Many animals roam the forest looking for food. With this forest food-chain game, learn which animals eat other animals or just what plants they eat. Meanwhile, try to build up your stack of cards. How? By picking up your card, looking at the animal on your card, and trying to "consume" your opponent's card. But watch out! Even if the grizzly doesn't get you—death and decay might! Fun and learning rolled into one with several versions of play. For 2-6 players. Includes full-color illustrations and scorecard.

R.C. Sproul wrote this allegorical storybook about a group of small, glowing, fairy-like creatures called Lightlings who follow the same basic path as humanity. A grandpa tells the story to his grandson, who is afraid of the dark. The Lightlings sin against their Creator and run away into a dark forest, where they live in complete darkness. However, when one of the Lightlings has a child who is also the son of their Creator, light starts to enter their world again. The grandpa explains how the Lightlings story is basically the story of our redemption through Jesus. The back of the storybook also includes discussion questions with Scripture references to help children understand the deeper meaning of the story, although it is also pretty clear from the grandpa's explanation. Colorful pictures illustrate the storybook. 40 pgs, pb. ~Rachel

Another excellent entry into the “science + fun” category of board games! The goal of Photosynthesis is to grow a thriving forest of trees by strategically planting them around the hexagonal “forest-to-be.” The soil is variegated from a tan exterior to a deep green interior; trees closer to the center earn more points when their life cycles end. Play begins as players plant two small trees of their own color along the exterior edge. Each turn consists of two phases: Photosynthesis and Life Cycle. The first rotates the “sun” and generates “Light Points” for each tree in direct sunlight (1 for small trees, 2 for medium, and 3 for large). But beware! As the sun travels around the board, every tree casts a shadow, preventing trees behind from earning points. So, while having trees in the middle is beneficial, it’s also risky, as opponent’s taller trees (and yours!) will often sap light points from those closer to the center. The second phase, Life Cycle, allows players to buy seeds, plant seeds next to their trees, and end the life cycle of large trees to collect Scoring Tokens. Once the sun makes 3 revolutions around the board, the game ends, and the player with the most points from Scoring Tokens and Light Tokens wins! For 2-4 players. 30-60-minute playtime.

We all have a choice between living a meaningless life or entering into a poetic life where every moment is touched by the hand of God. Which do you choose? How do you become more aware of the hand of God in the everyday? Join John, a seventeenth century farmer in the Black Forest of Germania, in this engaging allegory of the spiritual battle facing believers in Jesus Christ today. Exploring worldview concepts such as fatalism and nihilism, salvation and new birth, spiritual warfare, adversity, providence, and grace, your family will be spellbound as they journey through various situations (some may be intense for younger readers) following the Song of the Bear and overcoming the evil plots of Kytann, the great wolf. Well-written, this allegory captivated me through the descriptive telling of our Christian walk and life. The author has provided a free downloadable study guide on his website-http://www.thesongofthebear.com/ SC. 173 pgs. ~Deanne

Board game of the year in 2012, this one does not disappoint! It boasts a good blend of luck and strategy, plenty of variation built in to randomize every game, and easy to learn gameplay that will appeal to the serious and light gamers alike. The goal of the game is to earn the most gold at the end of the game; however, the path to doing so is different every time. To set up the game, players choose four of the eight possible quadrants, each of which can go in any spot, and three of the ten possible Kingdom Builder cards, which determine how players earn gold. Each quadrant of the board is divided into hexagons of seven different terrain types, so the board looks like a birds-eye view of land - varoius patches of flowes, forests, mountains, etc. Each grouping of terrain is a different size and shape. Each quadrant also holds a couple of hexes with a unique landmark. Basic gameplay is simple - each turn, draw a terrain card and place three settlements on that type of terrain. The golden rule of the game: each settlement has to be adjacent to another one of your settlements if possible, so choose your starting point wisely! What adds strategy to the game is that settling next to a landmark earns you a special action for each turn for the rest of the game, such as moving a settlement two spaces, or building a fourth settlement on the end of a three-settlement line. Also keep in mind the Kingdom Builder cards as you plan your placements; depending on which three you have on the table you may earn points for the largest settlement, the most settlements in one line, or settlements surrounding a landmark hex. Maximize your special actions to complete settlements according to the Kingdom Builder cards to earn the most gold! 2-4 players, 45 minutes. - Steph

This devotional book combines the natural love children have for animals with a study of character traits they exhibit (good and bad) for a delightful end product of short but engaging devotionals for young children. It is divided into sections by habitat – farm, zoo, forest, water, sky, etc. Each section contains 4-8 devotionals, each highlighting a particular animal. Each devotional covers a two-page spread. One page holds the text, and the other is a full-page illustration along with a few simple questions about the devotional to discuss with your kids after you've finished reading it. The book is fully illustrated by cute watercolor illustrations; even on pages of text there are colorful pictures around the margins and in the background. Some of the animals covered include beavers, kittens, monkeys, owls, earthworms, pigs, hippos, and hummingbirds. 96 pgs, pb. – Melissa

It's anybody and everybody's game in Smallworld, from elves, to giants, to skeletons and more! Four different maps for 2, 3, 4, or 5 players are included, each larger than the last (but never big enough for everyone!) Mountains, Woods, Hills, Farmlands, Swamps, Lakes and Seas are spread across each board. To kick off the game, players select a combination from the shuffled column of Races/Special Powers. Each race has its own inherent abilities. Giants, for example, require one less token to conquer regions next to Mountains they own. Special Powers involve the ability to fly, colonize water, earn points for terrain, and more. Racial Abilities are combined with Powers to create a playable race. These could include Diplomatic Ghouls, Forest Dwarves, or even Commando Trolls. Once you've picked a race, you attempt to conquer regions which have the highest benefit for your Race/Power, earning Victory Coins at the end of each round. However, it costs troop tokens to invade regions, and before long you'll find your race stretched to its limit! Once you bring your race into dominance, don't be afraid to abandon it when a more advantageous group comes along… Your previous race becomes inactive, a new race is chosen, and you attempt to earn more Victory Coins with your new Race/Power. This cycle of conquering, earning coins, and sending races into decline continues until 8-10 turns (depending on the board) have passed, and the player with the most Victory Coins wins! Note: one race, the Amazons, may be slightly racy for some families. They wear a leaf bikini but are fairly cartoonish. Additionally, the box's tagline is, "…It's a world of Slaughter, after all!" but the game itself is not violent and does not indicate violence beyond taking over regions from other players. For 2-5 players. 40-80 minutes.

Science textbooks are rife with environmentalist outcries about global warming, the need to recycle, acid rain, overpopulation, disappearing water and wildlife, etc. etc. But are these claims valid? Are they substantiated by scientific evidence? Unfortunately, science has again bowed down to extremist groups, instilling fear and panic in children instead of examining and presenting the scientific evidence. This book, written by scientists and reviewed by acknowledged experts in the topics addressed, presents the facts, putting environmental concerns into perspective. It is intended as a "guidebook to help parents and teachers give their children and students a more balanced, science-based view of the many environmental controversies they encounter". Fourteen major environmental

topics are addressed in chapters titled "Will Billions Starve?" "Natural Resources - On the Way Out?" "Are Our Forests Dying?" "The Rain Forest - One Hundred Acres a Minute?" "American Wildlife - On the Edge?" "Where Have all the Species Gone?" "The Air We Breathe" "A Hotter Planet?" "Sorting Out Ozone" "Acid Rain" "Not a Drop to Drink" "Don't Eat that Apple!" "A Garbage Crisis?" and "The Recycling Myth."

Running counter to the wisdom of politically correct public school adopted texts, this book may not make it to the approved curriculum list of your local school, but you can incorporate it into your science curriculum at home. Suitable for use with children of all ages, you can present it as a unit to all grade levels at once. Its sensible approach may help you to "save the planet" without scaring your kids!
