For some kids, the study of history can be well, dry. Spark their interest with Amazing Facts in U.S. History! This activity book contains a series of quizzes on strange, but interesting, facts about Early Explorers, Native Americans, the First Thanksgiving, the 13 Colonies, the Revolution, the Gold Rush, the Civil War, World War II, U.S. Presidents, and more!

Prior to each quiz is a summary of the topic to follow, the actual quiz questions are not covered. The goal is to spark interest in a topic. These would be an excellent way to excite interest in a topic or use as a guide for a history based unit study or research project. Quiz answer sheets provide explanations for the more unusual facts. Several "mystery from history" sections, which involve logic puzzles and word games, are also included. ~ Anh/Deanne

Learning how to diagram sentences can really help students visualize how the different parts of speech work together to form sentences. However, this skill isn't always included in English books. This workbook provides a wonderful supplement to any curriculum. It covers sentence diagramming from easy to challenging, one step at a time. After reading simple explanations and seeing examples, students practice with similar sentences. The worksheets start with just subjects and predicates and then progress to adjectives, adverbs, direct and indirect objects, appositives, interjections, prepositional phrases, participles, and gerunds. Reviews are scattered throughout, which can be used as quizzes or test if desired. The worksheets are perforated and reproducible. Answers included, 46 pgs. - Melissa

The daily warm-ups provided in this book will help young students understand various aspects of the Constitution and U.S. government. Each worksheet provides five quick exercises (one for each school day) that review certain parts of the constitution. Exercise examples include listing items (like listing 5 powers given to Congress), true or false, defining words, writing an opinion about an issue, short answer questions, and more. Thereââ‚™s a wide variety of exercise types so students wonââ‚™t get bored, and each exercise shouldnââ‚™t take more than 5-10 minutes a day. The entire Constitution (with amendments) is printed in the front of the book (taking up 18 reproducible pages) and students can use it as a reference to answer most of the daily questions. Exercise pages are also reproducible and perforated, so you can hand out each exercise day by day, or just give your student the page to complete the entire week of activities. The exercises are organized into convenient units covering the legislative, executive, and judicial branches, Articles 4, 5, and 6, the Bill of Rights, and the rest of the amendments to the Constitution. This concise, consumable resource provides students of the First World War with exposure to the primary causes of the conflict, and the struggle for neutrality that raged in the U. S. and elsewhere. Readers also learn about the daily life of soldiers on the Western Front who were engaged in trench warfare, as well as issues related to the role of propaganda. The final lessons include important details regarding the political effects of the Treaty of Versailles that ended the Great War. Each of the twenty-one lessons focuses on some important military or political aspect of the war, and provides students with online research assignments and targeted questions that help give them a greater understanding of the issues. Students also gain significant exposure to primary source material, such as treaties and original letters from soldiers, while they learn how to interpret relevant maps and graphs. Helping to develop the skills necessary for a wide variety of writing styles, this workbook provides lessons in the five most common types of writing: personal, descriptive, short stories, poetry, and non-fiction/reports. Chapters work through the necessary concepts from the easiest to the most challenging, for a total of 113 lessons. While the title states "for the middle-school classroom," all of these lessons can very easily be used as individual assignments or as supplemental activities in the homeschool setting. While science experiment books abound, it can be difficult to find good workbooks for science. So, while I usually get excited about science resources, I was particularly pleased to discover this one. Intended to give students more practice and exposure to what is a weak area for U.S. students, this book covers a nice breadth of physical science concepts with a strong mathematical component. The 12 chapters include: molecules, compounds, chemistry, states of matter, mass, weight, gravity, density, Newton's Laws of Motion, simple machines, vectors, electricity, light refraction and reflection, waves, and Kepler's Laws. Chapters vary in length from 3 to nearly 20 pages, with each chapter featuring single pages that include a paragraph or two on the topic and an exercise below. While some of the activities are short answer or fill-in-the-blank, quite a few of them are math-related. In the chapter on simple machines, the first page discusses work, while the following activity gives the reader several situations and asks if work has taken place. The next part moves on to measuring work, using the work equals force times distance equation. Students spend the next two pages calculating work done using both the English and metric system. And if the worksheets in the book aren't enough for you, keep reading. A CD-ROM is included with the book that contains interactive PDF worksheets, additional printable (non-interactive) exercises and reading exercises (which focus on scientific vocabulary) for each chapter. If your current physical science program is weak in the math area, or if you're looking for additional practice, this workbook from Mark Twain Media is a solid choice and is very reasonably priced for the amount of content. Answer keys included, reproducible, 126 pgs, pb. – Jess

This inexpensive resource book offers a wealth of terrific life science labs that easily correlate with any life science text, and introduces middle schoolers to lab equipment. It is organized into eight chapters, covering cells, DNA, heredity, simple organisms, the plant kingdom, the animal kingdom, ecosystems, and ecosystem cycles and biomes. Each chapter includes information, a related science lab activity, and a review worksheet. The information is succinctly presented, often with diagrams, charts, and bulleted lists. The lab activities are excellent, and you might be familiar with some of the old life science standbys. In the chapter on cells, three pages are devoted to explaining discoveries related to cells, the parts of a microscope, the main parts of a cell, and the differences between plant and animal cells. Several labs follow, including one where you make microscope slides with onion tissue and cells from a cheek swab and compare the cells, make a cell model using gelatin and a variety of other items, and demonstrate the process of osmosis doing a lab with a bag of scented gelatin in a bath of warm water and iodine. Now, not all chapters are that involved – many of them are much shorter, with fewer activities. Teacher resource pages are found at the end of both units in the book, and these include enrichment activities and an answer key. While you will need iodine, slides and cover slips, a microscope, and a magnifying glass for the labs, all other equipment seems to be readily available household items. 94 pages, reproducible. – Jess

The activities presented in this book cover many aspects of health and nutrition in a very user-friendly manner. Each chapter begins with Teacher Notes that introduce the topic at hand, offer suggestions for extended lessons, and provide answers for the book's activities if applicable. Then, a wide variety of activities relating to that topic provide students with lots of practical, hands-on experience. For example, students are taught how to read the BMI table and are asked to examine food labels to understand special labeling such as low fat vs. reduced fat. Topics covered include but are not limited to the food pyramid, breakfast, whole grains, reading labels, exercise, BMI, fruits & vegetables, sugar, caffeine, fats, protein, snacking, and allergies. Reproducible. – Enh
