A literature-based unit study by the author of The Prairie Primer, based on Anne of Green Gables. It covers literature, composition, Bible, fine arts, social studies, economics, health, physical and occupational education, and life skills for the duration of the course. Areas of study not included which you will need to purchase separately are science, math, and grammar and spelling (if needed). The author also suggests using a one-year Latin course of your choice "in keeping with the spirit of Academics and Anne." I think that would appeal to Anne as well! There are four books required for use with this curriculum - The Annotated Anne of Green Gables, Anne's Anthology, Writers INC (2001 edition), and The Green Gable Letters from L.M. Montgomery to Ephraim Weber 1905-1909. Other resources are recommended throughout the curriculum, which you will probably be able to find at the library. The curriculum guide is divided into nine units, each one focusing on four to five chapers of Anne of Green Gables. Each unit can be completed in four weeks, thus allowing the study to be completed in a year, but it can also easily span two years if students choose to complete more of the activities or even spend more time on the activities. Planning guides are given at the beginning of each unit, and daily lesson plans are also given for those wishing to finish within a year. Both of these resources allow you to better plan the time and activities to fit your schedule. Occasional student worksheets are included, which are reproducible for your family's use. This unit study guide was revised and updated in 2004.

This hefty high school curriculum, newly revised in 2016, was designed to train girls to become godly women, based on Proverbs 31:10-31. The goal of the curriculum is to help Christian girls develop their skills and abilities for optimal service to the Lord within the family setting: a preparation for all the duties of an adult life. The guide's beginning elaborates on the program's philosophies and then discusses four learning styles as well as the Six R's of education (adds Research, Responsibility and Righteousness to the traditional three). The author assumes that students have a good basic mastery of Math and English grammar, as well as a good reading ability. In addition, these courses are written for mature young people., there are reproducible forms for planning and record keeping. (It is highly recommended that your daughter plan or at least help to plan her own lessons.) The forms included are a Goal Planning Checklist, High-School report Card, Lesson Planning Sheet, and a High School Cumulative Record Card. (This sheet will become the high school transcript for any student wishing to proceed on to college.) The curriculum guide is broken up into 20 different units (10 in Volume 1 and 10 in Volume 2). Each unit focuses on a different verse or verse group from Proverbs 31. Then, this unit is broken down into thematic mini units. Subjects covered are Bible and Christian Character, Cultural Studies, Reading and Literature, Composition, Math and Personal Finance, Science, Health and Physical Fitness, Practical Arts, and Decorative and Performing Arts. In each subject area within a unit, this curriculum guide gives a list of lessons for girls to choose from and complete. Since activities are provided for the four learning styles, there are more activities in the guide than can be completed in 4 years. The materials are written directly to the students, as they are encouraged to take responsibility for their own education. Each lesson assigns suggested point value (largely based on Carnegie units), so when an activity is completed you can easily total the points and convert them into High School credits. The guide also provides detailed instructions about how best to use the program, lists essential materials for the course, and recommends supplementary courses. Essential materials for the course are a Bible, concordance, dictionary, encyclopedia, hymnbooks, an English grammar book, and a writing style book). The list of strongly suggested materials is more extensive. Far Above Rubies was created to stand on its own, although the lessons call for reading and using a number of other books, such as Writer's Inc., the Kingfisher History Encyclopedia, Understanding the Times, and more. At the end of each volume, there is an updated, detailed list of recommended resources (and corresponding Web locations for more information), many of which we also offer in our catalog. Also included for each volume are some cross-reference guides to help you locate specific lessons based on chronology or theme and a "25 Ways to Have Fun with Book Reports" chart. Please note that although the guide self-proclaims that it is not necessarily against college and career goals for young ladies, they admit that this is not the primary aim of this guide. Consequently, if your daughter plans on attending college or becoming a career woman, you will need to supplement her curriculum with some college-preparatory math and science (specific suggestions are offered). However, this curriculum does still provide the college-bound with a well-rounded base, and it also offers a number of business and vocational skills. Help prepare your daughters using the model provided in Proverbs 31. Includes Beautiful Girlhood Audiobook and 7 bonus e-books: Friendship, Friendship Notebook pages, Girls in Bookland, Nest in the Honeysuckles, The Merchant Maiden, The Basket of Flowers, and The Value of a Praying Mom. The curriculum is only available in PDF format on CD-ROM. Requires Adobe Reader, a free download. Revised edition, 2016. Win/Mac ~ Rachel/Ruth.

Before studying history in depth in TRISMS for the high school level, you can take a one or two-year tour of the entire scope of world history in upper elementary or middle school. History's Masterminds covers world history up to the year 2010 in a similar format as the high school TRISMS, though there are some differences. In the high school level, more time is spent on each period in history, and students spend more time analyzing each civilization in depth, including the art, music, architecture, and literature of each culture. In History's Masterminds, the emphasis is on chronological developments throughout history, including new inventions, geographical explorations, and science discoveries. In fact, students will be compiling information on these three topics into a course book throughout the program. Children will also read and research their way through history via historical fiction, biographies, and other resource books. History, geography, writing, language, literature, and science are all covered through this program. Math history is covered, but math itself is not; so you will need to supplement with a complete math curriculum (Saxon Math is recommended). The set is composed of a teacher's manual, student book, and a loose-leaf pack of student worksheets, research questionnaires, quizzes, and quarterly tests. The teacher's manual contains all of the lessons, assignments, teaching information, reading lists, and answer keys while the other two packs contain the forms and worksheets the student will need to complete the ssignments.

The author recommends completing this course over a 2-year period. There are 38 weeks of lessons included, and each week's activities are listed on a lesson plan grid, similar to what is used in the upper-level TRISMS books but with a few differences. The assignments are divided between science, inventions, explorers, and language. A separate grid for each week lists recommended historical fiction, biographies and resource books while major historical events, suggested topics for research, and math history developments are also included. Each weekly lesson focuses on a different chronological span of time and covers all of these topics during that time period. For each week, students will be reading historical fiction and other books and completing questionnaires for scientists, inventions, and explorers. Questionnaires include a series of questions about the topic that the student answers through researching the topic, using the library, and other available resources. Inventions questionnaires also ask the student to draw and/or diagram the invention, while Explorers questionnaires ask the student to mark the explorer's journey on a map and create a map key. The reading lists in the teacher's guide offer suggestions for resources, organized by lesson, which may help when researching. There are separate science assignments for most weeks, which include experiments and research projects. Language assignments are more extensive and incorporate a wide variety of topics including poetry, book reports, letter writing, reports, public speaking, word roots, grammar, outlining, interviewing, bibliographies, and much more. Because the emphasis is on exploring history in a very chronological way, creating a timeline is essential to the course. Famous inventors, scientists, explorers, other major historical figures and events will all be added to the timeline as they are studied each week. Quizzes and tests are also included for reinforcement; quizzes are given every three lessons while tests are given four times throughout the year.

Overall, this course is not only a great way to try the TRISMS approach, but it offers great practice in researching and a terrific scope of our entire history as well. Its open-ended approach makes it useable with students of different grades, and it would be easy (and fun!) to use with multiple children. Because it is so heavily book and research-based, this would be a good fit for you especially if you have pretty easy access to a library and if your students are fairly motivated and independent. – Jess
