Children as young as 3rd grade can explore the world of electricity and magnetism with this kit from Thames and Kosmos. Curious scientists can build 30 different circuits with the snap-together blocks and do over 60 experiments with the constructions. The included experiment manual will walk builders through each of the projects with illustrations and text. Build electrical circuits, an electric motor, and experiment with magnetism and electromagnetism. Along with the items in the kit, you will need some additional items that are listed on page 5 of the experiment manual. A great way to learn is to do, and this kit offers that opportunity. 64 pieces. ~ Donna

No doubt the "big kahuna" of electricity labs, this kit contains 119 experiments and plenty of durable components to try all of them—or even set up your own! The manual begins pretty simply, discussing basic concepts such as series and parallel circuits, switches, conductors, how current flows, and more. All lessons teach one specific concept and gradually build off each other. Once the basics of electricity are covered, the guide moves on to measuring current, magnetic forces, electricity and magnets together, alternating current, capacitors, coils and oscillating circuits, and electricity in chemistry. Each section includes roughly 10-20 experiments, all focusing on one particular application of the given topic. Experiments are many and varied; in the electricity and magnetism section, you may create a jumping iron rod, test how two iron objects react inside an electrified coil, and even slow the fall of a magnet using aluminum. While studying coils and oscillating circuits, you might make a singing coil, a backward transformer, or electric current filters. One thing's for sure: you'll almost never run out of things to try with this kit! The most helpful feature of the manual is the plethora of information included on each page. Every experiment receives a clear-cut, fully-illustrated color diagram of how the set-up is supposed to look, how to perform the experiment, and what's happening in technical terms. Beyond this, many experiments incorporate helpful or cautionary tips and explanations of particular topics (such as "Ohm" units). A bonus 'Check It Out' section is also given at the end of every chapter. The "Electrical Current and Magnetism" chapter, for example, offers interesting information on electromagnets, generators, Lenz's law, the word 'relay', power lines, and electric circuit breakers. All in all, this is probably the most thorough electrical lab I've seen. All parts are clearly labeled and large enough to be handled and positioned easily. Pieces easily fit together, and every one features a line or some other diagram demonstrating where the current is flowing and what the object is doing using circuit symbols. This kit is no doubt a short-circuit to understanding electricity—before long, your brain will be hardwired to understand these concepts!

This neatly packaged product teaches your young scientist about circuits and how to build them, with step-by-step instructions, a workspace, and storage all in one place. A 62-page, spiral-bound "Kit Book" is attached to the front of the box and inside the back cover are the encased wires with built-in snaps, on which you will build your circuit projects. Firmly packaged between the two covers you will find all you need to finish your circuits – 1AA battery, 2 jumper wires, 2 lamps, 1 motor, 1 buzzer, 1 color wheel, 1 push switch, 1 slide switch, 1 16P nail, 4 ft. of wire, 1 compass, 1 penny, 1 brass screw, 1 wooden craft stick, string, short section of a drinking straw, rubber band, and paper clips.

I played with this set and built the circuits shown in the project book. The best part is that you can look at the information in the book and see the illustrations as you snap in and connect the parts, which is a great way to make sure you do it correctly.

The information in the book is divided into 8 chapters – getting started, simple circuits, batteries, conductors and insulators, switches, series circuits, parallel circuits, and electromagnetism. An introduction and "How to Use" section of information will get you started with explanations about the "Power Page" (encased wires with built-in snaps) and all of the components that are included. Each chapter begins with an explanation of the concepts within, goals for the chapter and definitions and symbols that might be new. Each chapter ends with questions for discussion and a challenge to extend the information. There are nine total activities in chapters 2-8, allowing children to put into practice the concepts learned in those chapters. They can clip the jumper wire onto the snaps to complete a simple circuit; snap the switches in place for a circuit that can be opened and closed; or make an electromagnet by snapping a push switch in place and using the nail and jumper wires as the magnet – watch the paper clips jump to your homemade magnet.

Because components are snapped into place (just like snapping your coat) younger ones with smaller hands are able to complete the activities too. What a great teaching tool! ~ Donna

What is electricity? How do magnets work? Electricity and Magnetism works to unfold the answers to these questions and explain the connection between the two. It was only in the last century that scientists discovered how to generate the electricity that powers our lights, heating and air conditioning systems, and electronic devices. Although current electricity is the most important form of electricity, the book also covers natural or static electricity. Surprisingly, magnetism was discovered over 2000 years ago, but it was not until relatively recently that scientists began to investigate its mysterious properties. Learn all about magnetic forces and fields and how to create your own magnet. ~ Enh
