Maybe Dave Marks can't grade all our Writing Strands assignments, but his book will help. Common writing problems and how to fix them are discussed. The bulk of the book is devoted to reviewing assignments actually written by students, with commentary about the writing and what steps the teacher should take. How to correct problems like repeating words, "Dick and Jane" writing, ambiguity, tense errors, sentence fragments and run-ons, and a wide variety of other writing weaknesses are addressed. The book first shows a rough draft a student has written and then includes remarks the parent or teacher has made. Both the draft and the remarks are commented on so parents can see how best to evaluate all different types of writing. The book recommends that comments made on student writing be straightforward and to the point. Evaluation is provided for using Writing Strands 2 - 5 for grades 2 - 8, although this book could be used as a teacher resource regardless of the curriculum used. Subtitled "Strategies to Build Writing Skills and Confidence", this book will do just that! Fun writing activities with minimal instruction are designed to provide supplementary creative writing practice, making this a "home-run" for many students, parents, and teachers. The 50 page-length activities utilize familiar topics, and include various steps focused on developing creativity. Here is an example from one of the writing activities called "The Shadow Page". First step: "You wouldn't find a shadow in a completely dark room. Why?" The second step: "Write a Story about a dog that is afraid of its own shadow." The third step contains a picture of a shadow and states, "Here are three hand shadows someone has made on the walls. What do you think they could be?" The final step directs students to "write the first letter of your first name in the box and shadow it. Then use that letter as the beginning of the first word in a sentence that tells something about yourself."

Single lines are included for writing responses, although notebook paper could be utilized if additional space is needed. Reproducible for the purchaser (one copy /per student/per year), this would make an engaging fun Friday activity to build a student's confidence and ingenuity. and each writing activity contains a teacher page with additional comments, suggested responses (no right or wrong answers here!), and an artistic extension activity. 109 pgs, pb. ~ Deanne

Preparing a quality research paper requires the "marriage" of both reading and organizational skills. Written as an at-home companion for students, this guide maintains that the best way to improve a student's writing is to strengthen these skills. Breaking the actual task of research writing down into manageable chunks, coverage is thorough and readable (short sections with bullet points) and written directly to the student with a touch of humor and a solid dose of reality. From preparing a workable time schedule to library and internet research to endnotes and parenthetical notes to the nitty-gritty of reworking your paper, the bases are all covered; and then, just for good measure, how to adapt these skills to oral presentations and essay tests. The author (study skills "guru," Roy Fry) has a strong appreciation of the value of internet research and computer skills in general along with good suggestions for mastering them. A quick chapter at the close of the book addresses the special challenges that students with ADD face as they tackle research writing along with some practical tips and suggestions. 130 pgs, pb. ~ Janice

The New Answers Book has been very popular for Christians who want to find quick, detailed, scientifically and biblically accurate answers to common questions about Creationism and Intelligent Design. This second book follows in its steps, answering 30 more questions dealing with Creation/Evolution and the Bible. These questions seem a bit more complex and culturally focused than those in the first book. Using Genesis and science as a basis, the book answers questions ranging from the origin of evil, if evolution fits with the Bible, how a Christian should respond to gay marriage, and if Creationists can believe in physics like relativity, quantum mechanics, and string theory. The book does a good job of showing how the "evolutionizing" of our culture is not just affecting science – it's affecting most aspects of our society. With 30 common questions answered in a concise, intelligent way by various experts in the Creationism field, this book covers an impressive variety of subjects linked to evolution. Edited by Ken Ham, 374 pgs, pb. ~ Rachel

This is a journal made specifically for journal writing. The book itself is ready to be written in, with the top 1/3 of every page blank and the bottom 2/3 of the pages lined. The inside front cover has a list of frequently misspelled words and the inside back cover is a place for students to create their own word list. Although a teaching guide was available at one time, at this time, only the student journal is available. The overall idea is to get students journaling as an aid in developing their literacy skills. ~ Zach

Every homeschooling parent has their own planning/organizing style and there are plenty of plan books out there to prove it! This spiral-bound plan book appears to cater to those that have two basic wants: 1) “I need plenty of space to record multiple assignments for multiple classes every day” and 2) “I don’t want any “extras” on the page – just the above referenced space, please.” Each pair of facing pages represents one week, 40 weeks in all, with the days written in the first column down the left-hand side, a notes/reminders column immediately to the right, and the rest of the pages devoted to recording assignments. 16 columns are provided for recording subject assignments, each with room at the top to write the subject name and time (if you are that organized!), and 6 spaces allotted for writing different assignments within that subject for each day of the week. You may find yourself using two columns for each subject since they only measure about an inch long, (the sample page at the front does the same) but even so there is room for eight subjects. Pages are simple with green text and outlines on white, and just slightly “cute” with a pencil border and curly text to match the cute critters on the front cover. The first ten pages of this planner are devoted to holding student information, substitute information, a conference schedule, a seating chart, student transportation information, birthdays, medical information, a daily schedule chart, and a yearly planning list, all of which make this planner ideal for teaching an entire class in a classroom setting, but can easily be removed or overlooked by the parent schooling at home who may not find them useful. It's a puzzle book for two! Some activities are cooperative, others are competitive and they are all FUN! I've never seen a book that is actually designed for two people to use at the same time. It's very clever really. Some games have you sitting side by side, others have you facing each other with a page up between like a screen, so you can't see the other person's page. Sometimes you take turns in the book; other times you write simultaneously. There are mazes where you each start at your end and work towards the middle & the dot game where you make a square and put your initial in it. Some pages have you taking turns drawing a picture where you say "tag!" and trade off. There are games like hangman, and something like a MadLib and even a Battleship take-off. Some are just coloring pages and making a mandala together. This is great for siblings who like to work together (or maybe even those who don't!). In a classroom, this would be fun pair work. It certainly requires kids to communicate effectively. Author Lydia Crook is a UK-based artist and paper engineer. 112 black & white pages ~ Sara
