The journey begins in a library where you learn of a special time machine that was created to explore the history of engineering. The time machine is locked away inside a factory, and to gain access to the machine, students must complete brief activities where they are introduced to the basics of binary code and Boolean equations, both of which are used when dealing with computers, as in computer or electrical engineering. After entering the machine, students can go to three different locations. Ancient Egypt is where students learn about civil engineering by helping to design a ramp for a pyramid and an irrigation system. In World War II, students learn about electrical engineering by adjusting electrical specifications on a submarine, and then actually going through a simulated trip from the United States to Britain to see whether or not the submarine arrives safely. They can also help to choose radar detection systems to see which can survive the longest and best detect German planes. The third destination is the Middle Ages, where students help design a catapult and a drawbridge. The time spent on each activity is completely up to the student/teacher, as anywhere from 20 minutes to 2-3 hours can be spent at each location depending on how much you want to experiment and to learn. Even when one design works, students may wish to try other options and then evaluate the costs and benefits of the various designs. Each activity also has info on the mathematical/scientific specifics of the task which at times may be a bit over student's heads depending on the age and the specific activity, but will still expose the students to some of the complexity of engineering, and even some of the basics of mathematical/scientific principles that are used almost daily by some engineers. Also, the CD-ROM's official website (which can easily be Googled or accessed through a link in the CD itself) has PDF files of teacher's manuals which contain additional information on the activities, as well as suggested teaching methods and ways to get the most out of each activity.     FYI: The front of some bullet trains is designed to look like the bill of a kingfisher to cut down on noise. The kingfisher is able to dive into water without much splash despite the change in pressure. This is similar to the change in air pressure experienced when a bullet train exits a tunnel, and the shape decreases sound that would normally be caused by the change in air pressure. Scientists are studying nature everyday in order to benefit mankind and this book looks at those discoveries through the lens of a Christian worldview. ~ Donna
