If you liked the original Visual Manna Drawing Book, you'll love the new, improved, and larger version they've just released. Like the previous edition, the only tools you need are a drawing pencil (they recommend a 5H or 6H to start off with) and paper. Like the previous book, this one covers all the bases of a serious drawing program including shading, texture, proportion, perspective, drawing people, buildings and more. But that's as far as the similarity runs. Visual Manna's Master Drawing covers each of these drawing topics in more detail than the Visual Manna Drawing Book, and also includes lessons on using grids, rhythm and value, drawing motion, and also gets into more specifics such as still life, animals, landscapes, cartoons and caricature. As a special treat, a section which features many field sketches of birds by renowned bird artist David Plank are also included in the animals section. Other very helpful lessons include using creativity and how to concentrate on what you are seeing as you draw - both important for the serious sketcher. Lessons are open-ended, and easy to understand, while covering all the basics such as the face being five eyes wide, and finding a vanishing point to draw accurate perspective drawings. This could be implemented with a group of budding artists, or for the older or more driven art student. All the way through, students are reminded to practice, practice, practice... or, should I say, sketch, sketch sketch to improve their mastery of the skills taught. Characteristically Visual Manna, this is a good, solid, Christian-based drawing program that will give aspiring artists a solid start to becoming the next Rembrandt.

Part of Master Books' Wonders of Creation series, this book is more historical in nature than the other titles, which focus more on science. For the first time ever in this series, they have written a book with information tailored to three age groups: 5th-6th grade, 7th-8th grade, and 9th-11th grades. Text geared for each age group is printed on a differently-colored background, with the most basic information (who, what, where, why and how) written to younger readers, and the most complex information (theories, controversies) geared for older readers. Eleven chapters discuss what archaeology is, and then look at archaeology investigations at a number of different ancient Middle Eastern sites, including Egypt, the land of the Hittites, Ur of the Chaldees, Assyria, Babylon, Persia, Petra, the land of the Phoenicians, the Dead Sea Scrolls, and Israel. An overview of the history of locations or cultures is provided in each chapter, along with exciting details on recent discoveries and narratives from the Bible that correlate with the history of a place or related ruler. Maps, full-color photos and notes from the author add further interest. Although the differently-colored blocks of text aren't too hard to get used to as an older reader, younger readers that have an interest in archaeology may browse other sections, and will certainly be interested in perusing the full-color photographs of sites and artifacts. A separate 36-page study guide includes vocabulary, short answer questions, and hands-on activities for each chapter. This is available as a free download at www.masterbooks.net. A wonderful supplement to any study of ancient history, and a great resource for Christian students interested in the field of archaeology. 96 pgs, hc. – Jess

Now updated, a page at the front of the book explains how to use the content with three different learning levels and the page content has color-coded backgrounds for clarity. Text on white background is for 5th/6th, text on light green is for 7th/8th, and text on blue background is for 9th- 11th. An 11"x 24" poster of the ocean's depths is included at the back of the book. Hardcover, 96 pages.

A study guide is available for The Ocean Book. It corresponds by chapter, summarizing the main ideas and providing short answer questions for students to answer as they read through The Ocean Book. Each chapter of the study guide also includes discussion questions, vocabulary, activities, and projects to complete for better understanding of the concepts. These activities may include memorization of scripture, labeling maps, or reading weather maps. The study guide is a supplement to the text and is very helpful as you strive to comprehend and retain the facts presented. Guide is 72 pages, paperback, includes answers, and is not reproducible. - Melissa/Donna

They say that the English language is one of the most difficult to master as there are so many inconsistencies and exceptions. One particular aspect of the English language that may cause trouble is homophones. Homophones account for over 30% of "spelling" mistakes. However, these are not necessarily "spelling" mistakes. Confusion on correct word choice may very well be the source of these "incorrect" spellings. Author Susan Anthony offers this book, designed to accompany Spelling Plus, as a resource guide aimed at teaching students how to differentiate between commonly confused homophones and homonyms in their writing. Background information including definition, part of speech, word history, usage frequency, and a mnemonic device are provided for each word. Additionally, this book contains a worksheet for each of the 130 word pairs covered. Each reproducible activity sheet contains a set of 20 sentences in which the correct word must be filled in. Answers provided. ~ Enh

The Student Book (textbook) is the instruction, divided into chapters, then into lessons. Important notes about the curriculum and its use are found in the front of the book. Students will read the lesson in the Student Book and complete the activity page found in the Teacher Guide (sold separately or as part of the Book 2 Set). That’s how easy it is to use this curriculum. Don’t confuse easy-to-use with over-simplified content. After comparing the content of this course with that of Bob Jones, Saxon, Alpha Omega etc., Principles of Mathematics stays with the pack. It covers all pertinent topics for algebra preparation. While there is quite a bit of reading, the language is fairly easy to read and comprehend (conversational). The text is black and white with examples and illustrations, so may not appeal to your more visual learner. Lessons that have recommended calculator use are marked with a calculator symbol.

Book 2 is considered the pre-algebra portion of the program, so students need to be competent in basic functions of fractions, decimals, percent, and basic geometry. Book 2 assumes the knowledge of content presented in Book 1; so if you aren’t sure where to begin, have your student take the placement tests available on our website.

In this third book in the "Wonders of Creation" series, Dr. Morris explains the structure of the earth we live on and presents evidence and theories of rock and landform formation from a young-earth viewpoint. He includes interesting findings from Mt. St. Helens and other recent catastrophic events, discusses various methods of dating the earth, and presents possible scenarios for Creation and the Flood that fit with a literal interpretation of the Biblical account. The well illustrated and easy to read pages make this a good introduction for the younger student or for anyone who has not been exposed to an alternative to the "millions of years" of most geology texts. Grades 5 and up. ~ Reprinted from Christian Home Educators Curriculum Manuals with permission of Cathy Duffy, Grove Publishing.

The corresponding study guide would be a good tool for small group study and homeschool. Each chapter includes corresponding pages from the book, scripture passages, and questions to answer. There is also a list of vocabulary words to define and suggested activities for each chapter. You can start your own rock collection, make a fossil, and study erosion. This 44-page study guide is not reproducible. An answer key is included. 5" x 8", softcover. ~ Donna

There is more to this program than what might initially meet the eye. Seemingly only a series of six smallish workbooks, these provide the structure for a one-on-one tutoring relationship that will give an older student the tools he/she needs to become a successful reader. Organized by phonics but aiming for mastery, not only of phonics-based words but also of sight words, the six books each have five lessons. At a mastery rate (achievable with consistent work) of one lesson per week, the series can be completed in about 8 months and will take the student from a just beginning reading level to a fifth level.

Lessons follow a pattern. Phonics Word Reading provides lists of words – organized by phonics sound – for the student to read and master. Interestingly, although the lessons start with short vowel sounds – they also cover additional sounds. For instance, the short a lesson also includes r-controlled a and all/aw words. This part of the lesson also includes a list of “Challenge Words” – compound words related to the lesson sound. The Spelling portion of the lesson includes a word list for the student to read and learn to spell followed by activities (i.e., fill in the blanks, write words from list under pictures). Sight Words are covered by flashcard lists (can be reproduced and cut apart) and more fill-in-the-blank exercises. Reading practice takes the form of Bible Stories (one per lesson) taken from the Old Testament and in chronological order through the workbooks. The student first listens to the story, finds/marks sight words, completes review and comprehension exercises, reads the story and then retells it in his own words.

Checklists abound in these books – an overall list in the back of the book and within each lesson – while the inside front cover is a Progress Chart. This is where the one-on-one tutoring design of the series becomes apparent. A Tutor Guide is included with each set of workbooks providing helpful information for the tutor as well as the expectations for the tutoring relationship. As a mastery program, flexibility, consistency, and positive reactions to student efforts are essentials for success. Before starting, students need to have a basic knowledge of the alphabet: recognize letters, say letter names, write the letters, and know the usual sounds of consonants. Additional tutor training videos are available as free downloads on the publisher’s website. Each book is 40 pgs, pb. ~ Janice

A Biblically based activity book that helps your preschooler review colors, numbers, letters, shapes, opposites and other basic skills (such as sequencing). The book tells the story of Noah with pleasant rhyme, detailed pictures to color in, and activities to do. It also directs students to learn various key concepts. For example, color the grain that Ham and his wife gather yellow; follow steps to draw a rectangle since the ark was rectangular shaped; learn alphabet letters using the included Noah Alphabet song. Each page emphasizes the story while reinforcing preschool concepts so children review both simultaneously. Activities include tracing, coloring, mazes, counting, etc. A nice, Biblically based review activity book. From Master Books and part of the Biblical Beginnings for Preschoolers curriculum. 8 1/2” x 11”, 98 pp, sc. ~ Ruth
