Modern technology meets ages-old handwork skills. What better way to learn and practice beginning crochet than to make something you’ll use every day? Colorful yarn, basic stitches, and step-by-step instructions soon add up to a cover you can slip your tablet into. You have the option of making it either with or without an overlapping flap. Add a strap and you’re ready to go. The cover could also double for a small shoulder bag. Kit includes 100% pure wool yarn, a plastic crochet hook and illustrated instructions.

This is a great iPad accessory for students. Keys are color-coded so that beginning keyboarders will know which finger to use for which key. But it is not just beginners that will benefit. Keyboard has a good tactile feel and syncs with the iPad effortlessly via Bluetooth. You'll only need the USB charger about every 120 hours or so. The case has a business-quality look and feel, not the padded bumper look of some protective products. A great enhancement to your student's iPad, or yours!

Do you have an iPad – or are you thinking of getting one? This book will be your friend. From its beginning chapter – Your Child Needs an iPad – it's easy to see the general orientation of the book (an iPad is a good thing). However, it's the rest of the book that will prove its worth. Covering everything from the basics of getting started, security, and apps to specifics about all types of apps – educational, productivity, photos/videos, and music/games – the book concludes with some general info – communicating and sharing. Within each of these chapters you will probably discover some basic information that you already know – and then much that you did not.

Everything about this book makes it user-friendly. First, there is the color-coding so it's easy to get to the chapter you need at whatever moment you need it. Second, the instructional text is essentially bullet points connected to screen shots and illustrations (i.e. tap once on this button; press on this; swipe this, etc.) that literally walks you through an app or a process. Third, there is a sidebar column that provides special notes: don't forget, hot tip, beware; each designated by a consistent, appropriate icon (i.e. an elephant for don't forget). Fourth, there is a comprehensive index in the back.

While some of this information is basic and easy to figure out for those who are technologically minded, there is also some excellent information that is much less commonly known – like creating flashcards, slideshows, creating music, etc. which will add value for the homeschooling family. If you're unsure or less experienced with this new, ubiquitous technology, you'll welcome this excellent tutorial. If you consider yourself somewhat of an expert, you might be pleasantly surprised to find there are still things for you to learn. 215 pgs. pb. ~ Janice

If you've ever wondered how strong your force powers are, look no further! This sequel to the original Force Trainer works in much the same way: by measuring the power of your mind (essentially your level of concentration), you can manipulate the Force through a series of challenges. After downloading the companion app and connecting your tablet to the device, you'll be able to pick from ten different holographic Force trials ranging from "Padawan" to "Jedi Master". These include raising Luke's X-Wing, droid combat, dueling Darth Vader, building your own lightsaber, and more. There is no physical limitation to who can try and how well they can do in each challenge—adults and children alike can test their Force powers! And, if you find yourself struggling with a particular challenge, Yoda is always ready to assist you. More challenges will also be available as new Star Wars movies debut, allowing you to continue your trials beyond the original series. Unleash your Force powers! Requires a tablet (iPad, Kindle, or Samsung Galaxy) with the companion app. Smaller devices can be used but often produce sub-optimal visual quality.

This "Painless" addition does a great job of explaining the concepts of chemistry. Chemistry is presented in easy-to-understand terminology that will help students understand. Chapters cover the topics of matter, periodic table of the elements, phases of matter, gas laws, mixtures, molecules and compounds, chemical reactions, acids/bases/salts, nuclear reactions, and environmental chemistry.

Every chapter includes textual information that is written to the student, diagrams, illustrations, 'brain ticklers' which review material from the previous section, boxes with vocabulary and important facts, and a summary of the chapter in bulleted format. You even have the option of downloading a free app for iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, and Android, which includes quizzes and games. The quizzes test over material taken directly from the book, but the games are simply for fun not content related.

Use this 257-page book as a self-study course in the middle school grades, or as a course summary, review, or introduction for chemistry. You could also use this as a supplement to your existing curriculum, to add simpler explanations and fun review, for a 'painless' understanding of the subject. ~ Donna

Our kinesthetic learners are those students who solve problems or create by moving their bodies. This is also the learning style most overlooked in the classroom but can be accommodated at home. All kids can benefit from an activity break during their lessons. Walkabouts combine an activity break with a lesson! Getting kids up and moving increases brain plasticity, and it’s fun!

Each Walkabout lasts 7-10 minutes and starts with a peppy song. Students watch them on a computer or tablet. You have a happy little animated host (Jax or Gia) guiding you through the lesson, as you walk, hop, march, jump, squat, gallop, and more! There is a lot of following directions, which is always helpful to learn. As questions come up on the screen, children answer by moving their bodies. For example, in a lesson about irregular plural nouns, the screen shows the word “fish” at the top of the screen with “fishes” to the lower left and “fish” to the lower right. Students show the right answer by doing a log roll jump (a double hop with a sideways jump) in the direction of the correct answer. Then they move the single noun to the middle of the screen with an answer above and below. Students do a jumping jack for the top answer, and a squat for the bottom answer. It is really cute!

Getting started is a breeze. We mail you a paper with your access code and you are in! The teacher dashboard has 5 buttons. Only five! Most of you will use the big green button more than the others. It is where you create the Walkabout. All you do is select a grade level (PK, K, 1 or 2) then choose a math or ELA/Reading standard and that is it! The standards are written out and list a skill, so even if you are not required to meet any of these specifically, you can choose a skill to practice. I found the lessons reinforce, rather than introduce, concepts. You can choose from Headstart, Common Core, Nat’l Assoc for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) or your specific state’s standards. You can have a single student use this or a group doing it together and even assesses individual student’s comprehension (up to 4 individuals.) A homeschooling parent can assign a Walkabout and give it to a student to practice certain skills. It is so quick and easy to use! I liked the option of printing out a worksheet to go with the lesson. They cleverly call these walksheets. I know a worksheet means sitting down with a pencil, but after taking an activity break, it is way to hold a student accountable for their activity and assess their comprehension. If you have an ADD/ADHD child, activity breaks are especially useful in helping them focus and learn. The ease of use and the quality of activities, along with an affordable price for a 1 year subscription all make Walkabouts a good option for parents and classroom teachers. ~ Sara

Another addition to the "Painless" series, this book does a great job of explaining the concepts of earth science. Earth science is presented in easy-to-understand terminology that will help students understand. Chapters cover the topics of earth structure, atmosphere, weather and climate, hydrosphere, lithosphere, weathering, erosion and deposition, earthquakes and volcanoes, plate tectonics, earth's history, and earth in space.

Every chapter includes textual information that has been written to the student, diagrams, illustrations, 'brain ticklers' which review material from the previous section, boxes with vocabulary and important facts, and a summary of the chapter in bulleted format. You even have the option of downloading a free app for iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, and Android, which includes quizzes and games. The quizzes test over material taken directly from the book, but the games are simply for fun – not content related.

Use this 300+ page book as a self-study course in the middle school grades, or as a course summary, review, or introduction for Earth Science. You could also use this as a supplement to your existing curriculum, to add simpler explanations and fun review. ~ Donna

Think of this inexpensive book not so much as a spelling program, but more as a spelling instructor. The focus is on letter sounds and spelling rules. For instance, the long o sound can be made with the following letter combinations: o, o_e, oa, oe, ow, au, eau, oh, ol, ou, ough, eo, ew. At our house, spelling instruction coincides with phonics instruction in the early grades. We commonly study a letter combination and related words one day, a different letter combination that makes the same sound (with related words) another, then give words with both letter combinations another day to ensure they have really learned the words. This book does a good job of listing letter combinations that can make each sound (common, unusual, and oddball), as well as giving many other spelling rules on plurals, prefixes and suffixes, compound words, homonyms, and Greek and Latin root words. 104 activities, with answers in the book, are included. Recently revised, the book also includes free access to an iPhone/iPad/Android app. Consider this one if you want a basic framework on which to base your own spelling program, or if you have a junior high or high schooler needing remedial spelling work. 284 pgs, pb.

Learn fascinating principles of robotic engineering and coding while you build robots! Sounds like a dream come true for the young engineer, doesn't it? The basic idea is simple: there are eight different models of robot to build, including a humanoid robot, a dinosaur, a crocodile, and more. Each model emphasizes a different type of robotic "sense." The crocodile changes its movement pattern when an object approaches it, and the humanoid robot avoids obstacles. Other models carry out various individual principles of robotics. Each design is controlled by a visual programming app and an ultrasound sensor: in response to data gathered by the sensor, kids can modify the way each type of robot behaves by coding through a tablet or smartphone (perhaps an Android?) This could mean altering its movement pattern, changing direction, adjusting speed, or more. Kids can make a particular build of robot incredibly complex, learning new facets of robotics or programming along the way! Includes a 64-page, easy-to-follow, full-color instruction booklet. Requires 3 AA batteries and a tablet or smartphone. App runs on iOS for iPhone 4S or later, iPad 3 or later, and iPod 5 or later. Also runs on Android 4.3 or later with Bluetooth 4.0 support.

Some of the most important activities little ones can do are those that develop motor skills – both fine and gross motor – and this book provides great suggestions for activities to build those skills at home. The first section of the book explains how young children learn and develop. The second part of the book includes the 40 active-learning programs. Each two-page program consists of an overview on the area of learning, list of materials and set-up (if applicable), the actual activities (3 or more per program), tips for adjusting the activities, variations, related resources – games and books that will provide more help in certain developmental areas, and further information such as definitions, etc. For example, the first program is "Amazing Animal Tricks." Children will improve strength, balance, coordination, and body awareness, along with improving visual skills, understanding position and direction words, and following directions. This program incorporates the use of stuffed animals from around your home and a small blanket or large towel. Choose from five outlined activities – Silly Moving, Moving with Direction, Jumping Over, Animal Toss, and Animals Books. Suggestions are included for improving math skills and helping your child succeed. 'Further Information' includes explanations for the movements and skills needed to perform the activities. The third section of the book offers lists of the early learning standards that the activities meet. For parents who want a good resource for activities with their little ones, this book packs a lot into the pages. Activities for the purpose of development will stimulate and entertain for hours. Turn off the television, put the computer and iPad in sleep mode, and get up and move with your children. ~ Donna

Pearson brings the standards of a classroom curriculum to homeschool. This homeschool bundle includes a hardcover student text, two Teacher Resource DVDs, and a postcard with instructions for registering for online access to teaching resources, an e-text, videos and much more.
The student text is substantial, with 1110 pages. There are 21 chronological "topics" or units, starting with the origins of civilization and ending with the world today (1980-present). Each topic is divided into shorter chapters, which end with several assessment questions. There are plenty of visuals, including illustrations, maps, charts, arwork from that period and more. "Topics" each include objectives, terms to define, end-of-unit assessment questions and a reminder to go online to PearsonRealize.com for digital resources.
All of the teaching resources are found online at PearsonRealize.com. You will receive a postcard with your bundle that includes instructions on setting up an account. (Note: make sure you select the course title itself - World History 2016 - instead of searching for an actual school code.) Once logged in, click on the course title and you will see the table of contents for the course. When you click on a Topic, you will see several lessons for that unit, along with some additional assignments such as projects, videos or document-based activities. Printable tests and reviews can also be accessed here. Students can also access, download and print "Interactive Reading Notepads" which are Word documents that correlate with the reading assignments and offer space for notes and questions to check comprehension and understanding. Teaching resources for each lesson are found on the right side of the screen and typically include: answer keys (for the Interactive Reading Notepads, quizzes, and text questions); lesson summaries (provided in text, audio, Spanish and Spanish audio); teaching suggestions for English Language Learners, and a Lesson Organizer document which is a kind of a lesson plan with a listing of all of the readings, assignments, and objectives for the lesson. Teachers also have the ability to customize tests for each lesson, adding questions from a testbank or writing their own. You also have the option to create a class and track student assignment progress. There is a lot to look at at PearsonRealize.com, so I would plan to spend some time browsing through what is offered to familiarize yourself with where to locate all of the various resources.
The third part of the bundle is the Teacher Resource DVD set. These are primarily offline versions of the videos found on PearsonRealize.com. No printables, assessments or lesson plans are included on these DVDs. System requirements - supported browsers: Chrome 10+, Firefox 4+ IE 9+, Safari 5+. Supported devices: iPad with iOS 4+, iPhone, Nexxus, Surface or XOOM. Operating systems: Mac 10.6.8 and 10.7+ or Windows XP/Vista/7.
This course is a good option for families looking for a secular high school world history course where both teacher and student have reliable internet access. There is a good amount of video and audio content, which will appeal to students who may struggle with a completely textbook-based course.

It's the same! But, different. Leaving the world of CDs behind, Rosetta Stone Homeschool has taken the leap into the world of online subscription formats. As with every major format change, there are advantages and disadvantages. You will probably like the changes which provide more mobility and more flexibility (unless you do not have access to high speed internet or do not wish to enter the internet world). All the aspects of the Rosetta Stone approach to language acquisition that we've come to love and expect are there. It's just packaged differently.

So, what's different? First of all, there are only four products (instead of the 70 or so we carried before). Each product is an online subscription. This subscription gives one student 12 months of access. You purchase a subscription then you choose your language as part of the activation process. There are 24 languages available and a subscription purchase lets you choose any one of the 24 (Family Pack subscribers can choose up to three different languages). The subscription also gives you access to ALL levels of instruction available in that language. All languages have at least three levels. Some languages have five levels. If workbooks, quizzes, or tests are available (only for a few languages), access to pdf versions of this material comes with the subscription. Because all content is online, you can access it from a computer, laptop, or mobile device and you can access it from anywhere that you have a fast internet connection. You can even download lessons (with Audio Companion) to use when the internet is not available.

So, what's the same? The dynamic immersion instructional methodology, the voice recognition software, and the student tracking abilities. In other words, all the good stuff that has made Rosetta Stone distinctive and a favorite with homeschoolers. And there is still a 30 Day Money Back Guarantee if you are not satisfied with the program. To get a sense of the program, check out the video demo found on our website.

Rosetta Stone's "Dynamic Immersion™" methodology combines multimedia technology with a total immersion approach utilizing four aspects images, intuition, interactivity, and instruction. Real-life images are coupled with words or phrases, both spoken and written. There is constant interaction with the program, making selections which are confirmed if correct. Understanding of the language is built through spoken responses to real-life simulations utilizing TruAccent® speech-recognition technology which listens, analyzes, and corrects the student response. [Headset with microphone is needed but not included.]

Core Lessons cover: A. Listening & Reading combined; B. Listening only, C. Reading only, D. Speaking, and E. Writing. There are Focused Activities that concentrate on language skills vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, reading, speaking, listening, writing and Adaptive Recall which are review sequences. While the general content and methodology is similar between the various Rosetta Stone versions, the Homeschool version is unique in giving parents the ability to plan and track the student's progress through the lessons and activities and to print data reports.

Rosetta Stone Levels (in any language) cover the following material:

Level 1 Build a Foundation. Fundamental vocabulary, essential language structure, basic conversational skills including greetings and introductions. Includes colors, adjectives, numbers, prepositions, definite and indefinite articles, singular and plural nouns, family relations, the five senses and time of day.

Level 2 Navigate Your Surroundings. Builds on vocabulary and essential language structure. Giving/getting directions, using transportation, telling time, dining out, and enjoying basic social interactions. Includes verb tenses, adverbs, formal imperatives, school subjects, months, and emotions.

Level 3 Connect with the World. Builds on language fundamentals and conversational skills. Learn to share ideas and opinions, express your feelings and talk about everyday life, your interests, your work, subjective, present perfect, weights, and measurements.

Level 4 Deepen Your Understanding. Expands on what you learned in Levels 1, 2, and 3. Negotiate complex situations with confidence. Develop conversational skills to navigate the workplace, care for your health, arrange repairs, and move abroad.

Level 5 Develop Your Command of the Language. Refine crucial communication skills and make full use of everything you've learned in Levels 1-4. Discuss entertainment and culture, government and the marketplace, and celebrate language-learning success.

The following languages are available (with number of levels in parenthesis): Arabic (3), Chinese (Mandarin) (3), Dutch (3), English (American) (5), English (British) (5), Filipino (Tagalog) (3), French (5), German (5), Greek (3), Hebrew (3), Hindi (3), Irish (3), Italian (5), Japanese (3), Korean (3), Persian (Farsi) (3), Polish (3), Portuguese (Brazil) (3), Russian (3), Spanish (Latin American) (5 Workbooks for Levels 1-3), Spanish (Spain) (5), Swedish (3), Turkish (3), and Vietnamese (3).

    System Requirements:

    Windows 7, 8, 10 or higher

    Computer Hardware Requirements:

Windows: 2.33 GHz or faster x86-compatible processor OR Intel® Atom™ 1.6GHz or faster processor for netbooks

Mac: Intel Core™ Duo 1.33GHz or faster processor

1 GB of RAM or higher

    1024 x 768 display resolution

High-Speed Internet connection required (at least 768bps)

In terms of high school credit equivalency (as before) Rosetta Stone is not "accredited" because it is not a school, but each level of the Homeschool program has a "Full Year Curriculum" lesson plan. If you follow that lesson plan, each level will be a 36 week program if you're not using the supplemental (suggestions in teacher materials) materials, or 45 weeks if you are (equivalent to 1 school year). Not all schools or boards will accept RS as credit, so checking to ensure it will be accepted is recommended.

While it's a bit sad to say "good-bye" to Rosetta Stone's old standby CD-based program, it's easy to see the advantages and necessity of increased mobility. Thankfully, favorite features have been retained and the program remains a strong option for high school foreign language. As before, we encourage the use of a grammar workbook to complement the strong conversational aspect of the program. ~ Janice

~ Janice

This subscription gives one student 24 months of access.
