Fractions in equations can sometimes be very difficult for students to understand. Using the HandsOn Equations method, students can systematically learn how to solve equations that contain fractions. This set is intended for one student and includes a set of red and green number cubes, a flat laminated scale, set of plastic fraction blocks, Level I and Level II lesson books (12 lessons total), reproducible worksheets and answer key. These are the same number cubes and laminated scale used in the HandsOn Equations System. Each worksheet has 8 equations, 4 from the current lesson and 4 from previous lessons. The lessons build systematically, so you will want to do them sequentially. For your kinesthetic, visual students, this is a wonderful tutorial for better understanding fractions in the setting of equations. ~ Donna

Algebra can be a very difficult course for many students who don't think abstractly. This book offers stepbystep, visual exercises using a balance scale to help with the understanding of 'balancing equations.' Similar to the format of the rest of the Balance Math series, this book additionally offers explanations and instruction for each step of the equation process. For example, the first page shows a balance scale that is level, having a 20 on the left pan and a square containing an x on the right pan. This would indicate that the two are equal. The next illustration shows a balance scale with the square containing the x on the left pan and a question mark (?) on the right pan. To the right of the illustrations is a box with these words, "From the 1st scale we know: 20 = x. Reversing the sides of an equation does not change its value. Therefore, x = 20 =?" Along with the verbiage is a fillin box where the student will answer "? = ____." The problems are presented as puzzles that engage and really make a student think, and progress from simple to complex. Some reviewtype pages are placed intermittently throughout the book just to make sure your student understands and can apply concepts. The back of the book offers tips for working with the balance scale visuals, and answers with explanations. The method used for teaching the steps of equations and solving them reminds me a little of the HandsOn Equations products. This would be a super introduction to algebra for younger children, a great tutorial for someone having difficulty with equations, or helpful practice for anyone wants to keep their skills sharp. "A Conversational Handbook for the Thoroughly Befuddled." Yup, that's what it's like, alright. Just like a friend to help you through those "hard times" in math. This book kindly takes you by the hand and incrementally, stepbystep and question by question, teaches you the whys and hows of algebra. The book is even formatted to appeal to algebraically turnedoff students, sympathetic to their predicament, but ready to "deal with it". The selfteaching, selfpaced text has received accolades from students, teachers and publications ranging from Home Education Magazine to The Washington Times. Every page, or bitesized "minilesson" is presented in question and answer format. There are five "types" of pages (designated by muted graphic): Mind Munchies (introduce/explain concepts), Bare Bones (information to memorize cold), Step by Step (how to do it), Pitfall (common mistakes/misunderstandings to avoid), and Target Practice (practice problems) plus QuikCheck problems (boxes on these pages with just a few problems to make sure students grasp the concept taught on the page). These are gathered into 12 content sections: Properties, Sets of Numbers, Positive & Negative Numbers, Order of Operations & Like Terms, Absolute Value, Exponents, Radicals, Factoring, Cancelling, Equations, the Coordinate Plane, and Word Problems. The new 2nd Edition of this book also includes a final chapter on Advanced Algebraic Word Problems (additional questions and solutions for this chapter are not found in the 1st edition workbook, but links are provided to find this material online). Altogether they constitute a complete Algebra I course. You can use this book as an Algebra I text (especially good for math or algebraphobic students) or as a comprehensive reference for students who are using another algebra program, but have difficulty understanding certain concepts.

Understanding fractions is often one of the toughest concepts for children to conquer. Sure, they pick up halves, quarters and wholes easily, but transferring that understanding to numbers larger than 1 often presents a challenge. This vital set builds upon children’s basic understanding and teaches them how to work out the fractional part of any given quantity. For example, find 3/4 of 20 or 4/6 of 30. Best of all, it does not ‘tell them’ how to solve the fractional equation, rather it shows them how and gives them opportunities to master the concept through hands on activities! Set includes color coded foam shapes to make 5 polygons: circle, rectangle, square, pentagon and hexagon. Five foam dice are color coded to match polygons; 20 fraction cards (1/2 6/6) and 36 plastic pegs are included. The enclosed instruction pamphlet provides 3 levels of guidance. In stage 1, Understanding Basic Fractions, children use cards and polygons to solidify basic understanding. In Stage 2, Fractions of Quantities, children use fraction cards, die and polygon to solve equations involving fractional quantities. Stage 3 summarizes Support and Reinforcement. Excellent resource to help children “see’ and master fractional quantities. Cardboard box for storage included. ~ Deanne

Stephen and I got plenty of math practice and had a lot of fun playing this game. We both enjoy math (as do the Whozits), competitive games, and games that rely on some strategy rather than all luck. This game has it all. Players (26) are each dealt 7 cards from a (large) deck containing numbers, operations, special "blue" cards and special "red" cards. Each player in turn attempts to make the highest possible score using cards in his hand. Points are awarded for the equation total and for each operation used. He can also play any special blue cards. There are five different ones that double the points; give an extra turn; can be used as any number or operation; may become ANY blue, red, number or operation card (Super Card); or STOP the action of a red card. Once the player is done, he asks, "Who's Counting?" The first player to respond, "I'm Counting" can counter with a red card (of course, this interchange isn't necessary with just two players). There are four different ones which can turn the value of any equation played into a negative (ouch!), steal the score and give it to the player with the lowest score, split the points evenly between the two players, or cancel all the points scored in that turn. Four of the red cards in the deck have an additional green goo symbol making them impervious to the blue STOP card. Otherwise, if the equationmaking player has a blue STOP he can use it now to nullify the action of the red card attack. After points are scored, the player discards the equation and draws additional cards so he again has seven. If a player is unable to make an equation, he can trade in some or all of his cards instead. On the other hand, if he can use all seven cards in his hand, he scores an extra turn. Additional rules are contained on the handy leaflet which also tells the complete Whozit story. Score sheets are provided. The game is quick to learn and different each time played, making it an enjoyable and preferable resource for practicing math operations.

This mini balance provides handson instruction in addition and subtraction, and could even be used for equations involving multiplication/division. For addition and subtraction concepts, you can begin by hanging the blue weights in various yellowpeg positions on one side, and balancing the sum on the other side. So, for example, if you hang a blue weight in the 10position on one side, you can create balance by hanging a blue weight in the 6 and 4position on the other side (6 + 4 = 10). Students can think through and try all the possible combinations that could work, not limiting themselves to only two weights on the one side. That will keep them busy for a while, and you may want to have them write down their answers in logical order to make sure they haven't overlooked any possibilities. Subtraction follows, as students try to determine where the missing blue weight should go (10 – 4 = ?). Multiplication occurs when multiple weights occupy a certain peg (2 weights at the 2 position is 2 x 2 = 4, so one weight in the 4position on the other side creates a balanced equation). Your equations can get even more complicated: what if you have a 3 and a 4 on one side and three 2's on the other? What do you need to add to make it balance, and where? The scale is not super precise in its ability to be perfectly calibrated, but little plastic weights are provided so that the calibrated accuracy will be sufficient for your purposes. ~ Caryl

Chemistry is one of those difficult areas for the homeschooled student to compete effectively with their public school peers if Mom or Dad don't have much background except what they may (or may not!) have picked up in high school or college years ago. I think it's helpful to have a resource on hand that can provide a simple, direct explanations and examples of chemical problems, so they can look these things up when struggling through a textbook chemistry program. That's why I like these "Easy Way" books. They're large (this one at nearly 450 pages), they contain logically organized, and easytofind information to explain concepts, and then include a wealth of endofchapter review questions to offer the student more practice. They're designed to help the student struggling in a particular area, and they really break down concepts and examples, and provide the tools to challenge themselves to push ahead in that area. Chemistry contains 16 informationpacked chapters on topics such as chemistry basics, atomic structure, bonding, chemical formulas, gases, chemical calculations and moles, phase changes, chemical reactions and their rates, chemical equilibrium, acids/bases/salts, oxidation/reduction, electrochemistry, organic chemistry, nucleonics, and more. Throughout the chapters, chemical equations are worked out to illustrate the concept, and many more are found at the endofchapter review, primarily in multiple choice form. At the end of the book are five practice tests as well as answers with explanations and a worksheet to analyze your performance. These will help pinpoint areas that you need to work on as well as areas you already understand. Following these are a collection of reference charts and tables, a periodic table, and a glossary. From someone who's had four semesters of collegelevel chemistry, it's apparent that this book covers a lot of bases, and the student who takes the time to use this tool and takes the time to understand the concepts will not only find high school chemistry a breeze, but they'll have a much firmer grasp on college chemistry as well.
