Pocket charts are a versatile teaching tool that can be used for a variety of lessons. This one is made of heavy, reinforced bright blue vinyl with 100 short clear pockets arranged 10x10 and has 1 grommet in each upper corner for hanging. It comes with a set of cardstock number squares 1-100, plus cards for add/subtract/multiply/divide/equals. The cards are red on one side and white on the other. How do you use this pocket chart? Place the number cards in the pockets in numerical order showing all one color. As you are learning to skip count, you can turn the multiples of a number over as you count (3, 6, 9, 12, etc.) You could do the same thing with evens and odds. Use the cards with the +/- to create daily warm-up problems. Your kinesthetic learners will love the opportunity to get up and move around. You could use it as a large 100 number chart too! No wall space? Hang it on the back of a door! ~ Sara

This is a fun book and CD combination to help students memorize their multiplication tables and have fun singing in the process. The CD includes twelve fun tunes that are each sung in a different style. There's a tango, a march, pop-reggae, bluegrass, rock, waltz, a sea chantey, country-western, rhythm and blues, jazz, a rap, and calypso. Though the songs definitely have a beat and there are drums and other instruments involved in a few of the songs, none of the music is exceptionally hard. The song lyrics aren't merely just numbers being multiplied, like many multiplication songs. Each song includes a fun story or encouragement about learning that goes with the style of music, then of course some multiplying of numbers. Songs focus on multiplying by one, counting in twos, counting by threes, multiplying by fours up to 40, counting by fives up to 50, counting by sixes up to 60, multiplying by sevens up to 63, and multiplying by eights up to 88. One song teaches the trick about how to multiply nines, while another jazz song points out that something times nothing is nothing at all. A special song is given to the "hardest" multiplication fact (8 x 7 = 56), and a calypso celebration sings of the joys of multiplication and includes random multiplication of numbers. Overall, this is a very fun CD to listen to, and children will memorize their time tables effortlessly as they sing along. The accompanying book includes lyrics to all the songs, suggestions for each song, and a few reproducible handouts like a hundred number chart for use during certain songs. ~ Rachel

Don't get me wrong – I like stars, but I'm more of a life science girl. While I enjoy stargazing (especially on nights with a chance of shooting stars), I see books written for amateur astronomers and in between the terminology, the multiple charts, the equipment recommendations… it just seems so complicated! When I picked up this guide and realized it was something even I could use with ease, I thought other astronomy-phobes might appreciate it too. This little guide is several things in one: a field guide to constellations, a stargazing challenge-in-a-book, and a source for constellation-related mythology. Plus, it's got a handy little credit card-sized red LED flashlight in the back, so you can read it while stargazing – great idea! The bulk of the book contains constellation field guide entries for the four seasons of the year. Within each season, constellations are arranged in order by how easy they are to locate, and readers are encouraged to start with the easy ones and work towards the more difficult-to-find. Every constellation is given several pages – a full-color illustration of the constellation with major stars noted, the name, size, when to look for it, notes, details on the major stars, and related mythology or astronomical history related to the constellation. There are two methods given for locating the constellation; an overhead map and a horizon map. The overhead map tells you to face south, hold the book overhead, and use the red dot (the point directly overhead), the Big Dipper and the North Star to find the constellation (depicted with a yellow star). The horizon map is organized by the time of year, and tells you which direction to face and how high on the horizon to look. Ingenious! I think I just found a terrific stargazing "buddy." Additional information on stargazing and the solar system is also included; although from a secular publisher, the emphasis is on stargazing, not on the origins of the universe. 320 pgs, pb. – Jess

Children will learn about healthy eating in an interactive and entertaining way. Construct a food pyramid by planning meals throughout the day, focusing not only on consuming appropriate foods but also in proportionate sizes. Hang the 8 ¾” x approx. 24 ¼” chart via the included cord. The food pyramid is divided into color coded sections: pink (sugars); yellow (fats); red (proteins); blue (calcium); green (vitamins, minerals & fibers); brown (starches) and light blue (drinks). As the child eats through the day, he places the magnetic items he eats in the corresponding time of the day (identified with pictures). At the day’s end, reward/identify the child’s eating with one of three color-coded chefs: green chef (balanced diet); yellow chef (unbalanced diet) and red chef (very unbalanced diet). A white chef’s hat is available to place atop your child’s picture and put on the chart. A great game for multiple languages, as directions are in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian and Portuguese. Need to store it? Set folds up at tri-folds, closing like a book and then can be stored in the cardboard carrying case with its plastic handle and lock. The term “game” is a bit of a stretch and the chart is difficult to use for multiple children simultaneously (unless they are each eating exactly the same food). However, this chart can be a great visual and tangible way to instruct your child and help him/her make healthy food choices. Watch out - they may help you with your choices as well! Note: foods are typically in whole form; very little processed food is represented. ~ Ruth
