily, I had learned this style of writingduring my high school years, so I was well prepared. You'll want to prepareyour child in the same way.

This book falls naturally into seven sections. You would be hard-pressed totry and do all the sections in one year, as there is so much to cover and thewriting and research process takes time. (Remember, college professors oftengive students a whole semester to work on one very detailed and in-depthpaper.) Section one works on single paragraph formats. Then in section twoyou'll work on the elements of the five paragraph essay and different formatsyou can use. Book reports put the five paragraph formats to use in sectionthree. Section four works on business writing, such as: business letters, letters of complaint, cover letters, political letters, and resume writing. Insection five, you'll work on the principle of condensation as you learn how towrite in various lengths as you reduce, abridge, abbreviate, shorten, cut, compress, compact, or distill your work! Now you are ready to compose a majorpaper and all its components (title page, endnotes, appendix, bibliography, etc), as outlined in section six. Section seven contains all the check sheetsand forms, tests, answer keys, and sample week-by-week schedules to help youorganize deadlines for the longer, more detailed papers.

This workbook is very straightforward in its presentation of this writingstyle, but it is very clear, concise, and helpful. If my recommendation isn'tenough, then maybe you'd be interested to know that this is also one of CathyDuffy's 100 Top Picks. 160 pgs, pb. - elise

Designed to help students who are continuing on to college hone their research skills, this book by two professional librarians is an easy-to-use guide to navigating the sometimes intimidating world of information. Four sections cover the research process from beginning to end, from preparing yourself for research, to locating information, evaluating and processing information, and finally on how to use your research. A variety of information sources are covered, from search engines to libraries, library websites, OPAC, databases, archives, and interviews. Once you've discovered how to find your way around the myriad of information sources available, Section 3 will help you make good use of what you've found. Students will learn the "ABC" method to evaluate sources of information in light of the information's "author and authority", "body" (objectivity, accuracy, completeness, relevancy and format), and "currency". Skimming, scanning, note-taking, and citing skills are also covered here. Throughout the guide diagrams, forms, bullets, quirky illustrations and short paragraphs make the information easily accessible and very digestible. If your students are feeling a little nervous about tackling those college research papers, this is an up-to-date, relevant guide that may be an invaluable help without being a huge time investment. Traditional studies of philosophy often bog me down. I struggle juggling the terms and different schools of thought. But this book overviews 3 centuries of philosophy’s big ideas in a playful, easy-to-grasp format. The presentation is chronological, grouped by schools of thought, and outlines key ideas of major philosophers. The almost tabloid-like format shares the meaty ideas in bite-sized pieces interwoven with side notes and 2-toned drawings. Although not written from a Christian or even religious perspective, the author spends one chapter discussing the influence major religions have had on philosophy. As the author states in his preface, “philosophy without an engagement with Judeo-Christian thought only takes thought—and life more generally—so far.” A fine introduction to philosophy by Dover publishing. Author’s revision of his 1999 edition. 6” x 9”, 225 pp, sc. ~ Ruth
