A creative, interactive, hands-on approach to vocabulary! What better way to retain the learning of new words? Using index cards, a file box, and a good dictionary, this approach is a welcome departure from the typical workbook fare. And, subtitled: Help for Reading, Writing, Spelling and S.A.T. Scores, it's obvious from looking at this book that it would, indeed, do just that! How? By teaching the roots of the English language found in Greek and Latin. Since the majority of our words are rooted in these classical languages, mastering these roots is a key that will open the door to understanding a myriad of words! The creative activity suggestions in this book could become the basis for wonderful unit studies as well.

Self-described as Charlotte Mason-flavored, this is language arts curriculum with a Biblical emphasis. As a starting place for each weekly lesson, students will read a continuing story about friends Micah and Claire and their Sunday School experiences. Each week follows the same pattern of activities: Day 1, read the weekly story; Days 2-3, learn topics in writing, grammar and punctuation; Day 4, write responses to a prompt (alternating between picture study, poetry and a Psalm); and Day 5, work on spelling and vocabulary and build a dictionary. Brief assessments are provided quarterly. The fourth quarter is designed for review. Starting with Level 2, students are introduced to punctuation, grammar & writing. students will learn about nouns, compound words, subjects/predicates; possessive nouns; combining sentences; commas; interjections; action verbs; homophones; synonyms/antonyms and specific verbs such as be, has and see and pronouns like this and that. Biblical themes and assignments (such as memorizing verses from 1 Corinthians 13 alongside Micah and Claire) are used throughout. Level 3 will further strengthen previous reading, observation and communication skills, and begin writing paragraphs. Level 4 (expected late 2018) will strengthen previous skills and add study in noun types, verb tenses, mechanics and write compositions.

This is a combined student and teacher consumable book. On the student pages, teacher notes are highlighted and kept minimal. While designed for you and the student to work along together, this text provides additional direction in the front matter and in the Teacher’s Aid section (about 100 pgs) in the back. This section includes dictionary pages to copy (or you can print off from the publisher’s web site); optional games to practice different language skills; spelling practice ideas; sight words alphabet practice; copywork practice; and grammar study sheets. You’ll want to provide more reading practice opportunities: a template to record these and a recommended Master Books reading list is included. Scriptures are from the NASB. Non-reproducible, consumable and 3-hole punched.

Master Books recommends beginning this series after Foundations Phonics and Basic Language Skills. However, to select a starting place, the general expectation is that the student’s skills should be comfortably at grade level (in reading, writing, and in handwriting).

An excellent resource, this book teaches students to write poetry by studying the forms and styles of great writers such as Shakespeare, Scott, Tennyson, and Longfellow. Students then complete a number of practice activities which reinforce the concepts learned.

The student workbook contains 30 lessons. It is recommended that three lessons be covered each week. Each lesson takes approximately 30 minutes to complete.

As the teacher you will likely want to read through the new concepts at the top of the page with your student. Concepts covered in this volume include: simile, rhyme, how to use a rhyming dictionary, metaphor, meter, pun, iamb, personification, trochee, synecdoche, anapest, hyperbole, dactyl, onomatopoeia, alliteration, rhetorical question, refrain, oxymoron, spacial poetry, and euphemism. The student will then work through the activity. After every few lessons, review questions are given to insure that the concepts are retained and to provide additional practice of previously-covered information. Upon the completion of this program, the student should have mastered several figures of speech called tropes. A cumulative test is also included. Teacher's edition contains teaching instructions as well as completed student pages. ~ Rachel

After learning these familiar roots and practicing alphabetizing via a simple "Go Fish"-type game, players progress to 3 higher levels of play. Level 3 is played like Rummy using three root combinations to further expand vocabulary and comprehension. The result of all this fun? Mastering 42 Greek and Latin roots, over 190 vocabulary words learned, and the ability to at least partially decipher over 2,000 words!

Finally, a large print Bible for young readers! One of the best pieces of advice I received in my early days of homeschooling was to have a large print Bible for my young children. The point was made that young children may focus better on their reading skills without having to strain to read the small text, making Bible reading less intimidating and more enjoyable. Within the pages of this Bible, you will find a "Getting to know Jesus" question and answer section, introductions and outline of contents for each book of the Bible, 14 full color illustrations, eight Bible reading helps, eight full color maps, a dictionary, double column text and a list of one hundred fifty Bible stories. The NIrV is based upon the NIV and contains shorter sentences, simplified text and consistent use of names (eg: Sea of Galilee is used throughout NT, rather than the interchangeable names Sea of Gennesaret and Sea of Tiberias). Here is a sample from the NIrV, "God has breathed life into all Scripture. It is useful for teaching us what is true. It is useful for correcting our mistakes. It is useful for making our lives whole again. It is useful for training us to do what is right." 2 Timothy 3:16. 8 1/2"x 5 ½" 2042 pgs, hc. ~ Deanne

Another patriotic book from Wallbuilders, this one is a reprint of the book originally published in 1848 by American historian B.J. Lossing. It looks like a reprint, too, in both font and illustration. The original language is unchanged; for instance, the first chapter, in discussing Josiah Bartlett of New Hampshire, states that he practiced medicine, "his business soon became lucrative, and he amassed a competency." I'm not sure what a competency is, and my Webster's American Family Dictionary doesn't define this word – I suppose his net worth increased. But by and large, the text is quite understandable.

About two-thirds of the book is what you would expect it to be from the title. Each of the 56 signers of the Declaration get about three to five pages of biographical text. The facts of each man's life are presented in a straightforward manner. The remaining third of the book is a discussion of the Declaration of Independence and some of the major events that brought it about. Next, the Articles of Confederation is presented, again including discussion of the surrounding history. Then, the Constitution is printed, also with historical context. Finally, if you've been dying to read the Stamp Act, that hated piece of legislation forced on the colonies, it is here too.

This book will give insights into this collection of gifted leaders to which we owe our freedom and rich history. sc, 384 pgs.

This unit study takes the hands-on, multi-disciplinary approach of Galloping the Globe and applies it to U.S. geography. This course is intended to teach students about the fifty states and the District of Columbia through six different subject areas and a couple of informational paragraphs. Each subject has a very state-specific application: geography – physical and topical forms located in the state; science – state trees, birds, flowers, rocks/minerals, and many other science related topics that are important to each state; language arts – based on the preamble for each state's constitution; history/biography – historical figures, leaders, authors, artists, and others connected to the state; literature – set in the states, written by an author from the state, or relating to some other aspect of the state; and Bible – using the motto for each state to help in character development. There are also mapping activities and hands-on projects for each state, as well as internet resources that may be useful. A CD-ROM accompanies the book, including over 150 reproducible outline maps, word searches, crossword puzzles, and other puzzles and activities to be used throughout the study. The appendix of the book also contains reproducible forms for character traits (character study and development being an important aspect of this course), state symbols, state science charts, order of statehood, state report, recipes for making maps, biography report, animal report, geography dictionary, state flag pledges, state notebook, and travel & tourism information. As far as teaching tips, the first section contains overviews and tips on each of the subject areas, suggestions for the general activities, website resources, a more detailed language arts guide, teacher preparation points, and ideas for adapting the course for use by older students. Cantering the Country can be adapted to take anywhere from 1 to 3 years. 255 pgs, pb. ~ Zach
