Coloring books help you to concentrate on a subject. This Dover book contains scientifically accurate renderings of the body organs and major systems for you to color while you study. It has a surprising amount of detail for an inexpensive book. Divided into 11 different sections, it covers all major body systems. Diagrams of systems are divided into numbered sections like color-by-number pictures. A chart lists the name of each body part and what color to use. A good, low-cost starter on anatomy.

Recommended for use with the Apologia science curriculum. This is very thorough, with 170 different coloring pages. The pages share both detailed anatomical drawings and in-depth text describing them. While this shares most of the same basic information as our other high school anatomy coloring book, I did notice a couple of differences. First of all, the pictures in this book seem to be a little more detailed, and, as mentioned before, the text shares the page with the drawings, whereas in the other book it is on the facing page. Also, this book has more coloring pages, roughly 30 extra pages. Some of these extra pages come from chapters either not covered in the other book or not covered in the same depth. For example, this book has a human development chapter, which the other does not. Also, while both books have indexes, this book also includes a glossary. - Melissa

Want to learn about the brain? I mean, really learn about the brain? Topping out at just over 300 pages, this coloring book for older students is similar to the Anatomy Coloring Book, but more limited in scope. Nine units cover a general introduction to the brain, nervous system function, development of the nervous system, the spinal cord, the brain, cranial nerves, spinal nerves, the visceral nervous system, and support systems of the central nervous system. Each coloring page is accompanied by a page of text on the left-hand side, which contains information about the structures and coloring instructions (in bold). Structures are labeled on the coloring page, and the block text is white, outlined with black, so names can be color-coordinated to the structure in the drawing. Although this book goes into a lot more detail than your average high-school biology or human anatomy course, it would be helpful for anyone taking or planning to take pre-med courses or with a deep interest in brain anatomy. pb. – Jess

I think “adventure was a good choice of words to include in this whirlwind tour of the human body! This full-color, lively guide takes readers system by system through the human body, incorporating diagrams, detailed anatomy illustrations, facts, physical activities, and pencil-and-paper activities. Nine chapters cover the skeletal system, muscular system, nervous system, circulatory system, respiratory system, digestive system, eyes, ears, taste and smell. Each section is several pages long, and moves from the general to the more specific in content, and wraps up with activities. In the skeletal system section, readers can examine a fully labeled skeleton, with common and anatomical names for the bones and bone groups, and read facts about our bones. The next page zeroes in on the spine, shows how the spinal bones are put together, and shows how bones support our body and protect it. The last page on bones discusses bone growth, and shows the different parts of a bone using a detailed bone diagram and a blown-up cross-section of bone. The activities for the bone section include a word puzzle using bone terminology, a match between common and scientific bone names, a word problem that asks students to try to figure out how tall they may get, and a list of places on your body you can touch to feel the different bones and joints that are hidden underneath. Although the pages are pretty busy, the book quality is excellent, and the detailed anatomy drawings are terrific. I also like that the activities and “side-bars apply anatomy topics to kids, so they can “experience for themselves, and think about anatomy in terms of their bodies, not just from a drawing in a book! - Jess

Ever seem like all the good anatomy coloring books are for older students? Not this one! Each page in this coloring book focuses on one anatomical topic, with a mix of facts and a black-and-white drawings to color. Tidbits of information are given in little square bubbles with arrows pointing at the drawing. The drawings are detailed, but large and perfect for coloring with fine-point markers or colored pencils. For example, on the page that explains joints, a see-through drawing of a boy bending and moving features three boxes that show how pivot, elbow, and ball-and-socket joints work. Other pages focus on types of cells, types of muscles, how blood flows through the heart, the circulatory system, the lymphatic system, types of blood cells, what happens when you breathe, the digestive system and digestive process, the brain and senses, nerve cells, the part of the skin and much more! A perfect complement to any elementary study of the human body! 30 pgs, pb. – Jess

Having a background in the medical field, I found myself perusing this book with an eye focused on details - How accurate is the information? How easily would it be understood by the average reader especially in the sections detailing common disorders? How straightforward is it to navigate as a learning resource? All I can say is WOW! This book does indeed exceed all expectations. The Human Body beautifully illustrates the internal human body through the use of 3D computer images, computed tomography (CT scan) images, microscopic image photography, PET scan images and color illustrations. It is organized into twelve chapters which include the integrated body; skeletal system; muscular system; nervous system; endocrine system; cardiovascular system; respiratory system; skin, hair and nails; lymph and immunity; digestive system; urinary system; and reproductive and life cycle. Each chapter is further structured into the anatomy, the physiology, and a discussion of common disorders for each body system. These are well organized and use the correct terminology explained accurately and clearly. The back of the book also contains a ten-page glossary of terms to further explain the terms or for quick reference. The authors have given a great depth of information in an easy to understand manner, and because of this I feel this book would be a valuable asset to anyone with an interest in learning more about our human body, how it functions and the disorders that affect mankind. If the contents of this book are not enough to whet your interest, it also contains an interactive DVD-ROM (computer) to enhance learning. What makes this DVD-ROM interactive? First, each of the body systems is illustrated, and a simple scroll over with your computer mouse will give the name of the structure or organ examined. Also included are video clips of the body in action; for example, the heart beating is shown complete with the pumping action and the electrical impulses as it prepares to deliver blood flow. The only negative I noticed with the DVD-ROM is that it is all graphics and no voice to explain what you are viewing. However the text does explain the material and the appropriate pages will direct you to the DVD-ROM for enhanced learning. The DVD-ROM is compatible with Windows 98/ 2000/ XP. H/c, oversized (10.5x12), 256 richly illustrated pages. Please note: Dorling Kindersly Publisher is not a Christian publisher, and there are (naturally) images of male and female body systems, a video clip on conception, and a discussion of sexually transmitted infections. Overall, this is done tastefully with a focus on the structure and function of the human body. ~ Deanne

A perfect introduction to the human body for a primary child! In this book, the body is explained, literally, piece by piece, as children add body parts to their own body outline! The book is full of reproducible handouts and patterns that tell you what the part of the body does and what color to make the organ. First you should explain the functions of the body part to start out your study. Then you cut, paste, and follow directions to place the body part correctly on each child’s traced body outline. I would recommend only covering one or two body parts in a day. Then there are instructions on how to turn the explanation sheets into a small booklet that they children can keep! With the help of this book, your children will be introduced to the brain, heart, kidneys, bladder, cells, spleen, pancreas, gall bladder, reproductive organs, skeleton, muscles, stomach, intestines, liver, lungs, skin, eyes, nose, ears, tongue, and face. A “personal approach to studying the human body! 40 pgs, pb. - elise

More meat on the bones of this book than to Gray’s Anatomy Coloring Book. 291 pages (versus 127 in Gray’s) contain detailed anatomical drawings on the right-hand page, with explanatory text on the opposing page. Text is more detailed and more seriously presented than in Gray’s. Organization is by major body system; this organization and the index in the back make finding particular body parts easy. Gray’s is not as well organized. Level of detail in the drawings is similar in both books. If your student is serious about learning the human body, this is the one to choose.

You’ve probably looked at or used an anatomy coloring book with your students, but this book takes the quality to a new level. This coloring book has a hardcover, 52 illustrations to color on thick durable pages, and a lot of information. The idea behind the book is that you will remember the material better if you make an association between the information and coloring a picture of the topic. The book is divided into chapters which include terminology, skin, skeletal, muscular, taste, head, brain, nervous, endocrine, lymphatic, cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, urinary, reproductive, and immune systems. The illustrations are anatomically correct and include scientific labeling. Two pages are devoted to each topic with one page of information which also includes ‘10 things to remember’ for every topic and 1 page of illustrations to color. While these don’t have all of the detail you might find in some other anatomy coloring books, they are still detailed enough to be used as a supplement for any high school curriculum. This 128-page book also includes high-quality colored pencils (Faber Castell 8 color set), an eraser, and sharpener. A 52-question, fill-in-the-blank quiz is found at the conclusion of the book along with answer key and a full-color guide to the illustrations to be colored in the book. I know this book is intended for high school, but I think you could probably use it with junior high as well. The information is in an easy-to-read format and the book with materials is easy to transport with the built in pencil case. Use it as a ready reference, study tool, or reinforcement as you color a visual reminder. - Donna

Young children will be fascinated by the human body when they learn about how it works and “see underneath their skin with these fun wearables. Lessons revolve around the major parts of the body including the brain, eyes, ears, skin and hair, backbone, hand and arm bones, muscles, circulatory system, mouth, and digestive system. The lessons start off with basic information on the respective part of the body that the teacher can share with the students as they build the wearable and discuss the body part. A list of necessary materials and directions for creating the wearable follows. Each wearable is easily created using the included reproducible pattern and additional common items such as string, scissors, glue, markers and tape. Each wearable shows the inside of a part of the human body and is worn on that area on the outside. Wearables include “hear muffs, brain hats, hand bones mitt and ring set, muscle sleeve, a chest vest, and other unique projects. The wearable then becomes the basis for the lesson, as teachers are given questions and activities to use with children and their wearables that teach simple body concepts to young students. These lessons lay the foundation for the more complex teaching that students will encounter in later grades, but also give them an early idea and appreciation of how their body works. Additional features in each lesson include amazing facts about the human body, suggested books, vocabulary words, and extension activities including science and math exercises, games, songs, and other ideas. - Steph

Kids will enjoy this crazy project book. Containing three different wearable bodies - a skeleton, the muscles, and the digestive system/heart and lungs/brain - there are hours of fun cutting out, coloring in, and wearing of these systems (which are also quite educational). These models require some gluing or taping. That gets us about half way through the book, and there are still plenty of fun, educational projects to tackle. A body flip book is next, showing skeleton, muscles, nervous system, heart and lungs, and digestive system. Then come facts and models of the five senses. Eyes, ears, different noses, a hand, and a tongue model are ready to use, and these are accompanied by a mini book of the five senses (one the student gets to make, of course). Following that (yes, still more) is a basic Braille alphabet; a basic sign language alphabet; some words in sign; an eye, nose, and mouth flip face book (where these features can be mixed up); a shape and skeleton match-up; and a body poster - half showing the skeleton and half showing the muscles. Whew! There are a lot of different projects in this book - all great supplementary activities for any study of the human body. ~ Zach

While I already knew that Ellen McHenry has a talent for making complicated topics fun and understandable for middle schoolers, I was impressed all over again when I saw her newest offering. I mean, it seems manageable to teach chemistry to kids, but neurology? Things can get complicated when you start following nerve pathways across and through the brain! However, I was relieved to see that you don’t need to be a brain surgeon to teach this course. The book has two parts – a student booklet and a teacher’s section, both of which include reproducibles that you can copy for your own family or one classroom. The student booklet is at the core of the course, and includes all of the text and text-based activities. There are ten topical chapters in the booklet, plus “half-chapters that end in .5 and cover “extras that you could choose to cover or skip, depending on your interest and time available. The chapters cover the history of brain research, basic brain anatomy, the right and left sides of the brain, the parts of the brain and their functions, brain cells, neurons, learning and memory, the brain’s connection to the body, sleep and brain doctors. Each chapter includes several pages of friendly, straight-forward text on the topic, augmented by black-and-white graphics and the little fingerprint guys you might recognize from the author’s chemistry programs. Several review activities are provided at the end of each chapter. These are quite wide-ranging in format, so much so that I’m just going to have to give you specific examples! For instance, in the first chapter on brain research, the first activity asks students to research different brain scans on the internet and answer question about each, then read to find out more about Phineas Gage (the strangest story in brain research!), and finally, students complete a color-by-number “PET Scan. In the chapter about brain parts and functions you’ll find a crossword puzzle to complete, a diagram to color the parts of the brain, and “The Brain Song to listen to, which is included on a CD that comes with the curriculum. Other fun activities include making a 9-square puzzle of connected neurons and using the right and left sides of your brain to complete specific challenges. An answer key is provided at the end of the student portion, and contains all of the answers to activities with specific answers. The teacher’s section is primarily made up of more involved, hands-on activities. These are organized by corresponding chapter and include fun ideas like making a brain “hemisphere hat using the reproducible patterns that show the different areas of the brain, doing an MRI on an orange, making a human neuronal network, building an edible neuron, and much, much more. I was very impressed with the hands-on activities overall; they are very creative! This would be a very fun curriculum to use with a co-op, or with several of your children at one time. I would recommend finding some good text resources on the brain, as the visuals are a bit limited here, and there may be topics you’ll want to read more about, but I think the content and the activities here will definitely capture children’s interest! Currently, the curriculum comes in a binder, but will be transitioning to 3-hole, looseleaf format. – Jess

If you enjoy David Macaulay’s detailed, illustrated tours of architecture in Castle, Cathedral, or Pyramid or how he visually explains the intricacies of machines in The Way Things Work, you won’t want to miss this book in which he explores the just-as-impressive world inside the human body. Even if you think you have no interest in the subject, you can’t help but be drawn in by the detailed and imaginative illustrations, some of which resemble detailed anatomical drawings, and others with whimsical “takes on the various systems such as comparing the blood vessels to a theme park ride where oxygen molecules jump on and off of red blood cells. The 7 chapters explore cells and tissues, breathing and the circulatory system, the digestive system, the nervous system, the immune system and the reproductive system (quite tastefully done, I might add). Each page is dominated by Macaulay’s lively colored pencil illustrations displaying body structures from a variety of imaginative viewpoints. After you pore over the picture, a paragraph or two on explains the inner workings of the subject. I love the illustrations of enlarged body structures with a small walkway or railing in the foreground where people are standing and staring. These define the book as a whole rather well; it’s not an anatomy atlas or encyclopedia. It’s a very visual tour through the systems of the human body that shows readers “how it works and what those amazing systems at work inside of us would look like if we could really shrink ourselves and take a field trip. 336 pgs, hc. - Jess

The circulatory system can be a confusing topic, but this book tries to show it as the fun adventure it is and give students a solid understanding of how the heart and blood vessels work. It’s definitely not a little kid explanation, as the correct medical terminology and a fairly in-depth description are provided, but the story-like format and colorful pictures make the topic more captivating and accessible to younger students. With a full-color, almost comic-book appearance, the illustrations follow a little creature as it enters the blood stream of a girl. Speech bubbles from the traveling creature keep the comic-book feel of the book, while short paragraphs explain the science behind what you’re seeing. Red blood cells, chambers of the heart, lungs, valves, capillaries, arteries, veins, the aorta, cellular respiration, antibodies, clotting, the vena cava, nodes, and more are covered as the creature travels through the circulatory system. Even though there are lots of mysteries left about how the brain works, scientists have discovered a lot about this amazing part of the body. In a friendly and entertaining way, this book gives a very good overview of the brain, including the anatomy of the brain, components of the brain, how the brain develops over time, intelligence, eyesight, memory, mental illness, drugs that effect the brain, animal brains compared to humans, computers compared to humans, how the brain functions, the history of how we came to know about the brain, and more. It really is a good overview, with a solid amount of information given on each page. This is accomplished by using full-color, cartoony illustrations, speech and thought bubbles, information boxes, fact-filled captions, and short paragraphs that get right to the point. The illustrations and speech bubbles add a lot of humor to the book, so students will enjoy perusing it just for fun. It’s also good because it gives you some great examples of how the brain works by providing real-life examples students can relate to that deal with the brain, and even a few puzzles to solve that will require the use of brain power. Like many Usborne books, this one includes quicklinks, which are recommended website links that explain more about a specific topic, give examples, or provide a fun activity dealing with the topic. Even without the links, this book is full of fascinating and fun-to-read information about the brain. By Rebecca Treays, 32 pgs, pb. ~ Rachel
