There are many tales of bravery and chivalry, of battles and adventures surrounding King Arthur and his knights. One such tales is of Sir Gareth of Orkney, retold here as the Kitchen Knight. An unknown young man turns up at King Arthur's court with three requests; the first is for food and shelter for a year, at the end of which the two other requests will be asked. These last two requests find him on an adventure to rescue a proud lady's sister from the most fearsome and perilous knight alive. How does he handle himself in battle? How does he handle himself under the scorn of the proud lady? How does he handle himself in the final big test? The full-page illustrations are bright and colorful, and the language goes well with the genre of the story. Pb, 32 pgs. ~ Zach

Sir Thomas Malory's Le Morte d' Arthur is one of the greatest epics of the fifteenth century. His chivalric tales of King Arthur, Queen Guinevere, Sir Lancelot, and Merlin spawned many adaptations that continue to entertain audiences today. Death of King Arthur is one such retelling, by the historian Peter Ackroyd. Ackroyd states in the beginning of the book, "I have tried my best to convert Malory's sonorous and exhilarating prose into a more contemporary idiom…I have also chosen to abbreviate the narrative in pursuit of clarity and simplicity." Ackroyd is a great storyteller; his "translation" is very readable and stays true to the spirit of Malory's original work. A must-read for any fan of Arthurian legends. 316 pgs, pb. ~ Lisa

This is the classic novel about a man named Hank, who is knocked unconscious in the gun factory where he works and wakes up in Britain at the time of Camelot. Though he is at first imprisoned and sentenced to death, his "futuristic" ways soon lead him to safety and adoration. He introduces all kinds of modern ideas and processes to the medieval era, earning praise from some and hatred from others. Readers will love this humorous and satiric novel, written by the great Mark Twain. 268 pgs, pb. ~Rachel

"It was in Warwick Castle that I came across the curious stranger whom I am going to talk about" – and so Mark Twain introduces us to the "true" story of a nineteenth-century American man who finds himself transported back to medieval times after a hard hit to the head. We meet the curious stranger, Hank Morgan, as a fellow tourist and soon find that he knows much more about the castle's history than even the tour guide. The rest of this fast-paced novel is a reading from Mr. Morgan's journal, provided as proof of his unbelievable Round Table adventures. Cleverly using his nineteenth-century knowledge, Morgan fools the court into thinking that he is a wizard – perhaps even more powerful than Merlin! Assuming the superiority of the nineteenth century and blind to its flaws, Morgan attempts to modernize the middle ages with hilarious, and sometimes disastrous, results. Hidden beneath the comical scenes is a thought-provoking social satire, making this a true intellectual classic. 316 pages, paperback. – Rachel

The Legends of King Arthur and His Court is based on a 1908 rendition of the King Arthur legends. There are scores of Arthurian legends out there, sometimes containing disturbing elements. This version follows the noble style set forth by Alfred Lord Tennyson, who emphasized chivalry. In this text the knights’ words are actual lines from Tennyson. Ten stories span Arthur’s life: being crowned king, marrying Guinevere, creating the Knights of the Round Table, chasing the holy grail, etc.
