This book gives a detailed, interesting account of United States history in a story-telling style. Full-color photographs and illustrations that support the text add to the learning experience. Timelines, profiles of historical figures, maps, charts, and graphs also help in learning and building map-reading skills. Meant to be used as an aid with any social studies curriculum, the book begins with an account of the arrival of the first Americans who traveled from Asia over the Bering Land Bridge and ends with a discussion of the information super highway of the twenty first century. The book is not written from a Christian perspective and religious references are not included.

The book is broken down into ten units that tell of different eras in our history. Unit One tells about the Americas until the early 1500's. It discusses how people first came to the continent and tells of ancient Native American culture. Unit Two covers from 1492 to 1700 and shares the European exploration of America. Unit Three tells of the adventures that took place and the people involved during the colonial times of 1550 to 1775. Unit Four discusses the Revolutionary War and the beginning years of the nation from 1775 to 1810. Unit Five discusses the expansion of the U.S. from 1785 to 1860. Topics such as Lewis and Clark, The Erie Canal, the gold rush, and the Pony Express are covered. Unit Six tells about the Civil War, covering everything from slavery to Gettysburg to Lincoln's assassination. Unit Seven portrays the life events of the American people from 1865 to 1900. The railroad, pioneer life, and the Nez Perce are just a few of the topics covered in this section. Unit Eight covers from 1890-1920, including inventions like the airplane or ideas like the assembly line or the beginning of women's suffrage. Unit Nine tells of some struggles America overcame from 1914-1945, such as WW I, the Great Depression, the Dust Bowl, and WW II, but it also lists some positive things that happened during the period, such as Jesse Owens winning Olympic medals and Charles Lindbergh crossing the Atlantic. The final unit covers 1950 to the present time.

Students read about all these historical events in a pleasant manner, and included activities add interest. Activities include writing essays about events or people, identifying things on maps, filling out word puzzles, and creating time-lines. Answers included. ~ Rachel S.

Colorful, appealing, and kid-friendly, the Classroom Atlas from Rand McNally is the next step up from the Junior Classroom Atlas (#007961) with more maps, more detail and more information. The book begins with a section defining map terminology. Next are nine world maps, each with a different emphasis: physical, political, climates, population density, and time zones, to name a few. Following are physical, political, and thematic maps for each continent. Thematic maps might showcase climate, environments, population, economic activities, natural hazards, or transportation. Each continent map section begins with an introduction that provides a historical and geographical overview of the continent, a timeline, and photos of people, places, animals, or landmarks from the continent. Additional maps are provided of the United States, Canada, and Mexico/Middle America. Graphs, charts, and "Did You Know?" fact boxes add visual interest and content. Interesting Top 10 lists (i.e. Largest lakes, longest rivers, most populated countries) are printed in the front and back inside cover. Index included. This is the 13th edition, copyright 2015 and includes North and South Sudan. 208 pgs, pb. ~ Lisa

This atlas from Rand McNally bridges the gap between simpler atlases geared to younger students and adult reference-only atlases. Like its adult cousins, this atlas is packed full of colorful maps and handy reference material; however, it also includes some student-friendly features such as charts/graphs, and narrative text. The atlas begins with an overview of map terminology. Next are sections on the earth/solar system, plate tectonics, climate, and other topics pertaining to physical geography. A twelve-page countries and flags of the world section presents basic information about 199 countries. Seven world maps are included: political, physical, climate, economic, population density, environments, and time zones. Detailed political and physical maps are provided for each of the seven continents and the U.S., plus thematic maps and select regional/country maps. Some examples of the continent thematic maps include: climate, population, environments/land use, or special topics specific to the continent (i.e. destruction of the rain forest in South America). Glossary and index included. 176 pgs, pb. Revisd in 2017. ~ Lisa

Subtitled "Everything Your Schoolbooks Didn't Tell You About America's Westward Expansion," this book approaches US history in a fun, often humorous way. The author, Steve Sheinkin, was previously a textbook writer, and he explains in the forward that he wasn't able to use all the stories he came across while researching for his textbooks, so he decided to put those stories here. You won't find boring charts, lists, graphs, dates, and review questions in this book; instead, you will find memorable stories and anecdotes that cover the period from the Louisiana Purchase through the Lakota massacre at Wounded Knee in 1890. For example, did you know that explorer William Clark was a poor speller? Or that pioneers burned a mixture of cow chips and dried buffalo for fuel when wood was scarce? Humorous cartoon illustrations and maps add visual interest to this unconventional (yet thorough) look at westward expansion. At the end of the book you'll find additional details about people mentioned in the book, a bibliography, a list of quotes, and an index. This revised edition adds an interview with the author and an excerpt from King George: What was His Problem?278 pgs, pb. ~ Lisa

Both sides of this 11" x 17" graph mat have 1 cm. square graph design. One side has labeling lines across the bottom and left side of the mat. Use horizontally or vertically for line graphs, bar graphs, as a mapping or drawing grid, or for anything you'd use graph paper for! Although you can use either a dry-erase or wet-erase marker, if using with wet-erase, use only a damp (not wet) cloth to wipe as too much water will ruin the mat.
