While science experiment books abound, it can be difficult to find good workbooks for science. So, while I usually get excited about science resources, I was particularly pleased to discover this one. Intended to give students more practice and exposure to what is a weak area for U.S. students, this book covers a nice breadth of physical science concepts with a strong mathematical component. The 12 chapters include: molecules, compounds, chemistry, states of matter, mass, weight, gravity, density, Newton's Laws of Motion, simple machines, vectors, electricity, light refraction and reflection, waves, and Kepler's Laws. Chapters vary in length from 3 to nearly 20 pages, with each chapter featuring single pages that include a paragraph or two on the topic and an exercise below. While some of the activities are short answer or fill-in-the-blank, quite a few of them are math-related. In the chapter on simple machines, the first page discusses work, while the following activity gives the reader several situations and asks if work has taken place. The next part moves on to measuring work, using the work equals force times distance equation. Students spend the next two pages calculating work done using both the English and metric system. And if the worksheets in the book aren't enough for you, keep reading. A CD-ROM is included with the book that contains interactive PDF worksheets, additional printable (non-interactive) exercises and reading exercises (which focus on scientific vocabulary) for each chapter. If your current physical science program is weak in the math area, or if you're looking for additional practice, this workbook from Mark Twain Media is a solid choice and is very reasonably priced for the amount of content. Answer keys included, reproducible, 126 pgs, pb. – Jess

Student Packages include student worktext and test booklet.

Consumable student worktext contains a mix of practice problems and word problems. Space is provided to work out the problems, but some students may prefer having access to "scratch paper" to work problems, especially at the higher levels. The front of the student worktext includes space to record grades for worksheet pages and tests.

Consumable test booklet is provided to evaluate student progress. Parents are encouraged to reteach previous lessons if the student does not do well. Mastery is the goal, and lessons build upon one another so that future success is dependent on students really knowing the previous concept.

Not to leave out the eager younger children, this volume provides mini Five in a Row- style lessons for youngsters. This book; however, is divided into two parts, the first being similar to the other curriculum guides. Just as in the original series, each unit is built around a simple, classic children's storybook. This book differs from the older volumes in that it is not structured around a week. The purpose is simply to provide an array of activities for each book that engage children and lay the foundation for further learning. Some of the activities are subject related, such as Bible, science, math, language arts, and art; others are various skills such as learning shapes, sequencing, colors or problem solving, and the rest are centered on specific topics, like relationships, contentment, birthdays or another book-related idea. The second part of this book focuses on arming parents with creative ideas to build learning readiness. This section is a treasure trove of activities that help develop reading readiness and motor skills or focus on the arts. Additional activities also capitalize on teachable moments that arise during bath time, in the kitchen, or during a trip to the store. 149 pgs. ~ Steph

For those looking for extra practice specifically using the Singapore methodology, this series can be used to supplement any Singapore Math curriculum and is aligned to Singapore Math for US Standards. Each level includes five types of activities or exercises. Fact Builders offer practice with specific strategies for understanding concepts, Fact Strategy Practice helps students identify and apply strategies, Apply and Build Knowledge incorporates real-world problems, Writing About Math gives opportunity for students to discover and make connections, and Challenge Questions prepare for the next step in learning. These books are black and white with plenty of space for writing; instruction is minimal since these are intended for practice and reinforcement. Answer Keys aren’t included in the books; however, instructions are found in the front of each book for downloading a free answer key (PDF) at the publisher’s website (http://www.mceducation.us/resources). Help your students become fluent using the Singapore Math methodology. The books vary in length. pb. ~ Donna

Unlike the other levels, Primer, the entry level, is designed to provide a broad overview and introduction to various math topics which will be mastered in a later level. This course lends itself to children who are beginning to recognize numbers but have not mastered counting to ten verbally or are unable to recognize the numbers 0 to 10. If your child is comfortable with both and is ready for formalized instruction, the Alpha Placement Test is recommended.

Children learn to write numerals, addition and subtraction, basic counting, skip counting, geometric shapes, telling time, and they will be introduced to the manipulative block system. It's an introduction to "doing math" the Math-U-See way.

Universal set includes everything necessary for success at the Primer  level including manipulatives, the Instructor Manual and DVD, and consumable student worktext. Also included is 12-month access to the digital package for that level. Digital packages include streaming instruction videos and online Instruction Manual, lesson solutions, and other online resources from any browser. You'll also have access to the MUS Digital Manipulatives, using Chrome or Safari browsers. Digital Packs do not include Student Workbook or Tests.

Primer through Gamma digital packages include Skip Count Songs MP3 and PDF songbook.
