Not everyone can pick up a pencil and produce an essay easily. A graphic organizer is a tool to help kids brainstorm ideas for writing. Getting the ideas out and then seeing them on a chart gives students an in-between step to putting ideas into writing. These are large, colorful, and reusable with a dry-erase marker. 5 brightly-colored write-on/wipe-off organizers include a Venn Diagram (2 overlapping circles, a T-Chart (two-sided list format – think pros and cons) a KWL chart with 3 columns to show what you know, what you want to know, and what you have learned, a story board that looks a little like a comic strip with a flow of six boxes, and a concept map with a large bubble in the middle and smaller bubbles branching of it, also known as a story web. These can be used to sequence events, brainstorm, look for commonalities and differences, analyze reading selections, etc. They are a fun way to explore topics you will be writing about and most kids enjoy the interaction as you come up with ideas. With all your ideas visually organized, the writing process will have a fine jump-start. 18" x 24". ~ Sara

Students of all ages can sometimes have difficulty coming up with ideas for writing. Scholastic tries to offer some support in this area with 40 Writing Prompts with Graphic Organizers. Descriptive, narrative, expository, and persuasive prompts are found in these pages that are intended to spark the imagination and improve writing skills. Each prompt is one page in length and the graphic organizer is the second page. Within the prompt students will find background information for their task and how to brainstorm the different elements. Subjects range from creating your own superhero to writing about your strangest dream. Steps and elements are laid out in the prompt and in the graphic organizer so students have guidance throughout the process.

The front of the book is of special interest to parents and teachers, as it explains not only how to use this book, but how to take a student from rough draft to final draft. The book is reproducible for classroom and family use and also offers a 'story sequence' page, a writing checklist, and a page to help students score their own writing. Help your students write with confidence and imagination. ~ Donna

This resource book details how to use anything from CD sleeves, to letter and business envelopes, to manila envelopes (from 2” x 4” to 12” x 15”) as learning tools. Repurpose envelopes for projects, study guides and daily work. Dinah is a master at repurposing—even reusing envelope clasps. Learn how to make 3 dimensional “foldables” such as display cases, cubes, shutter-fold displays, picture frames, accordion folds and pocket projects. Why do all this? Dinah says that in doing so children are not merely learning to recycle, but they are also practicing collaboration, problem solving, and synthesizing using kinesthetic and visual manipulatives. The basic principal of this book is project-based learning (PBL). The learning occurs as the student creates the project: researching topics and building to present to others. For example, in literature class, study different points of view and then make a trifold display. Show examples of muscle types in an accordion fold. Demonstrate integers on a cube. The author includes several pages of idea stimulators for different subjects such as listed above. She also shares how to make a “publishing center” for your classroom. The included DVD details each project type. Click on the icon next to the title to locate the appropriate video. An economical and hands-on approach tool for learning (and remembering!) a plethora of things.

What tools do you use when you read? Background music? Post-it notes? Highlighter? Do you like to read small chunks at a time? Or spend hours? Middle school and high school students are usually still figuring out exactly what tools work best for them – and if they need different tools for different types of reading. In a humorous, conversational manner written directly to the student, the reader has the opportunity to examine a myriad of tools that various people use to make reading more profitable. Each tool/skill is dissected and taken in small chunks with Let's Practice! exercises at regular intervals. Chapters conclude by asking the student to reflect on what he has learned followed by a collection of review questions labeled "Brain Ticklers." (Answers for these are on the following page.) For instance, the chapter on Different Types of Reading focuses on reading textbooks. Students are encouraged to start by looking at how the textbook is set up and then are given specific strategies for textbook reading. The SQ3R method (Survey, Question, Read, Record, Review) is covered thoroughly as well as the idea of using a textbook response sheet. And the book is packed with practical ideas for conquering reading skills – graphic organizers, helpful hints, and mnemonic devices, to name just a few. With reading passages and questions as well, this book is more than a supplement; rather, it is like a study skills class for the wanting-to-succeed student or the need-to-catch-up student. 210 pgs, pb. ~ Janice
