For years, teachers and aspiring writers have asked Lee Roddy (author of "Grizzly Adams," countless short stories, and over 50 novels) to compile a guide from his 20 years of convention seminars. This is that much-anticipated guide. Whether adults use this book to instruct young students or utilize the guidelines to write a best-selling short story or novel of their own, the practical system for writing laid out in this guide will be beneficial. This is not a workbook, and it's not very fancy either, but it lays out a straightforward approach to writing which has been proven to work for the author and many others. It's filled with tips, outlines, suggestions, and rules for writing techniques that will get students to write proper stories and enjoy it as well. The guide begins with a helpful introduction that tells teachers how to use the book and then contains eight lessons on ideas, story building, objectives, obstacles, outcome, characters, plots, and scenes. Goals and the importance of these eight story aspects, outlines, ideas for writing, examples, and so much more are included in each lesson. The end of each lesson also includes a few short-answer questions and a simple writing assignment that will help them use what they have just learned in their own writing. An encouraging conclusion is also included in the guide, with the author giving final tips for making sure your writing is strong and successful. A handy guide presenting a solid method for writing fictional stories. 88 pgs.

Subtitled, Celebrating Great Women of the Bible, this is a Bible story book with a unique focus: encouraging brave living. Each Bible story shows how God uses ordinary girls to do amazing things for Him just by following His lead! To relay the stories, you are introduced to a diverse group of five girls: Hope, Glory, Honor, Gracie, and Faith, who form a youth group called Brave Girls. They work together to know God more and honor Him by telling others about Him. Each girl tells a different Bible story (18 stories from the Old Testament and 13 from the New), connects it a bit with her own life, and then ends each with a brief devotion-like summary and a one-sentence prayer. The predominant focus is the Bible story, but full-color, water-color type illustrations fill the accompanying page. Note an interesting layout choice: occasionally, you must turn the book to read a few stories that are set in landscape mode. An additional section adds a brief quiz to see which brave girl you are most like. This seems a bit of a fluffy touch, but I think the goal is to help girls identify the talents with which they can glorify God. The ending contains a 5-page collection of “Brave” verses that serve for Scripture memory, and a letter from the Brave Girls. While sharing crucial Bible truths, I think this devotional might also encourage girls to live in faith and fellowship. 7/25” x 9.25”, 208 pp, hc. ~ Ruth

Children delight in well told stories and song. This charming book seeks to engage young minds in the beloved people and accounts of Scripture. Each succinct story is presented in a 2-page spread that contains a colorful illustration, reduced image of the coloring page, a fun fact, and the introductory lines to the complementary song. Two accompanying CD-ROMS incorporate children singing along with well-done musical accompaniments and printable coloring pages. The publisher identifies the coloring pages and songs by disc and location on the CD-ROM, making this format very user friendly. Complete lyrics to songs are available through the publisher's website. Songs vary from the singing of just the chorus to most stanzas. A delightful method to teach young children the most important thing they'll ever learn: God's faithfulness! 206 pgs, padded hc. ~ Deanne

Growing up, if I was given historical fiction presented in clear language for my age level, I was hooked in a matter of minutes. KidVentures presents four Bible stories in this same manner. Trouble Times Ten features an Israelite boy named Ben who is afraid of water. When Moses tells his family that they need to cross the Red Sea to freedom, will he be able to trust God or will he be left behind? Ruled Out tells the story of Ethan who lives with the people who made it out of Egypt. Moses has been up on Mount Sinai for a while, and the people are starting to change, which scares Ethan. Galen and Goliath tells the story of Galen, a young Philistine who is told to kill a young boy to prove his bravery and loyalty. Trouble comes when Galen must decide if he wants to honor the giant Goliath or the God of the Israelites. The Prophet's Kid tells the story of Ezra, who just wants to have fun. He goes to a meeting he isn't allowed to attend, which lands him in a heap of trouble that even causes someone's life to be at risk!

All these stories are bound into a 313-page softcover book that includes a parent/teacher guide filled with discussion questions, background information, and learning activities. Great for Bible studies or recreational reading. – Laura

This cute book by Andrew Clements is about two friends, Natalie and Zoe, who are in sixth grade. Natalie writes a short novel about things that happen at school, and Zoe is sure it is good enough to be published. Natalie's mom happens to be a publisher, who has told Natalie that she is looking for stories about kids in school. The girls don't want her to know the book was written by Natalie, so they use a pen name. Zoe acts as Natalie's agent, and with the help of a teacher they set up an "office" and correspond with Natalie's mom through voice mail and official-looking papers. Natalie is nervous that her mom won't enjoy the book, but Zoe is sure there is nothing to worry about. This is a fun story about friendship and kids believing in themselves. 196 pgs, pb.

Capturing all the major Old and New Testament stories (over 200), this Bible story book is designed for older elementary children who are ready to read on their own but still have a great appreciation for informative illustrations. Stories are presented chronologically with scripture references. The colorful illustrations are beautiful, frankly, with realistic detail. Each page is typically one story but sometimes related stories are presented across two-page spreads. Numerous sidebar articles provide maps as well as background, archaeological, or just plain interesting “tidbits.” For example, on the two pages that tell the Samson story, each page has one story (Strong enough to kill a lion based on Judges 13-14 and Samson falls in love based on Judges 16). These are carefully told to reflect the truth of the story without being unnecessarily graphic. There is a lovely illustration covering about one-fourth of the two pages that shows Samson with the lion. There are also three side-bar articles - lions (in Canaan), honey bees (their value to Israelites), and what being a Nazirite meant.

The book starts with a brief introduction to the Bible and ends with ten pages of Bible references (Daily Life in OT/NT, Plants/Animals, The Holy Land and Other Bible Lands) plus four pages of quizzes (Who’s Who in the Bible? and Test your Knowledge).

Used by New Leaf Press as the spine for their Elementary Bible and English Grammar course, this is a well-done book that would be a lovely addition to any homeschool. 256 pgs, hb. ~ Janice

Story blocks are all the rage and a fun way to get kids creating clever tales. Roll the blocks and come up with ideas for settings, characters, and actions that can become a writing prompt, a game of charades, or a funny bedtime story.  These 20 blocks (1.25”) are color-coded with an image on each side; a red background is for people or animals, blue for things, orange for places, yellow for descriptions or emotions, green for actions, and purple for relationships. But this not just a set of blocks! A very amusing little book is included (5.25x5.25”, 143pp) and it gives you some ideas on how to use the blocks. The book goes over how to do an introduction, create a conflict, show motivation, write dialogue, and develop characters, organize a plot, and overall theme. It is not a course, but a fun way to get those creative juices flowing!

I Heard Good News Today: Stories for Children shares stories beginning with Mary Magdalene, the first to see Jesus after his death; Philip, Peter, Cornelius, and Paul – missionaries in the Bible; and then retells stories of early missionaries and missionaries to many different countries up through the 20th century. You will read about some more famous missionaries like Ann & Adoniram Judson, Mary & David Livingstone, and St. Patrick. You will also read the stories of lesser known people, but their stories are just as dynamic. This book is 140 pages of good reading.

Bring Bible stories to life by cartooning through them, honing drawing skills while you illustrate what you read. This fun little book contains eighteen Bible stories, from both the Old and New Testaments. You'll start with Adam and Eve and end with the Resurrection. Each chapter begins with a "big idea" then starts into a retelling of the story. There are pauses in the story where the child is asked to draw a person, add to an existing drawing, or sketch some scenery. For example, in The Exodus, readers begin by following a step-by-step sequence to draw both Pharaoh and Moses. The story begins, and then there is a scene illustrated from Pharaoh's throne room, and the reader is asked to add some snakes to the ground. Then we read about the plagues, the wandering in the wilderness, and then the reader finishes the story by drawing a scene of Moses parting the Red Sea. Because the drawings are very cartoon-like, they can be sketched quickly as you read through the chapter. It's a nice way to keep active kids engaged during Bible time without spending time drawing an elaborate scene for each story. The book is in small, horizontal format, and you will likely be drawing right in the book, so you may need a couple of copies if using with several children. ~Sara

These short stories all have a little bit of humor and irony from them, often with a twist at the end that you weren't expecting. There is the story about a woman who makes a sacrifice to buy a Christmas present for her husband, who surprises her with a gift she's always wanted, but can't use. Another story tells of a homeless man wandering the street, trying to be arrested so he may be sent to jail and have shelter for the winter. When he finally decides to turn his life around, will he have a chance? The characters are diverse, such as a hypocritical cosmopolite who asserts that he is much too worldly to have an attachment to anywhere on the planet, yet when somebody cuts down his hometown, he creates a scuffle. There is also a story from a dog's perspective about how he has grown tired of the name "Lovey," and being coddled and confined to a small apartment with a large lady who tries to pass time all day. At the end, he is overjoyed when a man takes him away and names him "Pete." Each of the stories are fast reads because they are not overblown in detail or lengthy description. Each episode shares some ideas about life and offers some thoughtful messages. A Wordsworth Classic.

Looking for a more unique story Bible that the whole family will grow from? Check out Shine On, which emphasizes the theme of light throughout the Bible. More like a retelling, stories maintain the original biblical style and include a range of biblical material (law, poetry, stories, etc.) distributed fairly evenly between the Old and New Testaments. I particularly like that full chapters of poetry (such as from Psalms or Isaiah) are included. This collection relates biblical material not often included in story Bibles (the “Faith” chapter, Hebrews 11, for example). These stories are designed for the whole family to enjoy together. For each story, reinforcement activities are provided through Explore, Connect and Wonder (wonder why; wonder how it would feel, etc.) sections (1 per story). Stories are told on a 2-page spread: full-color illustration filling most of one page and the read-aloud on the other. In addition, photographs and illustrations are added in the margins when helpful to the story. Another unique characteristic is the inclusion of a wide variety of illustrators (listed in the back), so styles range from rather cartoon like to more stylized and abstract. Includes a presentation page. 8” x 10”,320 pp, hc. ~ Ruth

Meet George Catlin, a genre artist from the 1800s, who journeyed west to paint the Plains Indians and their way of life. With a goal to record history by painting the appearance and customs of America's native people, we are forever indebted to him for providing us a visual record of a different time and its peoples. Containing authentic illustrations, basic art techniques, coloring pages and historically accurate text, Sharon Jeffus (Visual Manna) has given us a fun, hands-on resource that ties art and history together to engage even our most reluctant learners. sc, 28 pgs. As parents, we have the tremendous opportunity to share God’s truth and the Gospel with our children! The subtitle for this devotional is Ten-Minute Devotions to Draw Your Family to God. These 78 weeks (a year and a half’s worth!) of in-depth, yet straight forward devotionals require a minimum each day. Organized by week, you’ll find units of 5 daily devotions: days 1-4 chronologically study the Bible. The books focus on key biblical elements that connect the whole message of the Gospel in a concise and manageable way. Day 5 diverges from this pattern to study related writings from the Psalms or prophets. Each weekly unit opens with an object lesson or themed questions. The simple items used for this lesson are listed at the beginning. Day one begins with Picture It, to help introduce the family to the week’s theme. Each day, read the passage from your own Bible, and then Think about It (a brief read-aloud passage to help understand the passage), Talk about It (three group questions with brief answers) and Pray About It (unscripted suggestions for prayer). As you progress through the week, you will be asked to remember previous days’ readings and also to apply them to your lives.

I so appreciate the succinct treasure this is: theologically rich, yet comprehensible; simple, yet doctrinally sound. Another unique feature is that occasionally children are cued to ask the parents questions. The approach here is that we are all on a spiritual journey to becoming more like Christ (rather than “the parents know it all”). Long Story Short focuses on the Old Testament and highlights key individuals and events from creation through Nehemiah. This book was a 2012 ECPA Christian book award finalist.

Includes brief instructions for how to use the devotionals with preschool, grade school and older students. Use these excellent devotions to start your homeschool day or study as a family in the evening. By the same author as Gospel Story Bible (#062680). 7.5” x 10.5”, 418 pp, sc. ~ Ruth

At first glance you might not expect a collection of short stories to be a cultural statement but look again! As the editor of this compilation explains "the change (in American short stories since the early nineteenth century) has been gradual from a literature that assumed a singular general, homogenous audience educated in the classics, the Christian Bible, even (possibly) in Latin and Greek, to numerous particularized audiences that may have very little in common except the English language." She further notes that the rise of the internet, online blogging, and online publication of writing has added a sort of chaos to the American literary scene. So, this collection of short stories represents both the historical short story icons but also selections from young and emerging writers and, additionally, some "retrievals" from past writers that weren't previously included. Arranged chronologically in terms of publication date, reading through these stories will provide a glimpse into the intricacies of our diverse American culture. Be aware, though, that some authors/stories might push you out of your comfort zone. 870 pgs, pb. ~ Janice
