(Information below provided by Alpha Omega Publications)Prepare your middle school student to excel at upperlevel math with the new Horizons PreAlgebra course! Along with exciting real life applications, this year long math course takes students from basic operations in whole numbers, decimals, fractions, percents, roots, and exponents and introduces them to mathbuilding concepts in algebra, trigonometry and geometry. Divided in to 160 lessons, this course comes complete with one consumable student book, a student test and resources book and an easytouse teacher's guide. Every block of ten lessons begins with a challenging set of problems that prepares students for standardized math testing and features personal interviews showing how individuals make use of math in everyday life. Horizons PreAlgebra includes several areas of new content, including: Absolute Value
Volume and Surface Area of Solids
 Transformations and Nets
 Compound Interest
 Representations of Data
Permutations, Combinations, and Odds and Events
 Two Variable Equations
Four Operations with Monomials and Polynomials
 Trigonometric Ratios
Similar in format to other Horizons K6 courses, the consumable, fullcolor Horizons PreAlgebra Student Book includes 160 daily lessons. Each lesson begins with a teaching box that details the new concept. A class work section has been added to this area of the lesson for guided practice of the new concept. Typical of other Horizons math courses, the activities section of each lesson includes a set of practice problems for the new concept and review problems for previously covered concepts.
Another new feature of the Student Book is a set of college test prep questions that follows each block of 10 lessons. These problems are designed to help students prepare for standardized math testing. This book also includes a new collection of interviews with everyday people who use math in their daily vocations. Setting the stage for each group of lessons, these interviews bring the lessons to life by adding a human interest touch to word problems. (Perfectbound, fullcolor, 8.5 x 11, 360 pages) To see a PDF sample of the Student Book, click here.

The Student Book (textbook) is the instruction, divided into chapters, then into lessons. Important notes about the curriculum and its use are found in the front of the book. Students will read the lesson in the Student Book and complete the activity page found in the Teacher Guide (sold separately or as part of the Book 2 Set). That’s how easy it is to use this curriculum. Don’t confuse easytouse with oversimplified content. After comparing the content of this course with that of Bob Jones, Saxon, Alpha Omega etc., Principles of Mathematics stays with the pack. It covers all pertinent topics for algebra preparation. While there is quite a bit of reading, the language is fairly easy to read and comprehend (conversational). The text is black and white with examples and illustrations, so may not appeal to your more visual learner. Lessons that have recommended calculator use are marked with a calculator symbol.
Book 2 is considered the prealgebra portion of the program, so students need to be competent in basic functions of fractions, decimals, percent, and basic geometry. Book 2 assumes the knowledge of content presented in Book 1; so if you aren’t sure where to begin, have your student take the placement tests available on our website.

A nontechnical book that explains math from counting to calculus. Topics build on one another, providing the reader with a complete overview of mathematics. This book is divided into three sections elementary (numbers, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, percentages, negative numbers, exponents, prealgebra), intermediate (solving one algebraic equation, solving a system of equations, word problems, functions, graphing, geometry, measurement of geometric figures, trigonometry), and advanced (logarithms, complex numbers, finding geometry, using algebra, introducing calculus, the derivative, the integral). This is not a text, but a discussion that includes numerous worked examples. For parents, students, or anyone who wants to understand math. Also useful as a comprehensive math reference. It does no good to have a text without practice of the concepts. Students read the content found in the main text "Understanding Mathematics," then complete the corresponding section in the solutions (companion) guide. The first half of the guide offers hints, examples, explanations, exercises, and problems for practice. Each chapter's content builds on the previous chapter, and initial problems incorporate the new concept presented in the main text and more challenging problems with multiple concepts by the end of the chapter. The second half of the book gives the solutions for all of the problems in the book. A 20question chapter summary concludes each chapter. The text along with the solutions guide provide extra practice in specific skill areas, allow students to work ahead of their curriculum for an added challenge, or can be used for a comprehensive review before taking a standardized test.
