At such an early age, mathematical reasoning begins with simple activities such as distinguishing between even or odd amounts and learning the ordinal numbers. The authors suggest working through this activity book page by page. The content spirals, which gives your child time to "digest" new concepts before moving on to more complex material. This series is correlated to the NCTM standards and accordingly incorporates topics such as patterns, number lines, graphs, fractions, probability, and problem solving, as well as basic addition and subtraction skills. The full-color activity sheets should especially appeal to the younger student. Not only are the illustrations eye-catching, but they do an excellent job of demonstrating mathematical representations and relationships. Although manipulatives are not required, a link to a virtual manipulative website is provided in case additional concrete-level reinforcement is needed. A wide variety of exercises and activities are utilized to keep your child both interested and motivated. For instance, Thinker Doodles and Mind Benders activities from parent company Critical Thinking are scattered throughout. 200+ pages. ~ Anh

Writing Detective Level One is a collection of 18 activities focused on investigative reporting. Students are given a short mystery story to analyze, with prompts to help them identify key points from the story: who, what, when, where, how, why. As they consider the elements of the story that help them answer these questions, they will be able to deduce or infer what actually happened. Their task from that point is to write a newspaper-style article that explains to other readers what occurred - keeping in mind that people reading their articles have not read the original story but still need all the details! Great practice for journalism and critical thinking. This workbook is consumable and reproducible for family use. Answers, including examples of finished articles, are included. – Zach

Introduce diagramming while practicing critical thinking in a user-friendly way. The 12 lessons begin with simple subjects and verbs, work through predicate nouns and verbs, continue to prepositional phrases, and end with compound predicate adjectives and nouns. With each lesson, students work through four steps: finding the diagramming error; diagramming a sentence; writing a sentence to match a provided diagram; and diagramming a given sentence. The first 3 exercises provide the diagrams, while the last asks the students to form the full diagram. Each step provides a handful of exercises, so students from a wide age range will finish this book with a solid grasp of beginning grammar. The 68 perforated pages are reproducible for one classroom use. sc. ~ Ruth

Are you looking for a way to challenge your middle school students while your youngers are enjoying Story of the World (or another world history course)? Becoming a world history detective will do it! This course combines critical thinking and reading comprehension skills with your students' standards-based history studies (ancient and medieval history)! Covered skills are impressive for this grade level: using supporting evidence, drawing inferences and conclusions, distinguishing between facts and opinions, understanding chronology or sequence of events, use of vocabulary using context clues, geographical and concept maps, and timelines. There's even grade appropriate experience with college-level analytical essay questions. The worktext provides a passage to read followed by a series of questions - both multiple choice/short answer as well as short essay. A complete answer key is available in the back which includes sample essay answers that identify key points). Free bonus review lessons are available at criticalthinking.com/whd1). 362 pgs, pb ~ Janice
