Subtitled "A Saga of 14th Century America", this adventure story provides an early look at America from a Scandinavian perspective. The year is 1360 AD and King Magnus Eirikson rules over Sweden and Norway—a united, Christian Scandinavia. It is rumored that the colonies in Greenland have reverted to their old pagan rituals, and the inhabitants of the Western Settlement have disappeared. King Magnus sends Paul Knutson and forty men across the sea to Greenland to verify the truth of these stories. After the men confirm the disappearance of the settlement, they follow a trail of clues south across the seas toward "Vinland"—in search of answers for the King. The Norse expedition reaches an unknown continent filled with surprising animals and inhabitants. Will they solve the mystery and return safety to their homeland? By Elizabeth Coatsworth. 245 pgs, pb. ~ Lisa

Fans of Ingri and Edgar Parin D’Aulaire will be delighted with this newly reprinted edition of adapted Norwegian folk tales. Twenty-one charming stories capture the heart and soul of the Norwegian landscape replete with the magical world of cinderlads, princesses, and trolls. Based upon the highly acclaimed work of Peter Christen Asbjørnsen and Jørgen Moe from the mid-1800s, the D’Aulaires have kept alive the richness of humor, fullness of life, and depth of understanding the original tales were famous for and added their exceptional etchings and drawings to provide families a treasured read-aloud to be shared for years to come. It should be noted there are fewer illustrations in this book compared to the other offerings by the D’Aulaires. Occasional references to God, for example: “so he went to his brother to ask him for something to keep Christmas with, in God’s name,” as well as references to the Devil and Hell. hc. 188 pgs. ~ Deanne

Turn extra classroom minutes into valuable learning time or use this as a way to easily work some art history into your homeschooling day without taking the time for a full program. 180 quick activities cover key artists (Giotto, El Greco, Dali, etc.), artistic styles (Rococo, surrealism, contemporary, etc.), and time periods (pre-historic, Roman, contemporary, etc.). Because the book is small (7.75" x 5.5"), you have to find another resource for viewing the paintings, but in the back, a list of websites is included to view the paintings/sculptures that go with the activities. Make that search part of the student's assignments! You will touch on everything from cave paintings to street graffiti as your students are asked compare the Roman Colosseum with modern sports arenas; describe/draw patterns & shapes found in an animal head carving in Norway; create an advertisement after looking at Toulouse Lautrec's use of text in his posters; and describe some of the themes in more modern photographs. Though recommended for middle grades, this can cross over into all ages with some creative discussions. Reproducible (though not perforated) or you can print copies off of the companion CD-ROM (included). Answer key in the back, 223 pp, sc. ~ Sara

Expand your train line all the way from Denmark to the northern frontier of Europe, building throughout Norway, Sweden, Finland, and a small portion of Russia and Estonia. The cold isn't the only danger in Scandinavia, though—narrow, remote routes occupy much of Western Norway and Northern Finland, with few connections directly across the map. Imitating the rough, mountainous geography are numerous tunnel and ferry routes stretching across much of the map. Perhaps some of those high-value tickets stretching across the mainland can help Sweden the deal… 2-3 players.
