Every level’s Student Edition is a workbook and each lesson is two pages. Graphics are black and white with an accent color and offer a worked example when a new concept is presented. Problemsolving lessons allow an opportunity for students to apply the skills they have learned, and Chapter Challenge pages provide practice of new skills. “It’s Algebra†pages are lessons that will help in preparation for algebra. Chapter tests are found at the end of every chapter; and to help keep skills sharp, cumulative assessments are included at the end of every chapter in grades 16. Each twopage lesson covers one main objective or concept and offers a visual model and practice. Both workbook pages are used with direct instruction by the parent/teacher as they explain the model or process and identify symbols to teach the lesson. As the levels progress (16), the student editions include more instruction, but there will always be the direct instruction component for use with the first page of each lesson, found in the teacher edition. The second page for levels 16 are for practice of the concept.

Every block of ten lessons begins with a challenging set of problems that prepares students for standardized math testing and features personal interviews showing how individuals make use of math in everyday life. Horizons PreAlgebra includes several areas of new content, including: Absolute Value
Volume and Surface Area of Solids
 Transformations and Nets
 Compound Interest

Similar in format to other Horizons K6 courses, the consumable, fullcolor Horizons PreAlgebra Student Book includes 160 daily lessons. Each lesson begins with a teaching box that details the new concept. A class work section has been added to this area of the lesson for guided practice of the new concept. Typical of other Horizons math courses, the activities section of each lesson includes a set of practice problems for the new concept and review problems for previously covered concepts.
Another new feature of the Student Book is a set of college test prep questions that follows each block of 10 lessons. These problems are designed to help students prepare for standardized math testing. This book also includes a new collection of interviews with everyday people who use math in their daily vocations. Setting the stage for each group of lessons, these interviews bring the lessons to life by adding a human interest touch to word problems. A nontechnical book that explains math from counting to calculus. Topics build on one another, providing the reader with a complete overview of mathematics. This book is divided into three sections elementary (numbers, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, percentages, negative numbers, exponents, prealgebra), intermediate (solving one algebraic equation, solving a system of equations, word problems, functions, graphing, geometry, measurement of geometric figures, trigonometry), and advanced (logarithms, complex numbers, finding geometry, using algebra, introducing calculus, the derivative, the integral). This is not a text, but a discussion that includes numerous worked examples. For parents, students, or anyone who wants to understand math. Also useful as a comprehensive math reference.
It does no good to have a text without practice of the concepts. Students read the content found in the main text "Understanding Mathematics," then complete the corresponding section in the solutions (companion) guide. The first half of the guide offers hints, examples, explanations, exercises, and problems for practice. Each chapter's content builds on the previous chapter, and initial problems incorporate the new concept presented in the main text and more challenging problems with multiple concepts by the end of the chapter. The second half of the book gives the solutions for all of the problems in the book. A 20question chapter summary concludes each chapter. The text along with the solutions guide provide extra practice in specific skill areas, allow students to work ahead of their curriculum for an added challenge, or can be used for a comprehensive review before taking a standardized test. sc. ~ Ahn/Donna

With the same quality presentation, you have come to expect from Cassidy Callahan, fromAskDr.Callahan.com, DVDs have minor edits to align them with the new printing of Jacob's Elementary Algebra from Master Books. Each set of DVDs provides approximately 12 hours of lesson lectures that parallel the respective texts. Concepts are illustrated and problems (like those in the text) are worked on a white or black board behind the lecturer. There is an occasional use of illustrative videos which provides a break from the teaching environment. Solutions for assignment problems are not worked on the DVDs. Content is compatible with any 3rd edition Jacob's Algebra.

More About Mathseeds
Mathseeds is an interactive online math program for the younger learners in your family. There are 200 lessons geared toward ages 39, and new content is added often. Every lesson introduces and models a concept and is then followed by activities, an ebook reinforcing the concept, and then a reward of a hatching epet. Children work through virtual maps of different ecosystems, and the epets are animals that might be found in that area. A multiplechoice quiz is given after every 5^{th} lesson, which comes with its own rewards. There are 50 lessons per grade level K3, but these could be used whenever your student is ready. The first 20 lessons at the K level are for students with no math skills, so they could be used younger. Lessons 21 – 50 begin to develop foundational math skills. The rest of the lessons build upon previously learned skills in the program, so you’ll want to do them in order. Printable activities provide written practice for the lessons taught online.
The online subscription is a 12month access code for use with one student. With access, you will receive lessons, printables (same as the workbook pages), tracking of student progress, and a downloadable app for your tablet. Children will love the interactivity of the online lessons and the surprises that hatch along the learning path. Print workbooks for Mathseeds are available on our site as a separate purchase if it's easier than printing the activities online.

Who couldn't use a few more of those "sticky" brain tricks to remember facts and rules? This neat little compendium, while seemingly written for the upper elementarygrade, holds a few gems everyone could appreciate. Each chapter features poems, rhymes, acronyms, pictures and more to help the reader remember English and grammar rules, the proper spelling of troublesome words, history and geography facts, calendar and time quirks, science lists and facts, important math concepts, general knowledge and music memory aids. Because a lot of mnemonics, acronyms and acrostics are used, often specific letters are printed in bold font to help them stand out. For example, to remember the difference between 'complement' and 'compliment,' remember that if you're talking about praise, "I like compliments." If you remember that the letters at the beginning of each of the Great Lakes spell "HOMES," you'll appreciate this way to remember all of the Central American countries: "My Big Gray Elephant Has No Critical Problems." Not only is this a great way to remember Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama, but this also helps you remember the order of the countries between the U.S. and South America (and this group also looks a bit like an elephant's head and trunk, as depicted with the memory trick). While there are some familiar rhymes and facts in here, there are plenty of lesserknown or new memory aids as well; you may just borrow this from the kids for your own use! 124 pgs, pb. – Jess
