This kit provides everything you need to learn how to manipulate fractions. The subtitle on the book says "Learn fractions in 42 ½ Days," which is great for those just beginning fractions or those struggling with fractions. 56 games and 17 worksheets are used to help students master addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of fractions, and introduce percents. This isn't a conventional approach to learning fractions, but it works well with more active learners. The kit includes the new (©2014) spiral-bound lesson book, spiral-bound worksheets book, two plastic Fraction Charts, Basic Number Card Deck, Multiplication Card Deck and Fraction Card Deck.

The Lesson book is divided into 42 ½ daily lessons. Each lesson begins by stating the day's topic or goal of the lesson, a list of what you will need, and instructions for teaching the lesson. There is an appendix at the back of 7 reproducible pages that need to be copied for some of the games.

The worksheets book is non-reproducible and contains 17 worksheets that are used with specific lessons and a certificate of achievement.

Three decks of cards are included in this kit. The Basic Number Deck includes 132 cards and is numbered from 0 to 10 – 12 of each number. The Fraction Deck holds 75 cards with 20 different fractions and 20 matching percent cards. The Multiplication Deck includes 100 cards from 1x1 to 10x10 (there are duplicates of some of the cards). All of these decks are used with game instructions found in the lessons.

There are 2 Fraction Charts made of durable, heavy plastic – one is whole showing the markings of all the different fraction bars, and the other is separated into the different parts. Directions for using these are included in the lessons and an instruction sheet is also included.

If you are already using RightStart Mathematics, you will notice that there is overlap of some of the games and content, as some of the lessons are pulled from levels D and E of the math program and some games from the Math Card Games Book. This is a perfect supplement for the student who might be a little more visual or hands-on and needs more fractions practice.

Word problems are difficult for many students because they don't understand what the question is really asking. Word Problems From Literature teaches students how to decipher each question and make sense of the problem. Using information from Mr. Popper's Penguins, Ben Franklin, Narnia, The Hobbit, and Lord of the Rings, students learn how to work problems using bar model diagrams as a visual manipulative. One-step and multi-step problems using multiplication, fractions, ratios, and algebra become a breeze when students learn how to apply the logical formula presented in this program.

The text for this series offers the reading content, and bar model diagrams illustrate the concept of the problem. A simple example is, "Mr. Popper had 78 fish. The penguins ate 40 of them. How many fish did Mr. Popper have left?" Bar modeling is explained in the front of the text and the workbook. Students learn two rules: The whole is the sum of its parts, and simplify to a single unknown. The information in the text explains in a very step-by-step fashion the process for solving. The questions posed in the text offer practice for the bar-modeling process to make solving word problems easier. The text includes answers to the problems. 100 pgs. Pb.

If you are familiar with the Singapore methodology, then you are familiar with model drawing or the ‘bar modeling method.’ This was a real eye-opener for me when I tried it several years ago, and it can be so helpful to your students in understanding and solving word problems. This book offers very clear explanations with modeling examples and practice, so that you can use this method with any math program you are using. This goal of modeling is to offer a visual for the context of word problems. Modeling bridges the gap between concrete and abstract by giving a visual or pictorial example. Work systematically through this book for a thorough understanding.

Start with the basics and apply the modeling method to whole numbers, fractions, decimals, rate/distance, ratio, percent, two unknowns, and algebra. There are 97 problems within these chapters, and, in some cases, may take two pages to explain the solution to the problem – very thorough and systematic! The author even suggests more than one way to solve the problem, when that is a possibility. At the end of section, there are practice problems for you to try. A final exam of ten problems is found at the end of the Word Problems section, and solutions with visual models for practice problems and final exam rounds out the book.

I’ve often wondered why no one taught this method when I was young, because it makes sense of word problems. Use this alongside your Singapore Math for more practice and clear explanations, or use it with your regular math program for an alternative explanation to solve difficult word problems. 153 pgs., p/b. ~ Donna

Here's a great tool for making your own math practice sheets. This CD-ROM includes characters for addition problems to 10, angles, basic math, clocks, counting beans, currency, division problems using the number 10, fraction circles and rectangles, measurement rulers, multiplication through 10, place value, seasons, subtraction through 10, and weather conditions and symbols.

The installation is pretty easy - simply pop the disc into your drive and it should install automatically. If it doesn't, there are instructions to help you out. When you are ready to make a worksheet, click on the 'format' button on your tool bar, click 'font,' and choose the type of practice you want for this project. There are some short cut suggestions offered in the front flap of your package, but I found it easier to use the 'insert' button on your tool bar. You will need to use a much larger font size (I used 72) if you are making the worksheet for a younger child. I also found that the only way I could tell what the coins were suppose to be for the currency symbols was to print them quite large. The time savings really comes in when you can just insert whole addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division problems, rather than making them up yourself. I also like that you can insert sections of the ruler (for measurement) and they will appear connected.

This CD is compatible with both Windows and Macintosh computers, and would be a real time and money savings for families or classrooms with a smaller budget. You can make just the worksheets you need rather than buying workbooks from which you will only use part of the pages.
