Denise Eide passionately believes that mastery of English (literacy) could be greatly simplified by:

Understanding that there is a method behind the madness; English is systematic (at least 98% of the time)

Learning and embracing the rules of this system

And here I thought this was common knowledge. Now I understand why Spelling is one of our largest-selling areas. I was not aware that, according to the National Report Card, 34% of fourth graders cannot read and 68% are below proficient. Apparently, this has gone on for some time since 48% of all adults are also not proficient readers, according to the same report. The author also bemoans the fact that "intensive phonics is saved almost exclusively for students who struggle". Written in 2011, this book is not an outdated tome from the sight-reading era. Apparently, this is the current state of affairs in the country at large. The author firmly believes that the cause of the problem is that the structure, the logic, of English is not understood or taught. This not only hinders reading, writing, and spelling skills, but results in discouraged children who become illiterate adults. In writing this book, the author hoped to demystify the English system for parents and teachers, helping them turn the situation around in our nation. I think she has succeeded in this volume. Her presentation is comprehensive, clear, and well-organized. Helpful charts and tables punctate the concise text, lending additional structure and simplification to the narrative. A list of tables in the front helps you find specific information quickly. The book concludes with appendices that sum up most of the material in lists or charts providing a handy, ongoing reference.

While I hope most homeschoolers have used or are using an intensive phonics program, this book would be an excellent refresher and reference. If you are one of the many homeschoolers whose children were taught to read in the public school system, you need to get this book and read it. Then you need to teach the rules of the English system to your children. If your children are past the phonics stage, but still having trouble with reading or spelling, this book will help you back up, understand the system, and get your children back on track. And, if you are just starting to teach your children to read, you will want to read this book first. Then, for more direct teaching materials, see the Logic of English program from Pedia Learning, inspired by this volume.

This book contains sixteen counting problems with riddles to solve them. For each riddle, a certain number of illustrated objects are grouped together in different ways. The riddle then gives a clue about a trick to count the items more efficiently than by simply counting each item separately. The book is full of colorful pictures, bright colors, and fun objects to count such as food items, snails, camels, and more. The fun quality of this book makes it ideal for teaching counting strategies that will build a great mathematical foundation for any student. The math tricks given in the riddles are explained more thoroughly in the back of the book and include the answers for each riddle so students can check their own answers. ~ Rachel S.

For those spare minutes in your school day, try incorporating these short logic activities. While some may require just a minute or two of thinking, others may keep your students busy for closer to five or ten minutes. Either way, their minds will be stretched instead of sitting idle. Each logic problem is written on its own page of the half-size book, so you can easily make copies of the warm-ups for multiple students or simply write the problems on a whiteboard where everyone can see it. Answers are included in the back of the book. 207 pgs. – Melissa

They weren't kidding when they named this book! These logic puzzles are definitely Mensa-worthy brainteasers. Many of the puzzles deal with determining order, as in a seating arrangement, the order of ingredients added to a potion, or the sequence of events in a nightmare, for example. Other puzzles require using clues to correctly matching up columns, such as linking first names with last names and an occupation. Although these sound just like clue-grid puzzles, these are much more difficult because you aren't provided with a rubric to help organize and eliminate possibilities. 67 puzzles. ~ Anh

This survey course is intended to be "a journey through the basics of the Christian faith." The program is divided into 30 lessons and assumes a group setting with an instructor and multiple students. The first unit is seven lessons on the Bible, and the next seven are on church history. Four lessons cover the major doctrines of the Christian faith, with the next three discussing the defense of your faith (apologetics). Four lessons discuss other religions and the occult, three discuss our current age (the postmodern culture) and the last two help the student to become a more effective witness.

The course materials consist of a book with perforated pages and a CD-ROM. Both the instructor pages and the student pages are in this book. Instructor pages give teaching directions, basic material that the teacher should present in class, and sometimes charts or a quiz with answer key. The instructor may want to flesh out the information to be presented in class with additional research. (This will certainly be necessary with the section on other religions, as almost no material is included here.) Student pages contain additional information (different from the information in the teacher pages). The CD-ROM includes PDF's of appropriate maps (also shown in the book) and the student pages.

As mentioned at the outset, this is a survey course, so the course is covering a lot of ground and not going into much depth. Besides being used as a Sunday School class, the course could serve as a 1-year refresher for a high school student before going off to college. sc, 291 pgs.

The meanings of words change over time. Take the word "marriage," for example. Who knows how a modern secular dictionary will define it tomorrow? Fortunately, we have a standard available that will not change, because the definitions are based on the word's Biblical usage and basis in one of 26 original languages. This reprint of Noah Webster's classic is nearly a textbook in itself, as it gives examples of word usage from classical literature and the Bible. What better way to understand the writings of America's founding fathers than to define their words as they would have understood them.

Everyone in your family will be able to benefit from these drawing lessons which approach the skill of drawing in bite-size, incremental steps. The CD-ROM contains 30 lessons, each resulting in the same basic project, but with slightly different directions for students in grades in the grammar stage (grades 1-4), the logic stage (grades 5-8), and the rhetoric stage (grades 9-12). In the grammar stage, the author expects that students will learn basic color theory, basic shapes and lines, basic shading and shadowing techniques, and the ability to imitate styles of classic artists. Objectives for the logic stage are similar as for the grammar stage, but with the expectation that the older student will develop more sophisticated skills and understanding in color theory, shading and shadowing. By the rhetoric stage, students should be learning composition, advanced color theory, advanced shading and shadowing techniques as well as developing their own individual style in their art. Although the lessons can be used for class, co-op, or home use, no artistic experience on the teacher's part is required. The author suggests that as the teacher, you will probably want to do the lesson yourself before class, and perhaps do it along with them during class. The lessons are designed to take about an hour to complete, and the author suggests a pace of one lesson per week. Lessons begin with drawing basic shapes and progress to include contour drawings; shading and shadowing; creating highlights; the color wheel; using monochromatic, complementary, and analogous colors in a drawing; shading with color, perspective, drawing in different styles, drawing portraits, creating a pleasing composition and more.

The lessons are very easy to use. They are accessible from the "lessons" tab at the top of the main screen, or you can jump into Lesson 1 after reading the basic information about the program. Each lesson consists of a teaching portion and a printable student handout for each. The lessons progress down the screen and include an objective for the lesson, the materials needed, and step-by-step instruction through the lesson. Each step is accompanied by an example of what the drawing should approximately resemble at that point, although depending on the skill level of the student, this will vary. The student handouts are typically a visual reference for the student for each lesson. Because the lessons are displayed on a computer, it would be hard for all students to see the subject they are drawing at the same time. Most of the student handouts will need to be printed in color, so you will probably need to have a color printer available to you. As far as supplies go, you will need to gather a few, but they are relatively inexpensive. Each student will need a set of 24 oil pastels, a set of 24 colored pencils, compressed charcoal, willow charcoal, a charcoal pencil, a white drawing pastel, a kneaded eraser, a blending stump, low-tack masking tape, tinted charcoal paper (9" x 12), white drawing paper (9" x 12"), newsprint paper (9" x 12"), and colored construction paper (9" x 12").

All in all, it's a great basic course that you can use with all of your children at the same time, without the older ones getting bored or the younger ones being frustrated. Everyone can take learn or refine their own skill while working through the lessons. Because the "models" are usually photos included in the lesson material, the students could apply the same techniques to photos of their own selection to expand the lessons or practice further. I think that the CD-ROM format is an interesting choice, but I can see how it is a practical way for everyone to be able to see the lesson without sharing a book, and the student handouts can all be printed which avoids the issue of having student packets or even having to reproduce pages for each student. A lot of concepts are covered here, taught mostly from example and the student's drawing experience. Because the lessons are so straightforward and foundational, I could see a definite advantage in revisiting at least some of them each year, as students grow older and more skillful. The folks at Practical Homeschooling are fans too - The Phonics of Drawing received the first-place award in their Interactive Learning Awards for art. System requirements (PC only) are: Windows 98 or higher, CD-ROM drive. – Jess

Maybe your girls have read some or all of the American Girls books just for fun. If they haven't read them yet, what's a better and more reader-friendly basis for studying American history? That's what Cindy Sotelo must have been thinking as she put together this curriculum for her girls. The idea caught on with their friends, and a girl's history study group formed, eager to participate in all the activities of the study. The study is divided into seven units, each based on one American Girl, and arranged in chronological order of their time periods from Felicity to Molly. Each unit is designed to take about six weeks to complete, less if you would like to fit all seven units into a traditionally scheduled school year, or more if you feel you would like to spend more time on each unit and fill more of the year with it or stretch it over into the next school year. The primary reading material for each unit is, of course, the six American Girl books for the featured American Girl, although additional reading suggestions are included and there is plenty of room for your own as well. The American Girl Teacher's Guides, Welcome to ______'s World, as well as the American-girl specific Cookbook, Craft Book, Paper Dolls, Theater Kit/Six Plays, as well as selected Childhood of Famous Americans are also recommended for each unit. Unfortunately, many of the supplemental American Girl items such as the Teacher's Guides and Cookbooks are out of print, however, you may be able to find them at your library. The Craft books appear to be coming back as Color & Crafts, and the Paper Dolls have been republished as well. Internet resources are also listed for each unit, each with a synopsis of what you will find and use from each site. Each unit begins with a list of resources, both book, video, and internet, followed by a content overview for that unit. The week-by-week unit plans include projects for each day. Necessary forms are included throughout the unit, as well as on the accompanying CD-ROM. The daily projects include the approximate time required, materials needed (mostly arts/crafts items and household items you have on hand) as well as the skills covered, followed by detailed instructions. Along the way, numerous samples of student work is included, so you can see some examples of what other students have done with the projects, or have added to the rest of the study.

As far as subject content, the study covers quite a bit of social studies and history, some diverse science topics, biographies of famous people, U.S. geography through history, supplemental math activities, and character education. Language arts is also covered in some detail, including dictionary skills, literature, grammar/usage, general writing skills, creative writing and journalism. I should note the math included is not intended to provide a solid mathematical foundation but is included as a supplement. You will need to continue a complete math program during this study. If the child is an early reader, you may also need to supplement with further phonics and reading instruction, and unless you take an aggressive approach to the spelling/vocabulary found in the reading of this program, you will probably need to supplement a spelling program as well. That being said, the rest of this curriculum contains a solid social studies, literature, and language arts core that provides numerous avenues to more in-depth topics, available to you to wander through and research as you wish. The author has suggested numerous other ways to extend the subjects, including keeping a portfolio by time period and other projects her daughters and friends became interested in as they studied each era. She also arms you with lists of tips, helps, and adaptations for different situations (new or reluctant readers, children with attention difficulties, and older students), as well as multiple suggestions for using the study with boys. An appendix contains additional forms, along with suggestions for real-life writing, quiet/devotional time, and a sample schedule for a girl's history club meeting. While you can just pick up the book and use it with a set of American Girls books, a few supplemental books and a computer, the study will be much more well-rounded and beneficial if a little research and organizational time is put in up front. A great unit study that is sure to get your girls (and maybe even boys) interested in history and a variety of other subjects. This would also work well for a co-op class. - Jess

The resurrection of Jesus Christ is a foundational truth of Christianity. As such, it is important for us to be equipped to defend the historicity of this event, both to strengthen our own faith as well as to clearly share the truth with others. This book and interactive CD, a collaborative effort by Gary Habermas and Michael Licona, recognized experts on the topic of the resurrection, provide a comprehensive defense of the evidence of Christ's physical resurrection and prepares you to use that information to confidently share your faith with others. The authors begin with a focus on sharing your faith with a discussion on using evidence in sharing the gospel, the importance of the resurrection to Christian faith, and an overview of the principals used by historians to assess credibility of historical accounts. Part two turns to the evidence for Jesus' resurrection, using a "minimal facts approach," which offers a detailed look at five facts that build a simple, yet strong case for the resurrection. Opposing theories are addressed in section three. As the authors explain under the "minimal facts approach," these theories must address the five established facts in order to be logical explanations. Following this method, they analyze a number of major opposing theories, including arguments by naturalists, psychologically based theories, and legend and lie theories among many others, detailing each and its refutation in turn. The chapters in section four bring up other issues that skeptics may bring up and how to address them, such as the nature of Jesus' resurrection body, who Jesus claimed to be, and the existence of God himself, among others. The final chapter in this section offers advice on how to effectively communicate with others. In between reading the wealth of information contained in each section, open up the included interactive CD to take some fun, practical quizzes that will test your understanding of the material. For further reference, the appendix contains a detailed outline of the arguments, further notes on items referred to in the main text (denoted by subscript numbers in each chapter), and a bibliography. 352 pages. ~ Steph

If you are looking for a practical, workbook-based Bible study, this is a good one to consider. It completes a survey of the history and geography of the entire Bible, from Genesis to Revelation. In 52 lessons (which conveniently works out to one per week for a calendar year) students will be engaged in learning about the geographical features and the roles they played in the histories of the various nations involved with the Holy Land. The workbook is divided into two main parts: the first is a brief look at the physical attributes of all Bible lands in seven lessons, while the second (which contains the rest of the lessons) correlates the history and geography. The text in each lesson is descriptively detailed and is also consumable. At various places throughout the text, biblical references point students to the passage that will help them find the answer to fill in the blank. Map activities also abound, and there are both blank outline maps and full color reference maps throughout the workbook. Students' knowledge is tested through eleven periodic review lessons. The only other resource a student should need to complete this is a Bible, and the study can be completed at whatever pace is best for the student. A very comprehensive study! – Zach

Sequel to The Fallacy Detective, this is by the same authors. While the first book focuses on recognizing bad reasoning, this book offers thirty-five lessons for strengthening your reasoning skills. The chapters provide you with tools for thinking, tools for opposing viewpoints, and tools for science. Within these chapters, you'll find lessons on when not to argue, finding the premises and conclusion, determining primary or secondary sources, circumstantial evidence, keen observation, brainstorming, analyzing data, and much more. This book is formatted much like The Fallacy Detective, with plenty of clear examples throughout the lessons and lengthy exercises following each lesson. Answers included, 234 pgs. - Melissa

If you're thinking about homeschooling, need some encouragement as you homeschool, or want something to give to friends or family to explain homeschooling, look no further. David and Kim d'Escoto summarize nicely, from a Biblical worldview, the history of homeschooling and the benefits for your family.

As they explain the history of homeschooling, you'll also learn about the inception of public schools, as well as famous homeschooled people throughout history. The d'Escoto's then tell you the benefits to your child's mind, body and soul in the remaining pages. The advantages of homeschooling include things like quality family time, learning at the child's pace, multi-age teaching, allowance for creativity and intellectual growth, better meeting the physical needs of each individual child, and laying a firm foundation in Christ. These items are just a few in the lengthy list of opportunities that await those who choose to homeschool. A lot of information is packed in this small, 81 page book. The authors conclude with the "Afterword" which is where they list some very important ideas for having a successful homeschool. One of which is to pray about the decision and the planning, and seek God's will for your family. - Donna
