I love it when a fun foreign language book has pronunciation help. This one uses common pronunciation guidance like: le papier [leh papp-yay], la rue [lah roo] and la cerise [lah seh-reez] rather than the more formal International Phonetic Alphabet. What this means to you is that you can introduce your young child to French without being fluent yourself. Colorful, themed pages have scenes with dotted empty spaces where you can place the stickers. Then you have a cute vocabulary book to read and practice with. There are 7 (2-pg) scenes and 4 pages of colorful stickers. 8.5” x 11”. ~Sara

Sung by Marie-Louise Desange, a native of France, this collection of 20 songs will delight your little learners as they dance and play to the music! Songs are a fun way to get your children speaking a foreign language, even if they don't always know what they are singing. They can practice the sounds and imitate what they hear. A lyric booklet is included that also lists several vocabulary words in French & English, which you can use with your lessons or just to answer questions from your littles. Beginner vocabulary such as greetings, counting, body parts, weather, animals and more are all within the lyrics. ~Sara

Subtitled “From Elizabeth the First to the Forty-Niners,” this volume of Story of the World takes another good-sized bite out of world history. The forty-two chapters are told in a similar style to the first two volumes, with each chapter divided up into shorter readings of a couple pages each, just enough to grab most children’s attention and keep it until they begin to tire of history, and their minds begin to wander. And Susan Wise Bauer’s exciting and engaging way of putting the “story” back into history, chances are they may even be begging for more! Like the other volumes, she also does a terrific job of taking the typical “European” slant out of her telling of world history, while incorporating events and people from all over the world in her chronological presentation, giving children a much more “complete” picture than they would likely otherwise get. As with the other volumes, this book is not meant to cover everything in the time period, but to hit the high points and serve as a springboard to explore people, events, and eras more thoroughly as desired. Topics covered in Volume 3 include Japanese warlords, colonies in the “New World”, spread of slavery, the “Sun King” of France, English in India, imperialist China, revolutionary war, Captain Cook’s explorations, age of industrialism in Europe, Napoleon, French Revolution, Lewis & Clark, Mexican independence, Africa and colonialism, the Opium Wars, the Gold Rush, and much, much more.

The text is available in a paperback or spiral-bound version. The activity book is a bound paperback.- Jess

It's easy to become a cookbook collector. The glossy photos of scrumptious meals draw you in regardless of whether the recipes are easy or the ingredients are easy to find! Our intentions are good, but somehow we just can't get around to pulling together an incredible meal every night. Well, cookbook author Rachel Masters takes a much more practical approach, almost guaranteeing that this is one cookbook that will spend more time on the countertop than on the shelf. As a mom with young children, she was frustrated with the time it was taking to develop a meal plan and grocery list for the week. To make this easier, she created a plan that rotated through all of the main dishes her family enjoyed, along with shopping lists to accompany them. In the end she had a twelve-week plan, each week complete with five main dishes, a dessert, a snack, and a shopping list. After using her plan with much success over the years, she now presents it to the rest of us in handy cookbook form. The cookbook presents thirteen weeks, each with a meal plan for the week, a grocery list (divided into types of food like produce, dairy, etc.), and the recipes. Each week features five meals, a snack, and a dessert. Weeks are broken down by meal, with each meal including recipes for the main course as well as side dishes. As a bonus, Rachel has included a suggested timetable for each meal, outlining when each task preparation task should be done for a six o'clock target dinner time. At this point, you may be mostly concerned about the meals themselves. Will your family like them? Glancing over the meal plans, I'd say they have broad appeal (remember, the author has several young children herself!). A sampling of the meals includes: chicken fajitas, beef stew, lasagna, shepherd's pie, pork chops, sloppy joes, french dip sandwiches, ribs, chicken over rice, sub sandwiches, split pea soup, ham and cheese sandwiches, pork tenderloin, and many more scrumptious-sounding side dishes I don't have room to mention. You won't find anything too specialized in here, just family-pleasing favorites. Of course, if everyone in your family dislikes a certain recipe, just replace it with one of your own and edit the shopping list to include those ingredients.

Additionally, seven appendices include suggestions for breakfasts and lunches, using produce from your garden, recipes for special events and holidays, essentials for the kitchen, tips and ideas, making a few typically store-bought items from scratch, and some advice on family meal time (including suggestions to get children to try new things!). All in all, this is a great, practical resource for any busy mom struggling to shop and pull together meals each week! I know our family could have benefited from this approach when I was growing up! – Jess

Watch out for the shark! For basic play, all of the lower-case letter discs are placed face up on the board. The deck of cards (featuring upper-case letters as well as starfish, crabs, and sharks) is shuffled and placed face down. Players take turns flipping over a card. If it is a letter card, all of the players race to grab the matching lower-case disc.  Collect the most letters and you’ll win the game, but watch out for the various critter cards which add twists like stealing discs from other players and feeding discs to the letter-swallowing plastic shark that sits by the edge of the island. Two levels of play, for 2-4 players, ages 4-6. Directions are in English, French, German and Spanish.

    CHOKING HAZARD (1). Not <3yrs.

Beginning Spanish and French students will find much to discover in these fun DK kits. Each kit includes an book, flash cards, and an audio CD. The book really consists of three separate books, conveniently compiled into one volume. The three "books" are an Activity Book, Picture Dictionary Wordbook, and a Bilingual Dictionary. The Activity Book consists of 26 themed topics and introduces children to common phrases and basic vocabulary pertaining to everyday situations—such as greetings, school, or at a picnic. The lessons feature color photos of school-aged children (with bilingual speech bubbles), as well as colorful graphics, tips, and vocabulary games. The audio CD corresponds to each of the lessons, and students are encouraged to listen to the CD (to develop an ear for native dialogue and pronunciation) while they follow along in the book. The Picture Dictionary contains colorful photos of people, places and objects with the Spanish or French words (and English translations) written below. The Bilingual Dictionary contains translations for 2000 of the most commonly-used Spanish or French words. The flashcards consist of five sets of twelve flashcards covering food, clothes, objects, numbers and animals. The flashcards can be used to play the games in the Activity Book, or they can be used by themselves to study vocabulary words. While other scientists were catching and killing insects and classifying them based on physical characteristics, the 19th-century scientist and teacher Jean Henri Fabre was a firm believer in observing insects and nature in their natural habitats, spending just as much time watching their behavior as studying their anatomy. In this delightful book, he shares his observations and knowledge with children through a series of stories in which Uncle Paul describes the wonders of nature for his nieces and nephews, Claire, Emile, and Jules. With frequent questions and interjections from the children, Uncle Paul discusses livestock, trees, metals, fibers, paper, spiders, insects, weather, clouds, steam engines, astronomy, plants, mushrooms, shells, ocean creatures, and much more. If you enjoy the Christian Liberty Nature Readers or the Handbook of Nature Study, I think you'll enjoy this one as well. Originally published in 1917 and translated from French by Florence Bicknell, this reprint from Yesterday's Classics is 438 pgs, pb. - Jess
