Having a background in the medical field, I found myself perusing this book with an eye focused on details - How accurate is the information? How easily would it be understood by the average reader especially in the sections detailing common disorders? How straightforward is it to navigate as a learning resource? All I can say is WOW! This book does indeed exceed all expectations. The Human Body beautifully illustrates the internal human body through the use of 3D computer images, computed tomography (CT scan) images, microscopic image photography, PET scan images and color illustrations.

It is organized into thirteen chapters which include the integrated body; skeletal system; muscular system; nervous system; endocrine system; cardiovascular system; respiratory system; skin, hair and nails; lymph and immunity; digestive system; urinary system; reproduction and birth; and growth and development. Each chapter is further structured into the anatomy, the physiology, and a discussion of common disorders for each body system. These are well organized and use the correct terminology explained accurately and clearly. The back of the book also contains a ten-page glossary of terms to further explain the terms or for quick reference. The authors have given a great depth of information in an easy to understand manner, and because of this I feel this book would be a valuable asset to anyone with an interest in learning more about our human body, how it functions and the disorders that affect mankind.

If the contents of this book are not enough to whet your interest, it also contains an interactive DVD-ROM (computer) to enhance learning. What makes this DVD-ROM interactive? First, each of the body systems is illustrated, and a simple scroll over with your computer mouse will give the name of the structure or organ examined. Also included are video clips of the body in action; for example, the heart beating is shown complete with the pumping action and the electrical impulses as it prepares to deliver blood flow. The only negative I noticed with the DVD-ROM is that it is all graphics and no voice to explain what you are viewing. However the text does explain the material and the appropriate pages will direct you to the DVD-ROM for enhanced learning. The DVD-ROM is compatible with Windows XP (service pack 2)/Vista/7; Mac OS X v.10.4. H/c, oversized (10.5x12), 288 richly illustrated pages. Please note: Dorling Kindersly is not a Christian publisher, and there are (naturally) images of male and female body systems, a video clip on conception, and a discussion of sexually transmitted infections. Overall, this is done tastefully with a focus on the structure and function of the human body. ~ Deanne

If you enjoy David Macaulay's detailed, illustrated tours of architecture in Castle, Cathedral, or Pyramid or how he visually explains the intricacies of machines in The Way Things Work, you won't want to miss this book in which he explores the just-as-impressive world inside the human body. Even if you think you have no interest in the subject, you can't help but be drawn in by the detailed and imaginative illustrations, some of which resemble detailed anatomical drawings, and others with whimsical "takes" on the various systems such as comparing the blood vessels to a theme park ride where oxygen molecules jump on and off of red blood cells. The 7 chapters explore cells and tissues, breathing and the circulatory system, the digestive system, the nervous system, the immune system and the reproductive system (quite tastefully done, I might add). Each page is dominated by Macaulay's lively colored pencil illustrations displaying body structures from a variety of imaginative viewpoints. After you pore over the picture, a paragraph or two on explains the inner workings of the subject. I love the illustrations of enlarged body structures with a small walkway or railing in the foreground where people are standing and staring. These define the book as a whole rather well; it's not an anatomy atlas or encyclopedia. It's a very visual tour through the systems of the human body that shows readers "how it works" and what those amazing systems at work inside of us would look like if we could really shrink ourselves and take a field trip. 336 pgs, hc. - Jess

Recommended for use with Apologia's Human Body: Fearfully and Wonderfully Made 1st Edition, although with the most recent revision of the coloring book, the page numbers no longer match up. This is very thorough, with over 160 coloring pages. With the revision to the 4th edition, the once-cluttery pages have been expanded to two-page spreads with most of the text on one page and the illustration(s) to color on the facing page. Other changes include reorganization of some topics and some updates to the text and terminology. Compared to the Kaplan and Princeton Review books, the drawings and information are a bit more detailed. This coloring book also seems more advanced than the other two, appropriate for high school or college students while the Kaplan book seems more appropriate for junior high or high school. Also includes an index and detailed glossary. - Melissa

As part of my college studies, I took two anatomy and physiology classes. Anatomy and physiology are very closely linked because anatomy (the structure of any given part) shows what the physiology (function or movement) will be. Studying anatomy and physiology, I have often been fascinated by the design of our bodies. This hefty book provides a very thorough and easy-to-understand approach to understanding complex systems. Chapters cover a general introduction to anatomy and physiology, chemical basis, cells and cell physiology, tissues, the integumentary system, bones and joints, the skeletal system, muscle physiology, muscles, the nervous system, the special senses, the endocrine system, blood, the cardiovascular system, the lymphatic and immune systems, the respiratory system, the digestive system, metabolism and nutrition, the urinary system, fluid, electrolyte, and acid/base balance, and the reproductive systems. Very complete, with questions and quizzes at the end of every chapter to test your understanding. ~ Megan

Remember those kid dictionaries you enjoyed so much as a child - with parts labeled for identification? Well, Dorling Kindersley has produced a wonderful, illustrated, diagrammatic dictionary for older children and adults to savor! This, of course, is much more detailed - literally taking apart the body piece by piece. It's a fascinating process, beginning with the complete specimen, then breaking it down and identifying each part. Clear crisp photographs and illustrations are fascinating to view and better than a microscope for some of the tiny details. Definitely a quencher for the curious! You'll be referring to these again and again in your studies of anatomy and body systems. The pictures are not revealing, but there are a couple of places where body systems are superimposed over the female body, which some may object to.

More meat on the bones of this book than to Gray's Anatomy Coloring Book. 324 pages (versus 127 in Gray's) contain detailed anatomical drawings on the right-hand page, with explanatory text on the opposing page. Text is more detailed and more seriously presented than in Gray's. Organization is by major body system; this organization and the index in the back make finding particular body parts easy. Gray's is not as well organized. Level of detail in the drawings is similar in both books. If your student is serious about learning the human body, this is the one to choose.

Similar in some ways to See Inside Your Body, also by Usborne, this book is packed with more flaps to lift and geared for a slightly younger reading level. In thirteen study pages the book covers digestion, the circulatory system, bones and muscles, the brain, the senses, growing and healing. Most topics are presented on facing pages, with a combination of large and small cartoonish illustrations (all captioned), and flaps integrated on most of them. On the spread about the brain, much of the spread is devoted to a large illustrated flap with the brain, covered with small cartoons of what the different parts of the brain are responsible for. When you lift the main flap, you see an example of what happens when your body sends your brain a message, complete with numbered steps and a line to trace with your finger. The edges of the pages are filled with small illustrated flaps that introduce other facts about the brain: how it is made up of two halves, how the skull protects the brain, how much the brain weighs, etc. To add to the fun, many of these flaps are "nested" with additional flaps hiding underneath with even more information, and occasionally other pull-tabs and pop-ups incorporated as well. Little hands and eyes will find lots to explore here. – Jess

This Janice VanCleave book follows the format of her other books with easy to understand explanations and line drawings. However, while her other books are based around experiments, there aren't as many in this book. It is more of a learning book to teach about the different aspects of the body. But there are activities, thought provoking questions, and experiments mixed in throughout the book for kids to work through while they gain a better understanding of how the body functions. - Melissa

Dr. Paul Brand, renowned surgeon, and Philip Yancy, celebrated journalist and author, explore the marvels of the human body and compare it to the Biblical metaphor of the body of Christ. This book will have you thinking about your body and the Church in whole new ways. With great scientific detail, the book explores cells, bones, skin, and motion. Very detailed aspects of the human body are applied to the body of Christ for equally descriptive and impressive metaphors about how Christians should act. Bible verses and passages are interspersed throughout the book to support the metaphors. The book shares stories about Brand's experiences in India as a leprosy specialist and correlates these stories and the things he learned about the human body and disease to conditions that can be found in the Church. The discussion about cells includes metaphors about church members, diversity, worth, unity, and more. The bones section talks about the "backbone" of Christianity, the laws God set forth, and discusses hardness, freedom, growth, adapting, and more. The skin segment talks about visibility, perceiving, compliancy, loving, and more. The motions section discusses movement, balance, dysfunction, and more. Lots of interesting scientific facts about the body are included, but the best part of this book is the amazing insights it shares about how the structure of our bodies shows us how the Body of Christ should function. Great for both science and religious reading. 214 pgs, pb.

This is a great introduction to the human body and its systems. You'll remember more using this right-left brain approach as you color the pictures of the systems while you read about the body. The book uses selected drawings from the med school classic, with various parts of each drawing identified. The detailed drawings are included on the right-hand page, with text on the opposite page describing how the parts function and where they are located. The text is simple and shares essential details so students from middle school to high school will understand the basics of how the body works. Skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular, digestive, and reproductive systems are all covered in a basic and easy to understand way. 128 pgs, pb.

I think "adventure" was a good choice of words to include in this whirlwind tour of the human body! This full-color, lively guide takes readers system by system through the human body, incorporating diagrams, detailed anatomy illustrations, facts, physical activities, and pencil-and-paper activities. Nine chapters cover the skeletal system, muscular system, nervous system, circulatory system, respiratory system, digestive system, eyes, ears, taste and smell. Each section is several pages long, and moves from the general to the more specific in content, and wraps up with activities. In the skeletal system section, readers can examine a fully labeled skeleton, with common and anatomical names for the bones and bone groups, and read facts about our bones. The next page zeroes in on the spine, shows how the spinal bones are put together, and shows how bones support our body and protect it. The last page on bones discusses bone growth, and shows the different parts of a bone using a detailed bone diagram and a blown-up cross-section of bone. The activities for the bone section include a word puzzle using bone terminology, a match between common and scientific bone names, a word problem that asks students to try to figure out how tall they may get, and a list of places on your body you can touch to feel the different bones and joints that are hidden underneath. Although the pages are pretty busy, the book quality is excellent, and the detailed anatomy drawings are terrific. I also like that the activities and "side-bars" apply anatomy topics to kids, so they can "experience" for themselves, and think about anatomy in terms of their bodies, not just from a drawing in a book! - Jess

You've probably looked at or used an anatomy coloring book with your students, but this book takes the quality to a new level. This coloring book has a hardcover, 52 illustrations to color on thick durable pages, and a lot of information. The idea behind the book is that you will remember the material better if you make an association between the information and coloring a picture of the topic. The book is divided into chapters which include terminology, skin, skeletal, muscular, taste, head, brain, nervous, endocrine, lymphatic, cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, urinary, reproductive, and immune systems. The illustrations are anatomically correct and include scientific labeling. Two pages are devoted to each topic with one page of information which also includes '10 things to remember' for every topic and 1 page of illustrations to color. While these don't have all of the detail you might find in some other anatomy coloring books, they are still detailed enough to be used as a supplement for any high school curriculum. This 128-page book also includes high-quality colored pencils (Faber Castell 8 color set), an eraser, and sharpener. A 52-question, fill-in-the-blank quiz is found at the conclusion of the book along with answer key and a full-color guide to the illustrations to be colored in the book. I know this book is intended for high school, but I think you could probably use it with junior high as well. The information is in an easy-to-read format and the book with materials is easy to transport with the built in pencil case. Use it as a ready reference, study tool, or reinforcement as you color a visual reminder. - Donna
