Did you know that Mark Twain wrote a major work on Joan of Arc? I didn't either! However, Mark Twain himself stated, "I like Joan of Arc best of all my books; and it is the best…" He spent twelve years researching detailed accounts written by both the French and the English, and two years writing. This story is amazingly told (remember, it is written by one of the best storytellers of all time!), as Twain ingeniously has a fictional man by the name of Alden, translating a fictional memoir by the narrator and Joan's long time friend, de Conte. This is an extraordinary book about an infamous woman, written by a literary phenomenon. Pb, 452 pgs. – elise

Some students are natural story tellers; their creative-writing juices flow freely. Then you have some kids who need a small nudge, or an idea to work with, and then they open up; yet others draw a total blank if you tell them to write an original story. This book is a tool for parents and teachers to guide all types of young writers in drawing out an original tale from them. This book contains 48 prompts for writing stories & essays, but these are more than your typical sentence or two. Your student is given a starter paragraph, a setting or situation, followed by a series of questions that lead to sentences that lead to paragraphs. Idea prompts are there too, like asking you to draw a picture of a scene. Then you are asked to get more specific with directives like why questions and asking you to write a dialogue. Editing tips help you refine your writing, and a literary and screen tie-in are suggested that goes along with the theme. What an interesting tie-in! These introduce students to other writings/films containing similar ideas as their prompts, teach them to observe literary characteristics, and highlight other interesting elements in stories. Here is an example for you called "Waiting Room." To start: Not much happens in the bus station in this small town in Iowa. Both the place and the people waiting for their buses to arrive or depart appear unremarkable. It's a sleepy place where nothing ever seems to happen. Questions: How does the room smell? What color is the floor? Describe the calendar on the wall. How comfortable are the chairs? How well-lit is the room? One woman is reading in an unusual manner. What is she reading and how is she doing it? Etc. Short & Sweet: Write a description of this place in one long sentence. Try using dashes or a semi-colon to extend the sentence. Starting Up: Write three 90-word first-person action stories that start in this boring place. Here are 7 possible beginnings: 1. The woman who is reading starts tearing up her book. 2. A mime enters the room and starts performing. Etc. Write Away: Pick the opening you like best & develop it into a longer story. Try to capture the irony of this unlikely place as the setting for such an outlandish story. Make sure the setting is important, you have involved minor characters, and picked the right narrator, etc. Read to Write: Consider reading "On the Late Bus" by Susan Enberg. Notice how a seemingly inconsequential conversation between passengers prompts a troubled girl to reconsider her life. On the Screen: Check out the academy award winning comedy "It Happened One Night" starring Claudette Colbert & Clark Gable. Enjoy the comic contrast of the glamorous socialite against the unglamorous world of bus travel in the 1930s. The end of the book contains fifty more one-line writing prompts, and some student samples with comments. A diverse collection of well-thought-out prompts that encourages students to develop their writing ability while practicing the "Seven C's of good writing:" clear, composed, correct, concise, convincing, compelling, and clever. I devoured all of Joan Aiken's books when I was younger, and this one was no exception. I loved the story about Bonnie and her cousin Sylvia, who overcame depressing and odd events with cooperation, cheerfulness, and faith. The story begins in the deep of winter, with Bonnie expectantly awaiting the arrival of her cousin Sylvia. Although the troublesome wolves of that region cause some trouble with the train, Sylvia arrives and Bonnie, who is aching for a friend, is sure they will have a wonderful time. Unfortunately, soon their guardian and school teacher Miss Slighcarp, a distant "cousin" arrives as well to watch over them and the household while their parents leave on a cruise to improve Bonnie's mother's health. Miss Slighcarp hardly waits until the parents are gone to wreak havoc on the household, send the "spoiled brats" away, and try and discover how to get her hands on Bonnie's father's fortune. The cousins must go to great lengths to restore Bonnie's house and to find their father's lawyer, in a distant city, to help them. - Jess

This colorful workbook offers many pages of pre-writing practice disguised as fun follow-the-path and tracing activities. The first twenty pages are brightly colored pictures with paths for kids to trace as they help the frog jump across the lily pads, the plane land on the runway, and other similar concepts. The paths get increasingly difficult, calling for more and more control and concentration. The next several pages move on to tracing shapes (appearing on inviting coloring pages) and then specific strokes. Two full pages of bright stickers provide further fun and motivation for young students. 32 pgs, perforated for easy removal. – Melissa
