One of the "blessings" of being in my family is helping to review products. Sometimes it can be dull, but sometimes we receive fun stuff, and Melissa and I often end up playing games like this one. This game would be good practice for a younger child that knows his basic operations, but it was also challenging for Melissa and I, as we studied the board and our tiles to find the equation worth the most possible points. The board is similar to a Scrabble board, with 361 squares including 36 3S squares (3 times symbol score), 38 2S squares (2 times symbol square), 9 2E squares (2 times equation score), and 8 3E squares, (3 times equation score). 44 sign tiles (plus, minus, times, and divide by); 78 number tiles, 0-9; 25 fraction tiles, with halves, thirds, fourths, and sixths; plus three blank tiles are included. This game plays like Scrabble, too. The same crossword structure is formed as each player picks nine tiles and uses as many as possible to get the most points, then restocks his tray. Equal signs are "free," but you are only allowed one per play. - Stephanie

Presumably the next step after Making Math Meaningful Level 6, this student-directed workbook covers the fundamentals of Algebra. With clear conceptual presentations, this is indeed written in such a way that the student really can teach himself Algebra. Like the rest of the Making Math Meaningful series, the activities require the student to frequently reflect on conceptual understanding. Questions beginning with "what happens if/when…" are used throughout. This workbook consists of 10 chapters covering math sentences, negative numbers, fundamental principles, equations with one or two variables, polynomials, the quadratic formula, factoring, fractions involving variables, and the Pythagorean theorem. ~ Anh

A versatile game of word play, this game builds vocabulary, spelling, and conceptual problem-solving skills. Played on four 14" by 10" magnetic boards, with 75 letter pieces per board, players scramble the first word on their word list (each player receives a different list with 4, 5, and 6 letter words) and pass the board to the right. The next player must unscramble the word in three minutes. If the word they come up with is a real word, but not the one on the previous player's word list, points are still given. Points vary on how many hints players need to unscramble the word. The next step of the game is to use the unscrambled letters to create a new word - with points being awarded based on how many of the 4, 5, or 6 letters available get used. Round one is for 4 letter words, round two for 5, and so on. The game also includes instructions for varying difficulty, and because of the game play, much younger children could also use the board and game pieces for simple letter recognition exercises. Unique and different, this game makes learning words a lot of fun. 2-4 players (or more for teams).

Do you find the concept of the Trinity hard to explain for young children? Well, it's no wonder as most adults don't truly understand all the intricacies of the Trinity themselves! However, this simply written and illustrated book provides amazing insights into this difficult topic through the metaphor of God and an apple. Yeah, so it's hard to explain on paper, but if you could just see this book. In the very beginning it catches your attention with "Here is 1 apple. There is only 1 true God. The apple has three parts: the peel, the flesh, the core. The 1 true God has three persons; God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit." Although there is text, the meaning is effectively conveyed more through the use of simple but highly conceptual illustrations that really capture the essence of the comparison. This is one of those rare and insightful books that, although easily readable for the very young, also can teach those of us who are older. - Jess

The philosophy of the Singapore Math Approach eludes many, but this book breaks it down into bite-sized, understandable pieces so that you can teach your child the math basics in a logical conceptual manner.

This book explains that math should be taught using the C-P-A Approach – concrete, pictorial, and abstract. Concrete employs manipulatives, pictorial uses visuals or drawings, and lastly, abstract uses math symbols. The idea is that a child cannot do math with symbols until they have adequately worked through the concrete and pictorial methods of doing math. For example, a child will work with blocks or cubes to do basic addition, then use pictures on a page or draw pictures to represent the numbers, then they are ready to do addition problems using the + and = symbols.

This 122-page book is divided into four chapters, after explaining the philosophy behind the approach. Each chapter deals with the four basic functions – addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Within each chapter, activities are presented according to the suggested sequence of stages of the Singapore strategy. For example, the stages of addition are number bonds, decomposing numbers, left-to-right addition, place value disks and charts, vertical addition, and traditional addition. By working through stages in the proper sequence, students will have a better understanding of the function and will master it more quickly.

The author suggests there are a few manipulatives that will be needed for the activities in this book – place value strips, place value discs, place value charts, number bond cards, part-whole cards, decimal tiles, and decimal strips. She explains how they will be used and even offers suggestions for making your own.

If you are one of those who have been scared off by the Singapore Approach, this book might alleviate some of the fear. Pretty easy to understand and apply and could be used easily with any curriculum as you try to explain mathematical functions to your children. pb. ~ Donna

Resulting from his work with dyslexics, Ron Davis (author of The Gift of Dyslexia) has developed effective techniques to address other learning difficulties often associated with dyslexia - ADD, dyscalculia (trouble with math) and dysgraphia (trouble with handwriting). Coming to an introductory understanding of the learning theory behind these techniques has literally reoriented my thinking on the subject - and reorientation is what his methodologies are all about. It all has to do with whether we utilize verbal conceptualization (thinking with the sounds of symbols and words) or nonverbal conceptualization (thinking with visual images). Dyslexics are primarily picture thinkers; but this method of thinking is subliminal - faster than the person can be aware of - and therefore most dyslexics are not aware of what their minds are doing. When an individual becomes disoriented (such as happens when you look at an optical illusion), perception becomes distorted. Many picture thinkers learn to use disorientation very early in life and it seems to work - until the child starts school, that is, and tries to learn the symbols of language. A picture thinking child will encounter so many sources of confusion in a single sentence that disorientations spontaneously occur, one after another. If the main problem is with reading, the child is labeled dyslexic. If the disorientation causes his sense of time to distort and his attention to jump around, he has ADD. If it affects math, he has dyscalculia. If it causes bad handwriting, he has dysgraphia. By showing a dyslexic how to turn off the disorientations at the moment they occur, and then helping him find and master the symbolic information that triggered the disorientation (and the majority of this book is detailed instruction in how to do this), the reading, math, writing, and spelling problems begin to disappear. Yeah, it's so good it's "bad." This course teaches parts of speech and sentence construction, reinforcing the learning with a game that can be played in groups, with 2, or alone. Invented by author Karen Newell to "take the doldrums out of diagramming", this game will not only help students master complex sentence construction, but make them proficient punctuators too. The presentation of information is very clear – and helpfully broken down into digestible chunks. The program has seven modules, each with only five or six rules, each presented in a one or two-page tutorial. I love the simple flowchart Mrs. Newell uses to direct student progress through the rules. Basically, students will study the tutorial then write five sentences applying the rule. If they are correct, they go to the next rule. Otherwise, they write five more, conceptually looping until they "get it." After this, they optionally go on a "detective hunt" to round up these "bad" guys. After all rules in a module are mastered, they get to play the Big Bad Grammar Slammer for the completed module, including all earlier modules in the game. Yup, and if you break the rules (grammar rules), you end up in the (you guessed it) slammer. Rules for playing the game alone, with multiple players, and with teams are provided. The only additional materials you need to supply are one regular die and paper and pencil(s) for each player. Quizzes and tests are a snap to construct, since they utilize the same format as the game. A test for each module should be given after the student has played the game five times using the rules in that module. Quizzes can be given at any time, but would be useful as drill and review after the course is completed.

The grammar instruction is easy to read and understand even as the program progresses from simple to more complex sentence structures. Uncluttered text pages use very readable font size. Each construction is introduced and integral concepts are explained and shown with examples. Presentation is very clear. Diagramming of each rule (construct) is modeled then the student is asked to diagram several similarly-constructed sentences. The reinforcing game is also simple, but ingenious, and highly motivating. Can your children learn to play by the rules (of proper sentence construction and diagramming), or will they have to "do time" in the Big, Bad Grammar Slammer?

Second Edition materials are now available for the K and 1st grade courses. These materials reflect an obvious graphics and appearance update as well as a complete lesson "re-do." The courses have retained all of their many excellent features but there are some differences – welcome ones, I might add. In general, within the colorful and engaging books there is a greater emphasis on skill development, mastery, cumulative review and formative assessment. The STAR methodology is still foundational but there is a greater emphasis on STEM's interdisciplinary approach. Chapter assessments are available in a traditional test format as well as in an editable test bank. Lessons include hands-on activities, conceptual understanding, problem solving, application, modeling, reasoning, and strands of algebra and geometry. The many course resources found on the included CD-ROM and PowerPoint presentations (editable) have been added to the blackline masters, transparency masters, memory masters, and test banks. Software links have been removed altogether – a good call since they are difficult to keep updated. Cumulative reviews are provided every third chapter and a comprehensive year-end cumulative review is usable as the next grade's pre-assessment test. Although in this edition, the daily Moments with the Master has disappeared, there is still a chapter emphasis on Biblical worldview and the Life in the Sea theme is still part of the First Grade material. Second edition Teacher's Manuals are even more user-friendly and attractive (and they were excellent before); reduced color copies of the student pages are found in the TM. Also, the TM format matches the other Purposeful Design Bible and Science courses. As with the previous edition, the 176 daily lessons each include an introduction, directed instruction, and lesson review. "Around the edges" topics include lesson objections, vocabulary, preparation (materials list is in chapter overview), extension, recovery, and enrichment activities, as well as key ideas. I'm glad to see this quality update of an excellent math series. ~ Janice
