Here’s the book that started it all! It’s the late 1870’s, and young Laura and her family are living in a log house deep in the Wisconsin woods. It begins with stories of the long winter, kept cozy by Pa’s stories and fiddle music at the end of each day. When spring comes, Laura and her family enjoy a dance, a beautiful summer, and a bountiful harvest, their days filled with hard work and good times as always. This book spans about a year of Laura’s childhood.

Maybe the term "relationship homeschooling" is new to you or maybe you have heard it tossed about on the internet, but just don't have a good sense of what it means and how it may affect your homeschooling or parenting journey. Before you read any further, I must share honestly, that this review may be biased. I say this from the heart as a veteran homeschool mom, whose homeschool journey was radically changed by the precepts within these pages. I stumbled upon a series of homeschool encouragement seminars in our area presented by the author, and my heart was greatly encouraged. But more than that, I went home a changed Momma. No longer focused on the externals, I began to look at the heart of my children.

Now that is out in the open, let me step back and try to share why I feel this book should be in the hands of every homeschool mom. Is it because of the earth-shattering message or great writing style? No. Is it because of the cautions she presents about being Berean's in today's homeschooling and Evangelical Christian culture? No. While these are all valuable to the reader, the significance of this book is found in the essence of "One Anothering." What is "one anothering," you ask? One Anothering is the profoundly simple concept that as parents, we view our children as brothers and sisters in the Lord and treat them with the respect and dignity set forth in the New Testament "One Another" verses: love one another, forgive one another, encourage one another and so forth. In this book Karen weaves together scripture and stories of her personal journey in parenting and homeschooling along with questions for introspection and discussion, all designed to leave you flooded with a sense of relief that you can succeed at homeschooling with the joy God intends for us. Excellent for individual or a small group study. Scripture from various versions. 288 pgs, sc. ~Deanne

Sudoku puzzles have exploded in popularity in recent years, and this product allows you to enjoy the logical puzzles with colors instead of numbers. Instead of using numbers from 1-9, Colorku uses nine differently colored wooden marbles on a large wooden board. The high-quality wood board measures 13.5" x 13.5" and is divided into nine rows, nine columns, and nine 3 x 3 squares. It has 81 wood marbles in 9 vibrant colors. The board and marbles are covered with a plastic tray that holds the balls on the board when storing, and flips over to serve as a ball holder while playing. The board comes with 100 different puzzle cards that come in four different difficulty levels and tell players where to place the first few marbles. The solution to each puzzle is achieved when the player ends up having one and only one of every color ball in each of the nine rows, columns, and 3 x 3 squares. Solutions are included. There's even a color conversion card that shows you how to alter any Sudoku puzzle from any book or news-paper and solve it using your Colorku board. Think the 100 puzzle cards that come with the game won't be enough? Luckily, there are a few Expansion Packs, which offer additional puzzle cards at a variety of levels. Each pack offers 100 puzzles with solutions. The Beginner Puzzles are fairly simple, the All Level Puzzles offer puzzles for four different difficulty levels, and the Advanced Puzzles will drive you crazy. The durable wooden game and fun yet challenging puzzles will be enjoyed by new and old Sudoku fans alike. ~Rachel

For those of you who want to teach using the classical method, the authors of this book, Harvey and Laurie Bluedorn, have long believed and implemented this in their own homeschool. In this book they combine their knowledge and experience to present a spiritual and philosophical foundation and a practical program for Christian homeschooling in the classical style. The first four chapters discuss the reasoning and logic of teaching with classical education, a discussion of why parents should be in charge of their students' education, problems with classroom (public) schools, and an explanation and description of what the trivium is. The next three chapters study one element of the trivium each - language, logic, and rhetoric. Each chapter presents the topic, arguments for teaching it, guidelines for teaching, where to start, what children should be learning at appropriate age levels, and other tips and advice for incorporating these core subjects. Chapter eight follows the same basic format, delving into the study of literature. In chapter nine, the Bluedorns offer principles for the study of historical literature. The following chapter provides lots of advice and help for different methods and approaches to homeschooling in light of the trivium, such as the Charlotte Mason approach, unschooling, unit studies, and others. Part two of the book, The Practical Trivium, hold chapters listing things children should do at particular ages - ten things to do with students before age ten, ten through twelve, thirteen through fifteen, sixteen through eighteen, nineteen and onward, and finally the last chapter, Life's Goals Begin at Home. Appendix one includes 16 different articles discussing the trivium, education, and other related issues. Appendix two provides an thorough resource list, outlining general resources and those for language arts & English, rhetoric, literature, history, government, law and economics, languages, mathematics, logic, Bible and theology, philosophy, science, art and music, and other miscellaneous resources. While you may not agree with all of the personal philosophy in this book, if you want to teach from the trivium and are looking for a guide to implement a classical education in your homeschool, this is a very complete and thorough guide from experienced authors. - Melissa
