Even the most creative writer appreciates a good writing prompt! This book writes like a journal. It’s not a fussy one with lots of curlicues and color, no, this one has white pages with simple black type and lines. The topics are current such as: what’s your favorite viral video? And what do you like about it? There is only space for a paragraph on that one. A longer prompt, where you are given a page to write would be: you catch a stranger stealing from your school. What do you do? What if it’s actually your friend who is stealing? Other topics include homework, music, and your perfect day. There are hundreds of prompts here. This would appeal to boys or girls, in both the topics and appearance of the book. 7x9”, sc. ~Sara

How many times have you, as a mother, become frustrated and stressed by what you think you should accomplish on any given day? Society tells moms that they should be ‘super moms’ and be able to do it all. This book debunks that myth and others.

There are many myths about motherhood, and this book focuses on ten of them: Mothering is natural, easy, and instinctive; The way I mother is the right and only way; I am just a mom; Motherhood is all-consuming and all-fulfilling; A good mother can do it all, all at once; Motherhood is a rat race; Motherhood is the luck of the draw; Everything depends on me; I have to do it all right, or my child will turn out wrong; My child’s bad choice means I’m a bad mom. This 217-page, softcover book is written by two moms, Karen Ehman and Ruth Schwenk, who realized the myths of motherhood were just that, and wanted to encourage and help other mothers. They use their experience and the Bible to equip mothers to embrace relationships instead of stressing over the other ‘stuff’ of life.

You don’t have to be a ‘super mom’ to be a ‘great mom.’ Learn the truth from the Bible about being a mother, and stop believing the lies and myths. Your children will be grown all too soon, so enjoy guiding and nurturing them now on the journey you are taking together. ~ Donna

This is a reference book with a twist--from page to page, topics are connected. First you see a satellite image of the earth; on that earth there is small boxed area. On the next page you see that the boxed area was the ocean and the two-page spread has information about elements of the ocean. Or you may see a two-page spread of hot air balloons with the flags of different countries on them. Turn the page to see information about the UN, and the hot air balloons are seen floating outside the window. Turn the page again to see the close-up of a background picture concerning religions in other countries. It's like looking for hidden things in the pictures as a clue for what will follow. I continue to go back to the pages to find the links between them. This 250-page hardcover book covers topics from science and history/geography – nature, human body, earth, people and places, art and culture, history, science and technology, and space. A glossary in the back of the book will help with new or unfamiliar words. Each two-page spread is a large photo surrounded by small photos, illustrations, and bits of information. This book offers more than just reference material as you zoom in and out of the scenes – your children will be encouraged to read and learn with this interactive format. ~ Donna

Possibly the most unique aspect of this game is that it's "as much fun to lose as to win" with losers staying in the game, trying to get other players out! Game play revolves around a deck of cards, which players collect or use to complete different challenges, from building a barn out of their cards, to collecting a run, to doing a stadium wave around the table as they play. The first person to complete a challenge grabs a puck from the center of the table, and everyone follows suit. As you might guess, you use one fewer puck than the total number of players, so there's always a player that doesn't get a puck. That player starts spelling "D-O-N-K-E-Y" on their scorecard, and when the word is spelled, becomes a "donkey" or a player that stays in the game, but can't win it. Players that are still in the game can't talk to the donkeys, so donkeys egg them on to turn them into donkeys too! Includes two decks of cards, 7 Donkey pucks, score sheets and instructions. – Jess

The amazing story of Louis Braille and his untiring determination to enable the blind to read and write. Blinded in a freak accident, Louis had an intelligent and curious mind. Though his memory was tremendous and learning came easily to him, he was frustrated by not being able to read or write. At ten, he was enrolled at the Royal Institute of the Blind. He did well there, but was still discouraged by the cumbersome system of reading via embossed letters. This story tells how it came to pass that Louis, by the tender age of fifteen (!), had invented the first workable form of Braille. Though his system would not be perfected until five years later, this young man's invention would effectively open up the world for the blind. A very readable biography.

You must see it to believe it! Lively graphics, astounding facts, and incredible statistics come together in this visually appealing book that covers hundreds of comparisons. Did you know that the largest hailstone was found in South Dakota and was three times the width of a tennis ball? Or that it is estimated that there may be 100,000 miles of blood vessels in a human body: enough to circle the world four times? This is just a sampling of the fascinating details your children will learn. Comparisons cover a range of foundational science concepts including space, earth science, weather, human biology, zoology, computers and engineering. Excellent resource to set out on a coffee table to encourage free time reading or reluctant readers. If you've been wondering what to use for grammar alongside your IEW material, the problem is solved. Fix Its are passages from well-loved books – 132 per book to be precise. Working on 1 passage per day, students look for and correct embedded grammar errors and learn a new vocabulary word. As added reinforcement for the IEW methodology, students are also expected to identify Dress-Ups and Sentence Openers (part of the IEW writing style instruction). By using stories, students are exposed to great classic literature and become eager to read the originals. Because there is a continuing story line, the daily grammar edits become fun and entertaining as well as challenging. The 132-passage sets (a year's worth; 33 wks of 4 per week) come from 5 different stories each with a recommended grade level: Tom Sawyer (grades 3-6), Frog Prince, or Just Desserts (grades 4-8), The Little Mermaid (grades 6-9), The King and the Discommodious Pea (grades 7-10), and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight (grades 9-12). Accordingly, this one book provides daily grammar edits for five years or for multi-age students. Each series of passages starts out with an introduction to both the grammatical content and the story as well as providing background information on the story and its author. Each student will need a dictionary. It's also assumed that the student and teacher will be familiar with either the Teaching Writing Structure & Style or the Student Writing Intensive seminars from IEW. However, the Fix It edits can be done as a stand-alone program. The Fix It manual is intended as a teacher resource. The passages to be edited are presented in parallel columns with the corrected version. These can be presented to students on a blackboard/whiteboard or as an overhead for a classroom situation or worked on paper for individual students. Student worksheets with the uncorrected sentences are available in e-book format on the IEW website (all access information is included in the Fix-It manual). The manual's appendix is extensive and includes IEW writing style techniques (Dress-Ups, Sentence Openers, and Advanced Style), reference guide for Grammar & Mechanics and Abbreviations, Proofreading Symbols, Samples of Student Work and In Class Teacher Corrections, and an Index. ~ Janice

Puberty can often be an awkward, or even difficult time for girls. With so many changes happening all at once, it can be downright overwhelming. This book helps girls cope with their changing bodies by helping them to understand what to expect, and by offering practical tips for handling the challenges of physical development with grace and poise.

The ten chapters in this 192-page book address topics such as changing body shapes, breast development, hair care basics, nail care tips for hands and feet, skin care issues like acne, surviving menstruation, getting enough sleep, getting and staying physically fit, healthy eating, and dealing with new experiences such as a first crush or peer pressure.

I really liked how interactive this book is. Throughout the book there are designated areas for girls to jot quick thoughts about what they are reading and how it relates to them. Also, there are frequent personal inventory type quizzes to help girls determine if they're on the right track, or to identify areas needing improvement. Other fun features include "advice column" type question and answer sections, a simple, daily workout routine, and a number of recipes for homemade skin care and beauty products such as Fresh Squeezed Lemon Hair Rinse, Rainbow Twirl Lip Gloss, and Candy Apple Shower Gel.

I also appreciated how this book emphasizes scripture and godly principles, and helps girls to respond to their changing bodies and the pressures of adolescence in a way that is honoring to God. By applying the wisdom in this book, girls can grow spiritually as they grow physically.

While the text of the book speaks directly to the teen girl (and is thus sensitive to her need for added privacy during these years of development,) Christian Girl's Guide does an excellent job of providing teen-initiated discussion with Mom, and never undermines parental authority. Read the book first, if you like, and then give it to your daughter to work through on her own, trusting that she will come to you with questions and concerns about the changes that lie ahead. This encouraging book is perfect for any girl in the process of growing up and growing into a godly woman. ~ Rachel P.

You better have nimble fingers and a quick, calculating mind if you hope to win this rambunctious math card game! The deck is composed of 73 cards, each of which has a large yellow number (ranging from 1-10) on the center, and a 1, 2, or 3 in the corner. The cards are shuffled, the top card is turned over in the center of the table and the rest of the cards are dealt evenly into each player's draw pile. Players must draw one card at a time into their hand and play them on the center pile as quickly as they can. There is no limit to how many cards they can hold in their hand, but they must draw them individually. If the card in the middle is a '6' with a 2 in the corners, players may play either a '4' or an '8'. If addition or subtraction results in a number greater or less than ten, ten can be added or subtracted to the number to put it back in the 1-10 range [e.g. if it is a '9' with a 3, 9 + 3 = 12, 12 - 10 = 2 so a two could be played, or a 6 (9 3 = 6)]. The first player to run out of cards is the winner. So put away that calculator (you won't have time to use it!) and get that brain racing for the win! 2-4 players, game time is about 5-10 minutes. Cards are stored in a handy travel case. ~ Megan

There are twelve treasure pieces hidden within Monkey Beach Isle. Can a matey like ye use yer tactile powers to help the pirate monkeys find their booty? The game starts with all of the treasures dropped into the fabric island through the volcano opening. Each turn, a player flips over a green tile and a blue tile. The blue tile will be a piece of loot to find. The green tile will be a location to get it out of – or it might be a volcano tile if you're unlucky! Once four volcano tiles are found, the volcano erupts and it's game over. However, if the tile is not a volcano, it will reference one of three openings in the island: a beach opening, a waterfall opening, or a jungle opening. Once a player has determined the treasure and location to get it out of, they will feel for the treasure through the fabric. When they think they have found it, they will push it towards the correct opening. The player gets to keep the treasure if they were right. But if they were wrong, the isle re-claims the treasure. The game ends when all the treasure has been found or the volcano erupts. Whoever has the most treasure by game's end is the MVP – most valuable pirate!

The life of a magician is never easy…thankfully, it just got a bit easier! Utilizing putty, a "trick" guide, and 8 nearly-invisible threads, the Mind Sword is one of the more foolproof magic props out there. A dark thread is attached between the cap and a piece of putty, and the putty can be placed anywhere around your waist. Moving your hips back pulls the base of the sword and grabs it out of glasses, through the included "force ring," and toward your hands using a pulley system of sorts. Allowing your tricks to look even more inconspicuous is the delayed start-up glow of the Mind Sword. Finally, since the string is near your waist, you can keep audience members in amazement when you don't rely on swift hand motions or suspicious movements. It's recommended that you use dark clothing and perform in somewhat dim areas to maximize the effect of the trick. With practice, you might just become your peers' favorite mini-magician!

Reading through this Usborne book made me want to take a few vacation days and go explore someplace exotic. It highlights some of the most popular or influential explorers from ancient to current times. It shares their exciting stories in a concise but captivating way, showing the supplies they needed, hardships endured, reasons for their travels, how their trips made history, and more. The text itself is fascinating, but the illustrations really make the book stand out. There are cartoon drawings and profiles of the explorers with speech bubbles displaying things they said or wrote, photographs or reproductions of famous vessels, tools, etc. used in exploration, colorful maps, and scenes of impressive things explorers discovered. Small text boxes share especially interesting information, captions are descriptive and informational, and the text is engaging. Starting with the ancient Egyptian adventurer Harkhuf, who traveled to a place called Yam to bring back precious treasures to the king of Egypt, the book continues through explorers such as the ancient Greek Pytheas, Vikings like Leif Ericsson, the Italian traveler Marco Polo, the Muslim explorer Ibn Battuta who covered 75,000 miles across Africa, the 15th Century Chinese adventurer Zheng He who explored the lands around China for the emperor and spread the word that China was in charge, Portuguese sailors who explored the African west coast looking for a way to Asia, Christopher Columbus and other adventurers who explored/invaded the New World, and Ferdinand Magellan's trip around the world. The scientific aspects of later explorations are also covered, like Captain Cook's mapping of the coast of Canada, and then attempting a scientific expedition to the Pacific Ocean; nature-lover and German-born Alexander von Humboldt who studied the plants and wildlife of South American jungles; Lewis and Clark's remarkable adventure across North America; Dr. Livingstone's missionary efforts in Africa; British officer Charles Stuart who explored the Australian outback; and even more current Antarctic adventures and races. Ocean and space exploration are touched on lightly. Obviously, a wide range of explorers and explorations are covered, so this is a perfect introductory book for kids and a good way to get them to see the excitement and adventure of exploring. Just so you know – I'm not particularly an art person. However, I do like to understand the interrelationships between historical events and culture. This book bridges an amazing gap – historical events and art history. Designed to be a brief survey of art (from 1830 to 1970) it functions as an art history, an art appreciation, and an art techniques (doing art) course. Not to mention the insights it provides into the people and places covered in the history course. This not-particularly-an-art-person is totally impressed!

Each of the 16 lessons covers an art history period – romanticism through psychedelic art and tie dye – with impressionism, expressionism, modernism, and surrealism among others in between. Each lesson starts with an overview of the history and art of the time period. The succinct coverage is augmented by suggested web links/books/videos but there are also full-color reproductions (in various sizes) of period works included in the book. Sidebar information includes research questions and learning objectives rounding out the instruction. The lesson then moves into the doing art portion with clearly stated assignments, lists of needed supplies, student and author examples, and step-by-step illustrations. For instance, Lesson 5 is Art Nouveau and Symbolism (an ism I missed earlier) which is coordinated with the BF lessons on The Jungle and teaches us that Art Nouveau was an attempt to apply a new look to all of the applied arts while Symbolism was dramatically different – artists defining their art with dramatic emotions rather than story telling. Among the developments of the period; posters became a fine art medium for the first time. The activity for this lesson is designing a decorative initial in the Art Nouveau style.

Help is available for the young artist (and/or his teacher). The KnoodleU.com website (book purchaser is entitled to access) contains tutorials, resources, tips, quizzes and even mid-term exams. Use of the DK book, Art, is suggested to augment the lessons and provide additional visuals (there's some nudity in the DK book and the author addresses this question helpfully and cautiously). A very helpful timeline that includes world events, art events, art projects and the BF book list is provided.

Easily a stand-alone art class – or more by just adding the BF books as read alongs, this a perfect complement to the entire Beautiful Feet course and will provide the student with an excellently rounded-out history/humanities course. 65 pgs, spiral-bound ~ Janice

This exciting historical fiction novel takes readers right into the centers of Ancient Rome – the palace and the Colosseum. The story follows two young tiger brothers, captured from the jungle and taken to Rome. The larger cub is taken to the Colosseum to be grown into a killer beast, while the smaller one is taken to the palace where the Emperor gives it to his 12 year-old daughter as a gift. Julius the animal trainer takes care of the pet tiger, named Boots, helping to train him and keep the princess safe at the same time. The tigers' paths may never have crossed again, if not for a practical joke gone wrong. When Boots gets loose, it's Julius and Princess Aurelia that will pay - Julius for getting too close to the princess, and the princess for showing too much interest in Christians. If Julius and Boots face Boots' bigger, badder brother in the ring, is there any chance they will survive? By Lynne Reid Banks, 194 pgs, pb. – Jess

Slide out pages make this an engaging read – literally! As little ones pull out the tabs, they see the flower grow from tall to taller to tallest. A snowflake falls to the ground as you see it low, lower, and lowest. There is also many/more/most, long/longer/longest and small/smaller/smallest. The illustrations have a fun modern flair as you teach measurement. This would make a great gift! 7x7” ~ Sara
