This drawing instruction book takes a "learn by doing" approach, offering a progression of drawing exercises to help the art student build his or her skills. It starts with the basics, introducing students to the tools used, providing warm-up exercises, and offering brief explanations of value before the first exercise – drawing a bowl of eggs. The lessons then progress through shape, form and use of shading to show the light source. Specific still life exercises are given that offer students opportunities to draw common objects that are made up of basic shapes. The exercises progress in difficulty here, from tennis balls and fruit (spheres) to boxes, cans of soda, funnels, bottles, light bulbs, household tools, and even a telephone. Movement, texture and pattern are emphasized in the last half of the book and exercises include drawing ribbons, stuffed animals, draped fabric, plants and other household objects that provide opportunities for practice. The last section of the book provides pointers on how to compose a still life, some questions for self-evaluation, a list of suggested art books, and a gallery of student work. Overall, it's an inexpensive and no-nonsense drawing guide. 52 pgs, pb. – Jess

While I am a little too young to remember Jon Gnagy, I can appreciate good art and good value! The kit includes a black-and-white 64-page instructional book, fifteen 12" x 18" sheets of drawing paper, a 12" x 18" drawing board, 3 sketching pencils, a carbon pencil, a kneaded eraser, a tortillion (or "stomp"), a piece of gray chalk, two pieces of black chalk, and a sandpaper pad. Armed with these materials, it's time to investigate the book, a short course in learning how to draw. The first pages focus on the basics: using your pencil, stomp, and chalk to make different tones. Then you practice drawing lines, shapes, and forms (3-D shapes). A "crash course" on composition and perspective follow. Then you jump into the lessons, which guide you in six or less steps to making a picture, complete with shading and texture. The steps are somewhat lengthy, with the goal being a very realistic, three-dimensional representation. Thankfully, the example drawing progresses with you. The lesson subjects increase in complexity, incorporating more complex shapes and a range of subject matter, including pumpkins, a steamboat, snow-covered landscape, a Great Dane, and a Mexican boy. The end of the book provides guidance on drawing the human figure in action. While I have some issues with the layout and readability of the book (all instructions are in three languages, which makes every page seem crowded), this is the only kit I have seen that includes all of your supplies, gets you up and running quickly, and emphasizes shading to produce a "finished" look. – Jess

Whether you’re a hobbyist in fine lettering, wanting to learn more about the medieval art form of illuminating letters, or hoping to de-stress from the hustle of modern day in ancient creativity, this beautiful little workbook is the key. Each page consists of faint, soft blue graph paper to help you practice and learn illumination with little step-by-step drawing tutorials and illuminating techniques along the way. There are also blank letterforms to get you started from “A” to “Z” as you progress through the pages, just add a mystical creature here, some swirling vine and arabesque motifs there, fill-in the letter with a beautiful base color, then add some detailed accents with a white gel pen, and voilá, you’re an illuminator! You’ll find full-color samples of illuminated letters sprinkled amongst the pages of the practice book to give ideas and inspiration. 160 pgs, 6.25” x 8.25” hc. ~ Emily

What a gem for a beginner drawer or a seasoned pro looking for a new perspective! This classic drawing book incorporates an art class into a book and so much more. Author Bruce Waldman is not only a master drawer and artist, but also a master teacher for more than 30 years. He has taken his drawing skills, classic Renaissance methods that have stood the test of time, and the approaches that work in his classroom and clearly presented them in this well-organized book that offers a rich and diverse look at drawing experiences and fundamentals.

His goal is for the reader to learn the basics (the four rules to drawing an object are presented immediately in the first chapter). With a little practice these basics become second nature (Bruce states that those with little experience can learn to draw well), and then he encourages everyone to reach inside of them self to discover their own unique form of creative expression. He understands the rules can be broken and should be at times, but gaining the knowledge of drawing basics first will then lead to stronger exaggeration and embellishment in one’s personal drawing style. This amazing book covers drawing fundamentals, elements of art and principles of design, portraiture, drawing animals and more. Please note there is a chapter on drawing the human form (which would be found at any university level drawing class) with some brief nudity - minimalistic gesture drawings without details. 160 pgs, sc. ~ Emily

This is a how-to book for a student who is seriously interested in learning to draw fashion. They start with creating a design space and what you should have in it. You go into drawing the human form and learning about true proportion and how to emphasize and exaggerate legs and such for fashion designing. There is a lot of time learning to draw someone mid-movement, which is really interesting. Then you focus on the facial features. This book really spends time on the individual features as well as the whole form. I liked the do’s and don’ts – super helpful! Now you’re ready to dress the figure - learn to draw flounces and ruffles, how clothing drapes on a body, and other clothing details before you move on to designing patterns and fashion accessories. The hats page looks like tons of fun to me! You could easily add this to a high school art program. A student can write/draw directly in the book as well as keep a separate portfolio. I think this would be a good reference tool too! 126pp ~ Sara

Mark Kistler, cartoonist and author of the ever-popular Draw Squad and Drawing in 3-D with Mark Kistler, has taught children to draw using his methods for years. In this book, he takes his fun, yet start-with-the-basics approach and offers it up to adults who think they can't even draw a straight line! He promises that yes, anyone can learn to draw if they set aside twenty minutes a day for a month. If you're game, you can grab any old pencil and sketchbook and embark on an adventure that will take you from drawing spheres to tackling the human face! I like the balance of simple form and more advanced skills he meshes together here. Although you begin by drawing a circle, you immediately turn it into a three-dimensional sphere by adding shading. So you skip that whole "drawing a straight line" thing and head straight into the world of 3-D. Lesson drawing subjects progress in difficulty, beginning with the basics: spheres and cubes. From there you build onto the cubes and spheres that you know, creating koalas, roses, cylinders, houses, rippling flags, pyramids, mugs, trees, rooms and cities in one-point perspective, buildings in two-point perspective, and the human eye and face. Each lesson goes step-by-step, with Mark's illustrations showing the student exactly what to add each time and his written instructions are clear, easy-to-follow and entertaining. Many of the lessons are reminiscent of those in Draw Squad, but the pace is a bit quicker, and the subject matter slightly more sophisticated. Lessons often end with a "Bonus Challenge" where you can take your new skill to the next level, and several examples from Mark's other adult students offer inspiration as well. Drawing supplies are minimal, although Mark makes suggestions and recommendations in several lessons. With its 30-day commitment and incremental lessons, I would recommend this one as an introductory drawing course for your high-schoolers, especially if they have not had much drawing instruction in the past.

Bang! Ka-Pow! Zoom! Other forms of onomatopoeia! It's rare to see two different artists collaborate in order to combine two vastly different styles within a single title, but Art of Drawing Manga & Comic Book Characters manages to hit all the essentials. The first section details essential techniques and tools to start creating from either genre. The next part delves into some of the tropes and conventions of manga, providing a crash course on example characters, the concept of manga's use of embellished expression to convey drama, chibi or super small characters and has quite a few hints on the use of Photoshop and other digital illustration software. The third segment is all about comic book super heroes, villains and the crazy situations they manage to get themselves into. This section includes tips on altering the anatomy of your characters to reflect a bulkier, lankier or larger frame, how to make the best of your panels and even advice on how the pros arrange their page layouts to give a scene the sense of action, suspense or even fear.

Artists Bob Berry and Jeannie Lee do a fantastic job of showcasing a wide variety of character designs and can explain their methods to comic and manga construction in a readily approachable manner. This book will interest the enthusiast and the casual artist of both forms of art. 144 pgs, pb. 12x9 in. ~ Nick

Using the Dyslexie© font designed specifically for dyslexic readers, this book teaches 30 Bible verses using repeated activities. Each Old or New Testament verse is tied to a theme like hope, gossip, enemies and faith (6 pages per verse). First, students color a drawing of Bible Bunny. Then, parents read the included verse and students use a dot-to-dot activity to form 3 letters (progressing in alphabetical order). Next, students trace a repeated, lighter image of Bible Bunny. Then, they draw a picture of the verse. Finally, they write down the Bible verse and what they are thankful for. Reproducible for single family use. 6”x 8”, 186 pgs, pb. ~ Ruth

C.S. Lewis' Chronicles of Narnia books are so rich in visual imagery and fascinating characters, it seems completely natural to incorporate art and crafts to bring the subjects to life. Thanks to Sharon Jeffus, you can easily do this, whether you're studying the books in school or just reading them for pleasure. In 56 pages, Sharon offers a variety of ways students can apply their own creativity to the subjects of Narnia, whether it be through pencil and paper, paint, clay, cardboard, or a craft project. Subjects examined are lions, heraldry, knights, armor, weapons, crowns, thrones, portraits, printing, rabbits, beavers, gargoyles, fauns, stags, trees, castles, birds, ancient writing, dragons, unicorns, and maps. Along the way, Sharon mixes in art concepts, including perspective, shading, using a grid, scale, and positive and negative space. Because the topics are chosen from the Narnia books, this is not a cohesive art program; rather, it's set up as a book you can wander through as you read through the Narnia books, choosing topics that suit your fancy. Topical lessons vary quite a bit in content, and may include a craft project, a drawing challenge, thought-provoking questions, creative challenges, a website to look up works of art, examining a given picture, learning an art principle, etc. The suggested activities are very open-ended, and would be easy to tailor to children of different ages. Occasionally, several different activity options are offered for a topic; some will appeal more to older children, and some to younger children. The instructions for an activity are very simple and freeform (more like suggestions), allowing as much adaptation as you want. As with their other very practical art books, you won't need any special art equipment for the lessons, just pencils, drawing paper, construction paper, glue, yarn, markers, crayons, and anything else you'd like to use. Also available is a CD-ROM which contains the entire text of the book in electronic form. If you're anxious to explore Narnia with all of your senses and sharpen your artistic skills at the same time, you'll enjoy using this book as an art companion.

Gobble up the stones like a hungry little goblin to be the player with the most points. This game is easy to play and is different each time you play. The game includes 9 double-sided board squares (5 x 5 colored and numbered grid squares), 100 colored tiles (20 each of 5 colors), a score pad, 4 tile racks, and a tile bag. Place the 9 board squares randomly in a 3 x 3 pattern to form one large playing board. Each player draws 5 colored tiles from the bag and places them on their rack. The first player (the youngest) places as many matching colored tiles as they can on the squares on the board either vertically or horizontally (a row of 2,3,4, or 5) and then draws new tiles so they have 5 again. Each square they covered is a stone that’s been “gobbled.” All other players then build off of the played tiles in Scrabble-like fashion. Simply add up the numbers on the squares you covered to determine how many points you got. The game ends when the tiles run out and one person is able to play their last tile.

Fast-paced and competitive, Link-O is all about taking names and taking cards. The basics of the game are simple: each player is dealt 13 cards (with 13 possible suits), and the remaining cards form a draw pile (with 6 face-up to give players a choice). The goal is to play as many cards as you can before anyone runs out. Players can put down sets of same-numbered cards, or just one, and earn points at the end of the game for all cards in front of them (minus points for cards left in your hand). But beware! If an opponent plays the same number of cards with a higher value, your cards are snatched! Your opponent then has the choice to take your current set of cards into his or her own hand or force you to discard your cards. Either way, you lose precious points in a fast-playing game. If you, however, have a higher set of cards then your opponent, you just might be able to return the favor…

This workbook is divided into two sections: the first contains the activities for learning and practicing mapping skills and the second contains outline maps of the entire world. The activity section starts off pretty simply – what is a map, map types, directional indicators, compass rose, map symbols, globes, hemispheres, and coordinates – and moves on to more advanced concepts as students move through the book – reading maps, labeling maps, locating places on a map, and longitude and latitude. The activity pages are all consumable (and reproducible for family/classroom use), and include a lot of fill-in-the-blanks and map reading/drawing exercises. There are 59 pages of outline maps included in the book – working around the globe in the form of continents, continental regions, and countries. Some of these maps are labeled, or numbered, but most are blank – and many also include directions for completing activities to test geographical knowledge. All of the answers are included in the back of the workbook.

Incorporating full color photos and childlike drawings, this first dictionary's layout is orderly and easily draws the reader's eyes across the page. On each two-page layout words are grouped according to interesting themes of importance to pre- and early readers. Topics start with "me," move to family and community, then nature, etc., then finish with key pre-K concepts such as colors, money, opposites, and action words. In each topic, words are used to form 2-3 sample sentences which include Dolch sight words. Some of the occupation pictures are caricatures: the scientist is "mad" and the farmer is slovenly. Combine the strategy of SET with the challenge of a crossword-type game, and you get SET Cubed! This game includes a 9x9 grid board, 42 dice printed with SET symbols, and a cloth bag. To begin, each player draws five dice, and everyone rolls them simultaneously. The first player to find a "SET" plays first, placing their three dice in the middle of the board. Subsequent players roll their dice, and try to make SETs between their dice, and the dice already on the board. Sets can be formed with each die added, so scoring can add up as a player adds one, then two, and then three dice to the board. "Wild" dice and bonus squares on the board add even more twists to the game! If you enjoy the SET card game and are ready for a new challenge, you'll love SET Cubed. If you're not familiar with SET, this is a good way to get the hang of making SETS, since each player has a turn and the action is a bit slower-paced! 2-4 players.

A very inexpensive manipulative opportunity! You get 6 sets of alphabet stickers with both upper- and lower-case letters in traditional manuscript form, shown on dotted-middle-line rule, along with a small photographic image of an object beginning with that letter. Just think of the possibilities! You can have your child run around the house, labeling things that also begin with that letter (or outside, if your child is excitable and you don't have any neighbors nearby). For a tamer exercise, let him or her find objects in a catalog or magazine to "label" with the appropriate sticker. Place a sticker on a blank sheet of paper and have your child draw as many objects as she can think of that begin with that letter. Or, as your student is learning a letter, affix it to the beginning of a ruled line of practice paper (or even ruled whiteboard) as a model for forming the letter. For more advanced practice with sounds, give each family member a letter "name tag" at suppertime with the rule that every sentence a person says during that meal must deliberately include as many words containing that letter sound as possible. Afterwards, vote on the best sentence of the meal (also a good time to introduce the concept of alliteration!).

Take the simplicity of the Bob Books and turn it into a reading game genius! Bob Books have helped children learn to read for decades, and now little ones can learn to recognize letters and sounds with the Bob Books Happy Hats Game. For up to four players, each person chooses one of the friendly Bob Books characters as their moving piece. Flick the spinner to see how many places to move on the game board the spaces are alphabetical around the edge of an oblong playing board (10x 20). On each space there is a blackline drawing of something that begins with that letter along with the printed word. Children choose from their hand of word-ending cards (40 in the game) to either form a word beginning with that letter or match the letter (if its a vowel). If they can form a word or match the vowel, they get to take a hat token. The person with the most hats at the end of the game wins. Learning to read just became a whole lot more fun!

Here's a place for kids to record all of their nature "finds," from observations to musings to artwork (photos or drawings). We like this journal because it's fairly free-form, not requiring a child to fill in a multitude of information, but allowing him to take the lead in what he wants to record. Our only qualm - it's not larger!

But at least it won't be too bulky to tote! Book is half-sized (like folded standard pages), and contains log pages, photo/artwork pages, a quick log (to keep a running record of entries), log tips, and ideas for related nature activities. Sidebars contain interesting activities that may stimulate observation of particular plants or animals - just in case your woodsman needs a little prompting. pb, spiral-bound.

This creative game takes what your child loves to eat and turns it into a fun, learning game. Before each game begins make sure the triangular cards are shuffled and placed in the center. Taking turns each player draws six cards from the deck and uses them to form their own pizza circle. The first game titled "The Works" is fairly simple to play. Each player takes turns drawing and discarding until the first person creates "the works" or has obtained one of each topping. The second game is titled "Half & Half." The object of this game is to create a pizza only using two toppings. The last two games are a little more challenging. "Make 10" calls for six pizza slices that have topping pieces equaling the number ten. "The Six Mix" challenges players to find slices of pizza that have toppings in order from one to six. The forty-eight cards also allow for your own creative variations. All four games are useful for the enhancement of counting, hand-eye coordination, and patterning skills. 1-4 players. ~ Tasha
