There are times when I pick up a new item and find myself saying "Wow I sure wish this was around when I was being homeschooled!" I loved maps and geography. Actually, I still do. So when I had the opportunity to explore this program, I was very excited. The concept is very simple: these are PDF maps that can be manipulated to show just what you need you can add or subtract names, borders, rivers, color, cities, and physical features at will. With the newest version, you can even edit maps in Adobe Reader and print them. This makes this a fantastic resource for many ages and skill levels and a really great value. There are four main map categories on the home screen: World, USA, Historical, and Thematic. The program includes 75 maps of the world, over 60 USA maps, over 150 historical maps and map sets from Mystery of History. When you click on "World" you are shown a world map with continents and oceans named. You can create a map at that level or click on one of the names to "zoom in" on a particular area. The next map, again, gives you the option to create a map or "zoom in" to get details on a couple of neighboring countries. There are only a couple of instances where the closest "zoom" will show an individual country (like New Zealand, Australia, Ireland/Northern Ireland), most show a continental region (like Southern Africa or Korean peninsula). The USA category can be explored by state or by region. In a similar manner to the countries, states are shown with their neighbors (though neighbors are only labeled with the state name and rivers if selected). The category for historical maps is further divided by time period: Ancient (Creation 33AD), Middle Ages (33 1456), Renaissance and Reformation (1457 1707), and Modern (1708 Present). Thematic maps include American history, Explorers, Native Americans, World Wars, Biblical Maps, 20th Century Treaties, and Chinese Dynasties. You can access different maps through several means. The first is the "zoom in" process described above. The second is via the left-hand navigation that pops up as soon as you select any category. This lists all of the major regions or time periods in the category so you can pick from the list quickly. The third way to access maps is via one of the alphabetical indexes unique to each of the four main categories.

The content doesn't end there. All of the maps used in Mystery of History volumes 1-4 and All American History volumes 1-2 are included in the program. When you select one of those volumes you can either scroll through all of the maps or use the left-hand navigation to find the required map. These maps are not customizable, but are presented as they would be used in the programs.

Another useful feature is the Teacher's Guide. The resources of the TG will be helpful for learning about this program as well as teaching geography in general: quick start guide, tutorial video, user manual, downloadable MP3 workshops on "Loving Geography" and "Packing a Punch with Timelines and Maps", and several lessons adapted from the book "Hands-On Geography": 50 bright ideas for using outline maps, the 5 themes of geography, how to make a salt-dough map, history and geography, 16 easy mapping projects, and Joseph's Journey.

As far as supplemental geography resources go, this one is fantastic in scope and depth. With over 350 different maps and the ability to customize as needed, you can incorporate maps and geography into any lesson with ease. Compatible with Windows through Windows 10 or Mac and requires Adobe Reader 12.0 or higher. ~Zach

I love it when a fun foreign language book has pronunciation help. This one uses common pronunciation guidance like: le papier [leh papp-yay], la rue [lah roo] and la cerise [lah seh-reez] rather than the more formal International Phonetic Alphabet. What this means to you is that you can introduce your young child to French without being fluent yourself. Colorful, themed pages have scenes with dotted empty spaces where you can place the stickers. Then you have a cute vocabulary book to read and practice with. There are 7 (2-pg) scenes and 4 pages of colorful stickers. 8.5” x 11”. ~Sara

This is my favorite name-brand bilingual dictionary! While larger, more cumbersome versions exist, the pocket Larousse offers the best of quick reference in a portable format. Includes modern language of 150,000 words, expressions and translations. You can even look up a form of a verb and see the infinitive, an especially helpful feature for students. It includes both French/English and English/French with phonetic guidance. Beginners will usually look up an English word in the Eng/Fr side, while more advanced students will use the Fr/Eng more. As the Frenchy here in the office, I have this one on my desk. Copyright 2001, 969, pb. ~ Sara

I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of this CD-ROM product from eMedia. The program is so thorough and complete, with so many extras. It is designed for someone with no prior knowledge, and seems as though it would be extremely easy to pick up and begin with - very user friendly.

The program consists of six chapters, each divided into several lessons (165 in all). The first chapter starts out with the basics - how to use the various features of the program, types of guitars, stringing and tuning your guitar, finger positioning, chord reading. After you know all that, you get right into the music. You continue learning chords, which are clearly pictured and well described, with one accompanying song and/or exercise to practice. The chords used are always pictured on the same screen. As you learn more chords, the songs involve more chords and there are practice exercises for changing chords smoothly. After every few chords you learn, there is a quiz and an exercise incorporating them. As you get further into the course, there are lessons to educate you in other aspects of the guitar, such as accents, syncopation, double strumming, and notation. By the end of the sixth chapter, you will be able to play over 50 songs of varying styles, including hymns, blues, classics, rock, and other genres. Most of the songs in the lessons are classic examples, such as "Greensleeves," "Amazing Grace," and "Skip to My Lou," but there are a variety of other songs too, i.e. "Downtown Train," "Rock Steady," and "La Bamba."

As if these lessons don't sound wonderful enough, there are many additions worth mentioning. First, three different buttons are displayed on many of the screens. One is a picture of a video camera. When you click on this feature, a box pops up with the instructor and his guitar, and he talks and shows you what he is doing. This provides a helpful visual for some of the harder concepts, such as strumming, new chords, accents, and double strumming. Next, there is a button with a person shown speaking. Clicking this button allows you to hear the instructor offer short tips and practical suggestions. The last button is my favorite. The audio button appears by all of the songs and exercises. When you click this, the music is played through slowly so that you know what it sounds like and you can play along with it. The chords flash red as they are played so you can follow along. Sometimes the instructor suggests ways to embellish this feature, such as playing in rounds with the audio clip. Yet another added bonus is an animated fret. When you play the audio clip, a picture of the fret pops up, and the strings and fingers of the chords are highlighted as they are played so you can see what your fingers are supposed to be doing as you play. There is also a chord dictionary in case you want to see all of the chords or look up a particular one.

Also the program suggests list of songs that you can find on the internet at one site. Each time you learn some new chords, there will be a screen devoted to listing a collection of various songs using only those chords you've learned so far. There are so many additional songs here, I think this was one particularly good addition. If your computer has a microphone, other features will come in handy. You can play your guitar into your computer's microphone and it will record and play back the song so you can hear you play. A new instant feedback feature even highlights notes in green that you play correctly - as you play the song! The microphone will also allow the computer to help you with your tuning. An appendix at the end aids you in a further study of notes, sharps, key signatures, and other little tidbits of information. Is this great or what?

In summary, the sound quality is extremely good, very clear and easy to understand, and the lessons are incredibly simple and well laid out. The program is designed to use in lesson order, but someone who has some knowledge would be able to skip around and use a specific lesson to work on a practicing a particular skill. System requirements: Windows XP/Vista/Windows 7, 16 MB of RAM and 40 MB of free hard disk space; Mac OSX 10.4 or later, 16 MB RAM, 83 MB of free disk space.
