The goal of this book is to develop an understanding of the rock cycle & the difference between rocks and minerals and mineral identification. This book covers 11 topics in 17 different lessons with activities. Each lesson begins with an overview for that lesson, list of materials, lesson preparation instruction, hands-on activity, and closure which is the discussion of the activity. In some lessons there are several activities and all use items that are accessible. Teacher information pages include instruction on the topic of that lesson, and in some lessons there are demonstrations like using a hard boiled egg to show the earth's layers, making an earth crust sandwich, homemade rocks, and growing your own crystals. A resource list for teachers and students suggests a few websites and books for further research. Activity pages are reproducible. 48 pgs. - Donna

These are very helpful compendiums of science activities especially conceived for the youngest "scientist". Each has an introduction, materials list, detailed instructions for you (including discussion and conclusion), plus a "Want to do more?" extension activity to use if you want to expand on the activity. The original book is somewhat less useful than the sequel. Although activities are great, the organization makes it a little difficult to find activities to go with a particular study. Basic units of organization include: On Your Own (Science Center Activities), Building with Science (Construction and Measurement), Science for a Crowd, Paints and Prints, Wet and Messy, Science to Grow On (Health and Nutrition), Learning About Nature (Outdoor Science), and Acting Out Science in a Big Way. Use the index to locate activities on particular science topics. The second book has a more useful organization. Basic units include: Colors, Crystals and Creations (Chemistry); How Things Work (Physics); Digging in the Dirt (Geology); How Hot, How Cold, How Windy, How Wet (Weather); Aerial Acrobatics (Flight and Space); Roots and Shoots (Plants); Houses for Slugs, Hideouts for Hamsters (Zoology); and How Much, How Far, How Many (Mathematics). A most welcome feature of both is the inclusion of a suggested minimum age for each activity.

Let your young scientists explore the earth with 60 activities in the areas of the earth's structure, fossils, rocks & minerals, crystals & gems, and earthquakes & volcanoes. Don't let the smaller 9"x 7" size fool you; this book is over 180 pages of information and fun. Each of the five chapters follows the same format. A cute little poem (corny at times) begins the chapter and is then followed by a list of the activities and new words you might encounter (along with definitions). 'Dynamic Earth' offers bulleted information on that specific topic and then a number of activities is presented along with materials lists, instructions and illustrations (black & white) where needed. You will get to play 'Earth Trivia,' make an earth spinner, take a core sample of a cream-filled cupcake, use tostada shells to model the continents, play 'Continent Bingo,' make fossils, start a fossil collection, grow crystals and much more. You'll find most items needed for the activities around your house, and there are some reproducible pages for some of the other activities. The back of the book offers a few (minimal) suggestions for additional resources, but you will probably be able to find some good ones at your local library. There is also a suggestion for purchasing fossil, rock, and gem specimens but you can let your child collect rocks while playing outside or find your own sources for purchasing (We carry quite a variety).

Use this book as a unit study about earth science or as supplemental hands-on for your curriculum, either way you will have a lot of fun as you learn about the earth. ~ Donna
