Having a background in the medical field, I found myself perusing this book with an eye focused on details - How accurate is the information? How easily would it be understood by the average reader especially in the sections detailing common disorders? How straightforward is it to navigate as a learning resource? All I can say is WOW! This book does indeed exceed all expectations. The Human Body beautifully illustrates the internal human body through the use of 3D computer images, computed tomography (CT scan) images, microscopic image photography, PET scan images and color illustrations.

It is organized into thirteen chapters which include the integrated body; skeletal system; muscular system; nervous system; endocrine system; cardiovascular system; respiratory system; skin, hair and nails; lymph and immunity; digestive system; urinary system; reproduction and birth; and growth and development. Each chapter is further structured into the anatomy, the physiology, and a discussion of common disorders for each body system. These are well organized and use the correct terminology explained accurately and clearly. The back of the book also contains a ten-page glossary of terms to further explain the terms or for quick reference. The authors have given a great depth of information in an easy to understand manner, and because of this I feel this book would be a valuable asset to anyone with an interest in learning more about our human body, how it functions and the disorders that affect mankind.

If the contents of this book are not enough to whet your interest, it also contains an interactive DVD-ROM (computer) to enhance learning. What makes this DVD-ROM interactive? First, each of the body systems is illustrated, and a simple scroll over with your computer mouse will give the name of the structure or organ examined. Also included are video clips of the body in action; for example, the heart beating is shown complete with the pumping action and the electrical impulses as it prepares to deliver blood flow. The only negative I noticed with the DVD-ROM is that it is all graphics and no voice to explain what you are viewing. However the text does explain the material and the appropriate pages will direct you to the DVD-ROM for enhanced learning. The DVD-ROM is compatible with Windows XP (service pack 2)/Vista/7; Mac OS X v.10.4. H/c, oversized (10.5x12), 288 richly illustrated pages. Please note: Dorling Kindersly is not a Christian publisher, and there are (naturally) images of male and female body systems, a video clip on conception, and a discussion of sexually transmitted infections. Overall, this is done tastefully with a focus on the structure and function of the human body. ~ Deanne

Coloring books help you to concentrate on a subject. This Dover book contains scientifically accurate renderings of the body organs and major systems for you to color while you study. It has a surprising amount of detail for an inexpensive book. Divided into 11 different sections, it covers all major body systems. Diagrams of systems are divided into numbered sections like color-by-number pictures. A chart lists the name of each body part and what color to use. A good, low-cost starter on anatomy.

What do you think of when you hear the words, “Super Nature?” Do you cautiously peer out the window in search of Godzilla or other larger than life creatures? Or maybe you are like me and find all of nature, super. This amazing resource from Smithsonian looks at the 100 most incredible creatures on the planet. Each 2-page spread identifies the unique trait that sets them apart from the rest, an ‘at a glance’ summary of facts, stats and facts, concise background info, vibrant photographs and colorful graphs.  For example, the longest living animal is the Aldabra Tortoise. Descriptive narrative gives students a base understanding of the tortoise with an emphasis on the Aldabra Tortoise. “At A Glance” showcases the size, habitat, location and diet. (Males can grow up to 4 feet long! Fun science project. Ask your child to lie down so you can measure him. Put a mark at 4 ft. and have him stand up. Is the Aldabra Tortoise taller or shorter?) Stats and Facts provide a simple line graph of average age and weight, including record weight (792 lbs!). and estimated life span (255 years). With this specific page, the tortoise shell is “cut away” to identify internal organs. The photograph also notes physical characteristics of the tortoise body.

Chapters include Amazing Anatomy, Animal Athletes, Life Stories and Supernatural Senses. Within each chapter examples are given in 3 categories: mammals, birds, invertebrates, with additional content on fish and invertebrates in the first 3 chapters. Introductory content contains a cursory overview of evolution and overview on animal bodies and shapes/sizes and habitats and animal lifestyles.

This book presents fascinating information in an engaging and visually appealing manner which will appeal to reluctant readers, or those who think Science is ‘boring.’ I strongly suspect this would have been the most sought after book on our homeschool bookshelf—especially during those long winter months when we needed boredom busters! Glossary and Index. 256 pgs. HC. ~ Deanne

This is a reference book with a twist--from page to page, topics are connected. First you see a satellite image of the earth; on that earth there is small boxed area. On the next page you see that the boxed area was the ocean and the two-page spread has information about elements of the ocean. Or you may see a two-page spread of hot air balloons with the flags of different countries on them. Turn the page to see information about the UN, and the hot air balloons are seen floating outside the window. Turn the page again to see the close-up of a background picture concerning religions in other countries. It's like looking for hidden things in the pictures as a clue for what will follow. I continue to go back to the pages to find the links between them. This 250-page hardcover book covers topics from science and history/geography – nature, human body, earth, people and places, art and culture, history, science and technology, and space. A glossary in the back of the book will help with new or unfamiliar words. Each two-page spread is a large photo surrounded by small photos, illustrations, and bits of information. This book offers more than just reference material as you zoom in and out of the scenes – your children will be encouraged to read and learn with this interactive format. ~ Donna

The human body is one of the most intricate, complex designs in nature, and it makes for fascinating study. This book presents basic anatomy and physiology in an accurate, easy-to-understand way. It presents all 11 of the body's major systems, with emphasis on various organs, shows diagrams and illustrations from historical texts, invites students to take a closer look at the design with "focus" sections, and closes each chapter with thought-provoking questions. Not only does the book give a detailed presentation about the human body; it also presents the material from a creationist standpoint. Each chapter is based on an intelligent design by God, and takes students through all of the evidence for this belief, inspiring them to think it through and weigh the possibility of macroevolution. We really ARE fearfully and wonderfully made. ~ Melissa
