Reading good literature opens wide the windows of the world to students. A body of materials which will link the student with the general experience of mankind is provided in this book. This collection of titles is divided into ten units presenting experiences common to people in all times and societies. Certain works have been selected to provide as wide a scope as possible and while something will interest each reader, all of the titles in this collection will not be suitable for all students. Books such as Pride and Prejudice, Little Women, The Chalk Garden, The House of Mirth, On Golden Pond, The Chocolate War, 2001: Space Odyssey, The Great Gatsby, Great Expectations, and Ivanhoe represent the quality books from all spectrums that this book features. The book includes a reading level identification for and a short description of all 150 featured books and then provides tests for each book. Each test in this volume contains three types of questions. A set of objective questions will measure the student's understanding of the reading content., such as the basics of plot and setting. Five short-answer questions require more inferential responses about the larger ideas that the author wishes the reader to grasp. A final challenge essay asks the student to express observations on what has been read and to support those observations with information gained from the book, other books, and life. 100 More Great Books is constructed in the same format and contains seven units grouped in types of books: Adventure and Survival, The Maturing Self, History in Fiction, Science Fiction, Fantasy, and the Supernatural, Social Issues and Moral Challenge, Success and Achievement and Reflections of the Family. It recommends classics such as Pilgrims Progress, Jacob Have I Loved, Across Five Aprils, A Wrinkle in Time, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, Anna and the King of Siam, Tess of the D'Urbervilles and many more. - Rachel S.

First published in 1906, this classic set in the Middle Ages tells the story of a monk, Brother Stephen, and his young color grinder, Gabriel. In the days before printing presses were common, monks would create books by hand, which were works of art in themselves. Brother Stephen and Gabriel work together to make a beautiful "hour book" as a wedding gift from King Louis of France to Lady Anne of Brittany. This story provides great insight into the bookmaking process and is enhanced with black and white period illustrations. By Evaleen Stein. 87 pgs, pb. ~ Lisa

This unique study/devotional book does a fine job of covering much of the Bible; it is packed full of 108 family-oriented Bible lessons from Genesis to Revelation. The author makes so much of the Bible accessible to even your young ones. The Old Testament section includes much of Genesis and Exodus and most familiar stories, as well as lessons on the kings and prophets. Most of the New Testament lessons are taken from the Gospels and Acts, but each other book
is given one chapter. Begin each lesson with the provided questions to arouse interest and introduce the lesson theme. The retelling of a Biblical story follows.
Choose to read the included Biblical story or the corresponding passage in your own Bible. The next section, entitled Things to Think About, provides open-ended questions for discussion. The devotional ends with Things to Pray About, which offers unscripted prayer suggestions. Each lesson concludes with Things to Do, an activity suggestion section. Here you will find general directions for varied activity options (crafts, serving, worship, etc.). In some cases, activities are geared to particular age groups and are identified as such. Many of the craft-type activities appeared to be more elementary-aged focused: make a people collage, make an advent chain, etc. However, since these activities are
explained in general terms, you can easily tailor the activity to your own child's level. Many of these activities require supplies you would normally have around a home-school house. There are some activities that require supplies, such as
"chalk talk" and flannel board suggestions, but these are optional. There are also unique suggestions that would be appropriate for a variety of ages such as singing and dancing to praise songs or thinking of a friend and planning a time to tell him about Jesus. This book would work as a more in-depth family devotional or as a Bible curriculum in the elementary years (no tests included). 595 pp, sc. ~ Ruth

Here's the junior version containing the same concise, organized, and helpful advice as the original Painless books, just geared toward a younger grade level. It will show kids that grammar doesn't have to be painful or scary, and can even be fun! The theme of the book is a pretend amusement park called Grammar World, where different animals introduce the reader to different aspects of grammar. There are five main chapters covering sentences, nouns, pronouns and adjectives, verbs and adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, interjections, and mechanics. Information is presented in a clear, organized way that is easy for students to follow. Plenty of "Let's Try It" sections provide quizzes to practice concepts just learned, "Trick to Remember" sections highlight important hints to keep in mind, "Treasure Hunt" areas prompt students to find examples of certain topics, "Careful" sections warn students of possible problems, "Treasure Chest" sections give examples of certain topics, "Wrapping It Up" gives a summary of key ideas, and "Hitting the Target" provides practice with the chapter's ideas. Two-colored illustrations add some fun to the learning. The guide is written directly to students so they can learn and practice the concepts independently. Answers to the practice sections are included in the back of the book. 158 pgs, pb. ~ Rachel

If you're looking for a Bible overview that is concise and gets right to the main points, check this one out. Each book is described in 2 to 4 pages, with major sections for Title and Style, GPS, Background and Detail. Title and Style gives an overview of the book, writer, and major points covered. GPS and Background provides information on the geographical, cultural, biographical, and historical references. The Detail section explains a few particulars from each book.

I found the text to be concise and well written, with interesting information that I had not heard before. For instance, in Matthew, the author Cris Rogers gives insights into the life of Herod the Great, both about his character and his accomplishments. One of the building projects was a man-made mountain, constructed for the sole purpose of putting a lavish palace called Herodium on it. Rogers makes the point about Jesus' statement in Matthew 21:21 "say to this mountain, 'Go, throw yourself into the sea,'" Jesus may have been referring to this mountain and the power His disciples would have to bring down the evils of this world and throw them into the pits of hell.

The book also includes lots of color photographs and small maps that add interest and explain some of the text. At the end of the commentary on each book, additional books are suggested if you want to delve more deeply into the topics discussed.

I believe it would be well worth the few minutes of time that it takes to read the section on a book of the Bible before doing Bible reading for your own personal Bible study. It would also give you some great insights to wow your students if you are leading a study. 204 pgs, sc. ~ Bob

The New Answers Book has been very popular for Christians who want to find quick, detailed, scientifically and biblically accurate answers to common questions about Creationism and Intelligent Design. This second book follows in its steps, answering 30 more questions dealing with Creation/Evolution and the Bible. These questions seem a bit more complex and culturally focused than those in the first book. Using Genesis and science as a basis, the book answers questions ranging from the origin of evil, if evolution fits with the Bible, how a Christian should respond to gay marriage, and if Creationists can believe in physics like relativity, quantum mechanics, and string theory. The book does a good job of showing how the "evolutionizing" of our culture is not just affecting science – it's affecting most aspects of our society. With 30 common questions answered in a concise, intelligent way by various experts in the Creationism field, this book covers an impressive variety of subjects linked to evolution.
