How would you score on a Civics exam? What about the U.S. Naturalization test? This book gives you the chance to find out. A valuable reference for anyone wishing to "brush up" on their knowledge of American government, history, and civics, the book begins with two civics tests: the Intercollegiate Studies Institute Civic Literacy Exam and the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services Naturalization Test. The rest of the book focuses on topics that should be common knowledge to all Americans: the naturalization process, an American history timeline, and an overview of how U.S. government works at the federal and state/local levels. There is also a historical documents section with the text of the Declaration of Independence, Articles of the Constitution, Bill of Rights, and Gettysburg Address. Other short chapters hold quotes from notable Americans, a breakdown of the Armed Forces, lists of holidays and Presidents/Vice Presidents, brief stories of Americans that have made a difference, information on volunteering, and other information relevant to U.S. citizens. The back of the book includes a glossary, fun facts about America, and a list of civic resources and organizations with website addresses. 162 pgs, pb. ~ Lisa

Dinah Zike's series keeps growing. This book covers the highlights of world history from ancient times to the current day, but with an emphasis from 1700 onwards. Along with the historical highlights of each geographical area, a whole page of suggested activities using foldables is listed: research, cause and effect, reading, compare and contrast, listing, explaining, investigating, locating, and more. The book begins with a general introduction to foldables, which are used in the same way as in item #003016, above. The same basic folding instructions and fold types are detailed, but with a few new ones included. See the above item or other "Big Book of…" items elsewhere in the catalog for more details on foldables. This book also includes a section of reproducible world history graphics, timelines, and maps. ~ Zach

Divided into seven chronological sections with dates arranged in columns according to geographic location, this vibrantly illustrated book helps children (and parents!) “connect the dots,” putting worldwide events into their historical period. For example, did you know that Homer composed the Iliad and Odyssey in Europe during 800 BC, while the Hindu religion spread into Southern India that same year? Or that during the American Civil War (1860-1865 AD), the World’s first underground railway was built in London (1863), and Italy was unified? There is so much to learn in this fascinating book! Timeline begins in 10,000 BC and ends 1996. Beautifully illustrated. 128 pgs, hc. ~ Deanne

Fantastic... but there’s much more than timeline here! The timeline itself (folding out to 11 feet from the front cover) is packed with information. Starting from the beginnings of Israel (Biblical history) and continuing to modern Israel, significant events of Jewish history and culture are placed in the context of European, Mid-Eastern and world events. Dating uses the Gregorian and Jewish calendar equivalent from 3761 BCE to 2010 CE. Secondly, the timeline’s reverse side contains articles on Judaism, Jewish history, customs, etc. Finally, a 35-page book attached to the back cover includes detailed information on persecution, Jewish influences in the arts in the USA and Europe, Zionism, Israeli Wars, Arab conflicts, etc. This is an excellent, concise resource for Biblical, cultural or historical studies. hc. ~ Ruth

A biblical timeline – and beyond. Way beyond. Biblical history – from Adam through the life of the Apostle John – as well as the parallel world history is presented in timeline form on oversized (12 x 17), accordion-folded, expanding panels. Based on the biblical chronology compiled by Archbishop Ussher in the seventeenth century, the interpretation is traditional. Well-organized and highly detailed, biblical and world events can be located quickly. Corresponding detailed world history means you can just as quickly put those biblical events into world history perspective. The sixteen panels can be viewed in book form (hard cover) or drawn out and spread to provide a stunning view of continuous history. But there's more! Timeline information covers ten of the panels, but the remaining twenty (fifteen front and back) are a compendium (accompanied with illustrations and maps) of detailed and interesting information including History of the Bible in translation, distribution of the nations after the flood, Holy Land maps, the Jewish captivities and ancient Jerusalem, the New Testament World, The Ten Commandments, The Lord's Prayer, Old Testament information, Moses and the Exodus, Kings, Conquerors and Prophets, Wars and Battles, New Testament information, information about Jesus Christ and the Apostles. The actual timeline information was first published many years ago and there have been numerous re-publications, the most current being the Adams' Chart or Map of History. This one is smaller and more focused. It's THE reference you'll come back to over and over. ~ Janice

Simple Gifts is a teaching guide for anyone who works with children and especially helpful for home schooling as a checklist-driven method for organizing and simplifying the daily effort. The guide could be called "a crash course in home schooling" or "an executive summary for busy teachers" or "a way to make home schooling simple and organized." The author took the overwhelming body of research and advice about education and distilled that down to essential principles and activities, thus giving the home schooling parent peace of mind that all fundamental skills are being developed. It is written in a conversational style but is succinct, respecting the valuable time of its busy readers. Its main purpose is to help parents and other teachers re-evaluate their goals, organize, simplify their lives, and gain peace of mind that they are working efficiently. The guide provides three key checklists for the teacher that address not only academic instruction, but also character education and the fostering of healthy habits. These checklists can serve as a daily organizer/planner for the teacher and student, no matter which curriculum is being studied, no matter which books are being read. The checklists help everyone rest assured that they are covering "all the bases." The guide also addresses the personal qualities and habits of the teacher that lead to success.

This guide covers all learning styles, is adaptable for all ages, abilities, and subjects, can be used in any educational setting, incorporates learning theory, and serves as a reminder to teach with variety. The guide also provides a set of graphic organizers, sample transcripts, grade records, progress charts, a history timeline, a vocabulary card template, a phonics phoneme chart for review or remedial work, a list of recommended materials, and lists of questions for problem solving, writing, and taking tests, all of which may be photocopied by the purchaser for instructional use. ~ Caryl Schlicher/Author
