Studying the medieval period with multiple ages? This retelling of Sir Gawain (nephew of King Arthur and knight of the round table) and his adventures is written specifically to draw in your upper elementary/middle school readers. While written for younger audiences (includes larger font size as well), there’s no skimping in style or vocabulary, maintaining much of the original’s key plot as well as the moral dilemmas. The multiple black and white watercolor and pastel drawings range from filling portions of a page to two-page spreads. Note: the story involves mythical and sometimes gruesome elements. Some of the drawings highlight this (the headless green knight) and two drawings show the outline of a female figure in rather transparent garb. 5x7 3/4", 177 pp, sc. ~ Ruth

The Legends of King Arthur and His Court is based on a 1908 rendition of the King Arthur legends. There are scores of Arthurian legends out there, sometimes containing disturbing elements. This version follows the noble style set forth by Alfred Lord Tennyson, who emphasized chivalry. In this text the knights’ words are actual lines from Tennyson. Ten stories span Arthur’s life: being crowned king, marrying Guinevere, creating the Knights of the Round Table, chasing the holy grail, etc.

Inviting and sumptuously-illustrated, this book promises a much more "browsable" tour of American history than a textbook could ever provide. Eight chapters cover the history of America from the time of the first European settlements to the present. Each chapter focuses on a particular period in U.S. history, and combines a written account of the history of that time period with a wealth of detailed maps, interesting related articles, period artwork and/or photos and portraits. Each chapter also features one or several focused "profiles", or short biographies, of notable people that lived during that period as well as a "Great Debate" which focuses on an issue which was controversial in that era. The writing is interesting and engaging, and manages to give an overall view of the period while weaving in fascinating details and aspects of daily life for various groups of people who lived during that era as well. Visuals are plentiful here, and offer the reader lots of browsing material. Interesting photos, paintings, ads, documents, and much more spice up every page and offer the reader glimpses into the culture and daily life during each period. Important historical documents, including the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, the Gettysburg Address, and the Pledge of Allegiance are all included after the last chapter. A list of recommended websites, historic places to visit, dates that states entered the Union, U.S. Presidents and their terms of office, and a bibliography round out this collection. Engaging and educational, yet attractive enough to be a coffee table book, the book delivers on its promise of giving readers an overall look at American history, and the events and people that have made history over the years. I would like to note, however, that like many other secular history books, this one tends to treat the beliefs of the Puritans as equal to the beliefs of the Native Americans, and seems to advocate the belief that because the "white man" believed that he was superior in race and religion, that it was all right to slaughter innocent Native Americans and mistreat slaves, servants, and immigrants of different races. I agree that this is a difficult part of American history to write about, but I get the sense that the tone here is far from objective and may be offensive to more conservative readers. - Jess

I love clean, simple design: no fuss, it just works. This art paper-roll holder/dispenser is made from an unfinished plywood base with soft, rounded edges. Wooden blocks, washers, screws & wing nuts hold the roll in place. You slide the paper under another strip of wood to tear it off cleanly (no blade). Kids can easily change the roll themselves. Base is 21.5" x 5.5" and .5" high. Easy assembly instructions (w/illustrations) are included. Designed to hold 16.5" rolls of 100' of paper. Hard maple & Baltic birch; 4 lbs. The Constitution is one of our country's most important documents, but that does not mean it is an easy read. The language of 1787 can be hard to interpret for students and adults. U.S. Constitution -- Graphic Adaptation looks like a comic book. It introduces kids to the people involved in the founding of our country. It covers how it was determined that states are represented in Washington D.C., then goes into the Presidency where it skips around from modern times to the past. While I was little confused by this, I think kids who are into comics would appreciate the non-linear approach. The point is to learn how the Constitution came to be, and if a graphic adaptation is what helps your student understand the material, then have a go and try this one. It may be just what your child needs. ~ Sara

Imagine you had a whole set of inventions applying to different fields of research… Well, invention cards, at least. In this game, players are "invention traders", with the goal of accumulating a diverse set of inventions from the 7 categories, such as Energy, Communications, and Medicine. To start, each player calls out a color, and someone rolls the die. Whoever's color is rolled first picks their invention set, and selection continues. Each round, you roll a die to choose which invention you roll for a color used by someone in the group. If it matches, you can trade for any invention with one of your own. Eventually, one trader will be the first to nab one of each set and close the game with a tap on the table. ~ Stephen
