How to Dissect is a one-stop book for all of your dissecting guidelines. This book offers step-by-step illustrations and instructions for dissecting an earthworm, crayfish, grasshopper, clam, squid, starfish, shark, perch, frog, and fetal pig as well as a gladiolus to introduce botanical dissection. Dissections range from beginning to advanced and discuss the digestive, circulatory, reproductive, excretory, nervous, and respiratory systems. The book begins with an explanation and importance of dissection, points for successful dissection, and a list of tools commonly used in the process. A conversion table from English to metric measure is included for easy reference, since science tends to use metric as the universal system. Each dissection lesson includes background information about that animal, materials needed for the dissection, and black & white illustrations along with instructions for each step of the dissection. It also explains compass points of anatomy (anterior, posterior, etc.) which are found in all creatures and are used to help observe life. This 200+ page, paperback guide would be a terrific resource to accompany any biology curriculum.

Right- Brained Time, Money & Measurement is an engaging resource to teach practical skills to children from 5-8 years of age. Like the others in this series, the targeted learner is the visual or right brain although it may benefit children of all learning types. Concepts are taught through images, stories, hands-on activities, and patterns: all designed to engage and target a child’s natural learning strengths. Divided into 3 sections, one for each of the targeted skills, lessons begin with simple concepts and increase in difficulty. It is recommended you only go as far as your student is ready, depending on age and level. Part I, Time, covers everything from introducing the hands on a clock (Ollie Hour, Molly Minute, and Sammy Second), to future and elapsed time, and to estimating time. In Money, children are introduced to the different money denominations and end with adding money and making change. The final section, Measurement, focuses on measuring temperature, length, perimeter, area, weight, and volume. Resources for practicing the skills taught in the book and an answer key are included. Depending on your child, you may wish to add a clock, play money or measuring cups (not required). You will need a 12” ruler, measuring tape (or yard stick), kitchen scale, bathroom scale, and a food thermometer. The final section also includes cooking activities, so other common household and food items will be necessary. This is a wonderful resource to engage your child’s learning practical math skills.

For many of us, nature studies have extended beyond the exploratory lessons and have become an extension of our lives. Immersing ourselves in nature fills us with a greater appreciation for our created world-the perfect balance in which every living plant, organism and creature intertwines.

Designed for nature enthusiasts, this practical book provides month by month projects for the entire family. Each chapter begins with a region by region check list which corresponds to the USDA plant hardiness zone map (included for those of us who may be unsure of the zone in which we reside). Each month provides a wide range of projects and wildlife activities which allows you to pick and choose those that best fit your family. Instructions for projects are given clearly in a step by step format and many key steps are illustrated. A sampling of projects includes: building a bat box; making a mini-pond; building a simple toad sanctuary; building a butterfly hibernation box, plus many others. Abundant beneficial charts are included, for example: identifying bird eggs by nest position and color/dimensions of egg; identifying spider webs; and directories of wildlife plants/shrubs for gardens. The most exciting aspect of this activity-based book is that you do not have to have access to acres of land. Your own personal wildlife preserve is achievable whether you measure your yard in acres or feet. Nearly all the projects contained in this book are small scale and require only a few feet or yards of land. Beautifully illustrated, this book will please the discerning nature lover in all of us. 160 pgs, pb. ~Deanne

Learn about scale and proportion with this humorous, whimsical story. Set in the old frontier town of Cowlick, two barbers compete to drive each other out of town. The key to barber Louie's success has been surprising his clients with haircuts resembling various objects, all cut to scale. For example, Louie can sculpt large objects (such as a horse or a stagecoach) out of a person's hair because he knows how to measure and calculate proportionately. His rival, barber Buzzsaw, is skilled at the opposite type of haircuts that make smaller objects appear bigger. Can the barbers learn to work together? By Scott Sundby; illus by Wayne Geehan. 32 pgs, pb. ~ Lisa

While able to be used with any geometry program, it is designed specifically for use with Discovering Geometry and Jacob's Geometry. It's very easy to make just about anything in Sketchpad: you can simply highlight points and make circles about them, draw line, bisect line and angles, and measure them with only a click of the button. You can type on your sketch, name points, lines, and angles, plot graphs and prove proofs. You can also import and transform images. One of the coolest things (my brother got a kick out of this) is that you can even do limited animation! Very simple to use, and an excellent aid for any geometry student, I highly recommend getting into it. Please note that it is a downloadable application, not a CD-ROM, so you will need internet access to enter the code enclosed and download the program. System requirements: Windows XP or later, Mac OS 10.4 or later (PowerPC-based system) 300 MB free disk space, internet access. ~ Mark
