“Any man who has been placed in the White House can not feel that it is the result of his exertions or his own merit. Some power outside and beyond him becomes manifest through him. As he contemplates the workings of his office, he comes to realize with an increasing sense of humility that he is but an instrument in the hands of God.” Profoundly reflective, this quote summarizes President Coolidge’s experiences in the executive office. Weaving together glimpses of childhood, collegiate years, and his venture into law and politics, this book looks into the heart and soul of a man who loved his country. He gave his all to restore dignity to the oval office and preserve the American ideals of frugality in government. Engaging read with black and white photographs. One of the Exploring Government (Notgrass) literature recommendations. 273 pgs. SC. ~ Deanne

Discussions for the projects are not provided but would be helpful in some instances (some general information is provided in a brief parent guide included in the Curriculum Package). Questions, Quizzes, and Exams all tend toward reiterating textual information, while the projects tend toward analytical and evaluative activities.  Please note there are some corrections and updates for the Student Review Pack available on the Notgrass website.

Charles Colson was imprisoned for his involvement in the Watergate scandal. However, God used this national shame and his imprisonment for Colson’s salvation and His own glory. As Colson puts it, “disgrace is not the end of the story.” Colson shares an “insider’s view” of Watergate, but also how he gave his life to Christ and founded Prison Fellowship Ministries. First printed over 30 years ago, this autobiography still challenges and encourages readers—whether they be mighty or meek, in power or imprisoned. This expanded edition includes a new introduction, epilogue and a “writing of” written by Colson. Used with Notgrass Exploring Government curriculum. 5.5x8.5”, 383 pp, sc. ~ Ruth

Few biographies of U.S. presidents focus much attention on their youth or family upbringing. This volume, however, written by the award winning and nationally acclaimed author David McCullough, tells the remarkable story of Theodore Roosevelt as a young man. This book provides a comprehensive and well-documented examination of "Teddy" Roosevelt, from age ten to age twenty-eight. The author does a masterful job of helping readers understand the extraordinary Roosevelt family, the unique story of Theodore’s march toward manhood, and a way of life that has all but vanished from American society. The book includes several interesting black & white photos. A resource in the Notgrass Exploring Government curriculum. 370 pgs, pb. ~ Mike

Join Lewis, Clark, York, Sacagawea, and her son Jean Baptiste Charbonneau (affectionately called "Pomp") in their famous expedition of 1804-1806! Explore the wildlife, plants, flowers, people, and food the Corps of Discovery encountered during their historical trek westward to the Pacific Ocean. Included are 56 exploration cards, a trail map poster (18" x 24"), stickers, and instructions. Each exploration card is numbered, categorized, and dated. The cards bear an illustration of the discovery, the name of discovery, and a brief but informative description. There are directions on how to play two different games for 2-4 players. In Lewis & Clark Rummy Twist, be the first player to "go out" by collecting groups of three or four cards from the same category. For example, four reptile cards and three coastal Indian tribe cards would make a winning hand. In Lewis & Clark Trail, gather any five sequential cards following the route of Lewis & Clark. Young explorers can line up all of the exploration cards in numerical order and create their own expedition trail! Once they have completed the journey's sequence with cards, they can compare it to the poster.

Wisely, Franklin D. Roosevelt once stated, "No government is perfect. One of the chief virtues of a democracy, however, is that its defects are always visible and under democratic processes can be pointed out and corrected." Yet, each president had a level of faith-in God, in mankind, and in our great nation. Quoting American presidents from George Washington through Barrack Obama, the authors explore the role faith has played in the American presidency throughout our flawed history. Quotations and related Scriptures are shared along with Making It Real self-examination questions. Additional questions and hot topic questions found in the back of the book make this a creative way to study history and current events as a family or youth group. Various scripture versions are used. 116 pgs, sc. ~ Deanne

Wind your way through five time periods of American history while you race to the finish line. Players start in the time of early American exploration, and work their way through the Colonial period, American Revolution, Constitution and Civil War by answering questions that test historical knowledge. Question cards have one question from each time period (350 questions total). In order to move forward on your turn, you have to answer the question that corresponds to the time period your playing piece is in. If you get it correct, you can roll and move, otherwise, your turn is over. The questions cover historical subjects, geography, personalities, government, and more – and include a mix (from an adult's point of view) of fairly easy to challenging questions. Action cards have been added with the current edition of the game as well, for added engagement. For 2-8 players, or more in teams. - Zach

Years before his famous, "Mr. Gorbachev tear down this wall" speech, former President Ronald Reagan felt called to be God's instrument in this world. From simple beginnings in small town America where he was raised in the church by a faithful mother; to celebrated Republican and former staunch Democrat; from actor turned state governor to the highest office in the United States, Mr. Reagan sought to honor God and his Christian faith. Weaving together historical events, speeches and correspondences, and the memories of friends and family, Dr. Kengor presents a captivating look at the life of a man who firmly believed that all individuals mattered and had worth. Well written and researched, this book demonstrates to teens and parents alike the power of a life submitted to God. Used in Notgrass Exploring Govt. SC. 419 pgs. ~ Deanne

It's the same! But, different. Leaving the world of CDs behind, Rosetta Stone Homeschool has taken the leap into the world of online subscription formats. As with every major format change, there are advantages and disadvantages. You will probably like the changes which provide more mobility and more flexibility (unless you do not have access to high speed internet or do not wish to enter the internet world). All the aspects of the Rosetta Stone approach to language acquisition that we've come to love and expect are there. It's just packaged differently.

So, what's different? First of all, there are only four products (instead of the 70 or so we carried before). Each product is an online subscription. This subscription gives one student 24 months of access. You purchase a subscription then you choose your language as part of the activation process. There are 24 languages available and a subscription purchase lets you choose any one of the 24 (Family Pack subscribers can choose up to three different languages). The subscription also gives you access to ALL levels of instruction available in that language. All languages have at least three levels. Some languages have five levels. If workbooks, quizzes, or tests are available (only for a few languages), access to pdf versions of this material comes with the subscription. Because all content is online, you can access it from a computer, laptop, or mobile device and you can access it from anywhere that you have a fast internet connection. You can even download lessons (with Audio Companion) to use when the internet is not available.

So, what's the same? The dynamic immersion instructional methodology, the voice recognition software, and the student tracking abilities. In other words, all the good stuff that has made Rosetta Stone distinctive and a favorite with homeschoolers. And there is still a 30 Day Money Back Guarantee if you are not satisfied with the program. To get a sense of the program, check out the video demo found on our website.

Rosetta Stone's "Dynamic Immersion™" methodology combines multimedia technology with a total immersion approach utilizing four aspects images, intuition, interactivity, and instruction. Understanding of the language is built through spoken responses to real-life simulations utilizing TruAccent® speech-recognition technology which listens, analyzes, and corrects the student response. [Headset with microphone is needed but not included.]

Core Lessons cover: A. Listening & Reading combined; B. Listening only, C. Reading only, D. Speaking, and E. Writing. There are Focused Activities that concentrate on language skills vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, reading, speaking, listening, writing and Adaptive Recall which are review sequences. While the general content and methodology is similar between the various Rosetta Stone versions, the Homeschool version is unique in giving parents the ability to plan and track the student's progress through the lessons and activities and to print data reports.

Rosetta Stone Levels (in any language) cover the following material:

In terms of high school credit equivalency (as before) Rosetta Stone is not "accredited" because it is not a school, but each level of the Homeschool program has a "Full Year Curriculum" lesson plan. If you follow that lesson plan, each level will be a 36 week program if you're not using the supplemental (suggestions in teacher materials) materials, or 45 weeks if you are (equivalent to 1 school year). Not all schools or boards will accept RS as credit, so checking to ensure it will be accepted is recommended.

While it's a bit sad to say "good-bye" to Rosetta Stone's old standby CD-based program, it's easy to see the advantages and necessity of increased mobility. Thankfully, favorite features have been retained and the program remains a strong option for high school foreign language. As before, we encourage the use of a grammar workbook to complement the strong conversational aspect of the program. ~ Janice

~ Janice
