Everyone in your family will be able to benefit from these drawing lessons which approach the skill of drawing in bite-size, incremental steps. The CD-ROM contains 30 lessons, each resulting in the same basic project, but with slightly different directions for students in grades in the grammar stage (grades 1-4), the logic stage (grades 5-8), and the rhetoric stage (grades 9-12). In the grammar stage, the author expects that students will learn basic color theory, basic shapes and lines, basic shading and shadowing techniques, and the ability to imitate styles of classic artists. Objectives for the logic stage are similar as for the grammar stage, but with the expectation that the older student will develop more sophisticated skills and understanding in color theory, shading and shadowing. By the rhetoric stage, students should be learning composition, advanced color theory, advanced shading and shadowing techniques as well as developing their own individual style in their art. Although the lessons can be used for class, co-op, or home use, no artistic experience on the teacher's part is required. The author suggests that as the teacher, you will probably want to do the lesson yourself before class, and perhaps do it along with them during class. The lessons are designed to take about an hour to complete, and the author suggests a pace of one lesson per week. Lessons begin with drawing basic shapes and progress to include contour drawings; shading and shadowing; creating highlights; the color wheel; using monochromatic, complementary, and analogous colors in a drawing; shading with color, perspective, drawing in different styles, drawing portraits, creating a pleasing composition and more.

The lessons are very easy to use. They are accessible from the "lessons" tab at the top of the main screen, or you can jump into Lesson 1 after reading the basic information about the program. Each lesson consists of a teaching portion and a printable student handout for each. The lessons progress down the screen and include an objective for the lesson, the materials needed, and step-by-step instruction through the lesson. Each step is accompanied by an example of what the drawing should approximately resemble at that point, although depending on the skill level of the student, this will vary. The student handouts are typically a visual reference for the student for each lesson. Because the lessons are displayed on a computer, it would be hard for all students to see the subject they are drawing at the same time. Most of the student handouts will need to be printed in color, so you will probably need to have a color printer available to you. As far as supplies go, you will need to gather a few, but they are relatively inexpensive. Each student will need a set of 24 oil pastels, a set of 24 colored pencils, compressed charcoal, willow charcoal, a charcoal pencil, a white drawing pastel, a kneaded eraser, a blending stump, low-tack masking tape, tinted charcoal paper (9" x 12), white drawing paper (9" x 12"), newsprint paper (9" x 12"), and colored construction paper (9" x 12").

All in all, it's a great basic course that you can use with all of your children at the same time, without the older ones getting bored or the younger ones being frustrated. Everyone can take learn or refine their own skill while working through the lessons. Because the "models" are usually photos included in the lesson material, the students could apply the same techniques to photos of their own selection to expand the lessons or practice further. I think that the CD-ROM format is an interesting choice, but I can see how it is a practical way for everyone to be able to see the lesson without sharing a book, and the student handouts can all be printed which avoids the issue of having student packets or even having to reproduce pages for each student. A lot of concepts are covered here, taught mostly from example and the student's drawing experience. Because the lessons are so straightforward and foundational, I could see a definite advantage in revisiting at least some of them each year, as students grow older and more skillful. The folks at Practical Homeschooling are fans too - The Phonics of Drawing received the first-place award in their Interactive Learning Awards for art. System requirements (PC only) are: Windows 98 or higher, CD-ROM drive. – Jess

"For People Who Can't Even Draw a Straight Line," "No Talent Required" - hey, this woman knows me! From Sandra Angelo (Discover Art), comes this easy self study guide and workbook that, using a simple, four-step drawing system, transforms your skills from barely beginner to accomplished artist in a few easy lessons. I like the directions to "begin at the beginning and work your way through the book sequentially," nice and simple. It's full of irreverent pearls of wisdom, like "The race goes not to the hare but the tortoise" and "those who don't give up succeed," and (my personal favorite), "Talent is REALLY not necessary." Sandra gives us a short introduction that would give hope to even the most drawing-challenged person. If you draw for 45 minutes to one hour per day, you can finish this book in 60-90 days (if you're in a hurry to improve). Otherwise, plan on spending longer relative to the amount of time per day you can allocate to drawing. Next, a materials section acquaints us with the "tools of the trade" - some basic equipment we need to gather before jumping in. Then on to the instruction. Some of this book is reminiscent of the Draw Today program, especially the use of grids for beginning artists. As promised, the instruction is super-easy to follow and all the work can be done right in the book. Instruction progresses logically from seeing and drawing shapes, to lines, to shading, creating texture, gradation, hatching, and plenty of good practice in a lengthy additional exercise section. The methods and exercises look great, and, if I didn't have a lot to do..... But, someday, I'll actually have some time each day to use this! In the meantime, I'm hoping many aspiring artists out there will benefit from Sandra's instruction. 150 pgs. in all, with 130 black-and white photos and 25 line drawings - including plenty of "before" and "after" testimonials to show this method really works.

This book, by illustrator Ralph Masiello, helps kids begin drawing through clear, step-by-step picture instructions. While each step is short and simple, the end result is a realistic (fairly detailed) bug. Each bug covers a pair of facing pages - on the left are the directions (starting with a simple shape or line, and then being built up, with the existing lines in black and added lines of each step in red so kids can clearly see what is being done at each step) and on the right is a full page picture of that bug colored realistically with different materials. Just over a dozen different bugs are included. - Melissa

Drawing live animals can often prove difficult for children (or anybody for that matter!). This art book is completely focused on helping children draw horses. It offers lots of practice, helpful tips, and critiques of other drawings, showing how to draw every piece to scale and shape. Activities range from some writing projects, mazes, complete-the-horse pictures, freehand drawing, to lessons and short exams. Interesting horse information is also included. Plus, the book comes from a Christian publisher and has Bible verses interspersed throughout.

This book is a revised edition that is higher quality than the original. The same basic lessons and format are presented, but now there are 118 pages of lessons (instead of 102) and many additional pages of blank paper for students to practice drawing. These blank pages are prefaced with tips for keeping a sketchbook. This edition also comes with a set of five "marker cards" for additional assignments. With a new cover and a perfect instead of spiral binding, this edition will have students drawing horses in no time.

This drawing instruction book takes a "learn by doing" approach, offering a progression of drawing exercises to help the art student build his or her skills. It starts with the basics, introducing students to the tools used, providing warm-up exercises, and offering brief explanations of value before the first exercise – drawing a bowl of eggs. The lessons then progress through shape, form and use of shading to show the light source. Specific still life exercises are given that offer students opportunities to draw common objects that are made up of basic shapes. The exercises progress in difficulty here, from tennis balls and fruit (spheres) to boxes, cans of soda, funnels, bottles, light bulbs, household tools, and even a telephone. Movement, texture and pattern are emphasized in the last half of the book and exercises include drawing ribbons, stuffed animals, draped fabric, plants and other household objects that provide opportunities for practice. The last section of the book provides pointers on how to compose a still life, some questions for self-evaluation, a list of suggested art books, and a gallery of student work. Overall, it's an inexpensive and no-nonsense drawing guide. 52 pgs, pb. – Jess

Integrate problem solving & logical thinking with literacy & reading skills and what do you get? This collection of 90 math exercises for your young elementary students! Each page has 1 easy-to-read problem and space for your child to draw the elements of the problem. For example: Draw 1 helicopter, 1 car and 1 fish. Draw a square around the one that does not belong. This particular problem tells you if a child knows what "1" of an item means and if he/she can draw a square. It is also an exercise in classification. You might group vehicles, so "fish" does not belong; however, if the student draws the fish and helicopter in blue, and the car in red, then they could classify by color and it would be the car that does not belong. All problems use complete sentences and encourage students to read carefully and organize their problem solving. 90pp ~Sara

While I am a little too young to remember Jon Gnagy, I can appreciate good art and good value! The kit includes a black-and-white 64-page instructional book, fifteen 12" x 18" sheets of drawing paper, a 12" x 18" drawing board, 3 sketching pencils, a carbon pencil, a kneaded eraser, a tortillion (or "stomp"), a piece of gray chalk, two pieces of black chalk, and a sandpaper pad. Armed with these materials, it's time to investigate the book, a short course in learning how to draw. The first pages focus on the basics: using your pencil, stomp, and chalk to make different tones. Then you practice drawing lines, shapes, and forms (3-D shapes). A "crash course" on composition and perspective follow. Then you jump into the lessons, which guide you in six or less steps to making a picture, complete with shading and texture. The steps are somewhat lengthy, with the goal being a very realistic, three-dimensional representation. Thankfully, the example drawing progresses with you. The lesson subjects increase in complexity, incorporating more complex shapes and a range of subject matter, including pumpkins, a steamboat, snow-covered landscape, a Great Dane, and a Mexican boy. The end of the book provides guidance on drawing the human figure in action. While I have some issues with the layout and readability of the book (all instructions are in three languages, which makes every page seem crowded), this is the only kit I have seen that includes all of your supplies, gets you up and running quickly, and emphasizes shading to produce a "finished" look. – Jess

This kit includes everything you need as a beginning artist. It includes a 32-page book, which provides an extensive introduction as well as several lessons to get you started. First, you are acquainted with the different materials used. The book discusses the purpose of each tool and different ways to get different effects. Once you have an understanding of the basics, you can move into the lessons. The lessons are broken down step-by-step and include pictures so you can clearly see the process. The lessons vary somewhat in difficulty, but are generally around the same skill level - for a beginner, but still fairly intermediate in overall detail and quality. After you complete the lessons, you should have a good foundation to continue from. As mentioned before, the materials you need to complete the lessons are included: drawing pencils, a kneaded eraser, sandpaper sharpener, pencil sharpener, stomp, measuring triangle and a drawing pad. The book and materials are contained in a durable plastic "book." - Melissa
