An introductory guidebook to rocks, fossils, and much more. Through the numerous colorful illustrations and diagrams, the various geological processes that helped to form the world's collection of rocks, minerals, and fossils are described. Students will learn the difference between igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks as well as what clues they give us as to how the Earth's surface formed. Students will additionally learn where to look for certain rocks and fossils and how to identify them. The effect natural forces (such as water, wind, ice, and volcanic eruptions) have had on the shape of the land is also discussed. Much of the book sticks to the subject, but evolution is assumed and evolutionary dating is used. 32 pgs. ~ Enh

If you have a young one interested in rocks and collecting, this book can offer some fun supplementary activities to educate them on the subject. Explore Rocks and Minerals teaches children about the structure of the earth, minerals and crystals, igneous/sedimentary/metamorphic rocks, fossils, and how to be a rock hound. All of this is done by incorporating 20 different hands-on projects that will make the learning fun like making an edible 'earth' model, growing your own crystals from Epsom salts, modeling basaltic columns, baking 'pumice' meringue cookies, eating a 'sed-sandwich' for lunch, and wrapping up by making your own rock display. More than just fun, your children will be introduced to the amazing world of rocks and minerals. This non-reproducible book is divided into 7 chapters and each includes information on the topic, vocabulary words, interesting facts, black & white illustrations and activities. The back of the book includes a glossary and a page of resources in case you are interested in further investigation. You can use this book as a supplement to your curriculum or do a mini-study on rocks and minerals. Either way, you may be training a future geologist. ~ Donna

Some of the field guides we have at our house would never make it on a rock finding trek – they're simply too large to lug around. This rock and mineral guide from DK is just the right size for fitting into your jacket or shirt pocket – 3 ¾"x 5". It may be small, but it isn't short on information! You will find an introduction to rocks and minerals, a section of minerals divided by their coloration, and rocks divided into the 3 categories – igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. Pages are full of colored photos and facts about the specimen pictured. There is even a reference section at the back of this 160-page book. Never be without a reference again as you hike through the beautiful outdoors. ~ Donna

Wait, wait, Moms - keep reading! Magic Mud is technically a clay - and a terrific compound with just about everything you'd want out of a clay. It's all-natural, made from a mix of finely ground igneous and metamorphic rocks and water, and thus is conveniently non-toxic. It's immediately soft and pliable to the touch - no frustrating squeezing and warming, trying to make that hard lump of clay soft and workable. Magic Mud is a subtle, earthy tan color that won't stain hands and clothes, and the residue left on hands from working with the clay washes off easily with water or baby wipes. To top it off, it will air-dry to a nice, hard finish, or it can be fired, for an extra-durable state. When dry, it can be painted with a variety of paint types. I can't tell you that it won't dry out if you leave the whole lump sitting… but it is easily reconstituted by adding back whatever water evaporated out. This lends itself well to art projects, early childhood play, science projects, games that use clay, or just for fun. Just the soft, relaxing, feel of it… almost as fun as playing in real mud - just don't tell them it's clay. ~ Jess
