In his best-selling study of the book of Romans, author Fritz Ridenour reminds us that Christianity is not made up of the rules, legalism or even attending church every Sunday. To help us see what Christianity is, he walks us through the book of Romans chapter by chapter to see what Paul has to say on the issue. In each chapter, he picks apart a section of a chapter from Romans. Each passage from Romans is printed right in the book, eliminating the need to switch back and forth from your Bible. After each section, he gives us a commentary on what Paul wrote, calls our attention to specific verses, and applies what he says to how we live today. He reminds us of important facts that many Christians have forgotten, in the quest to be a "good" person and please God by their "good" behavior. An enlightening and refreshing study for new and old Christians alike to rediscover the meaning behind being a Christian, and the joy in following Christ. - Jess

"View Gods Word through Dr. Seuss, his creatures and his friends. Once you do, his stories youll see, never the same again." As I read Green Eggs and Ham to my children, Im not sure I saw the Biblical lesson which could be applied. This book by James Kemp helps you see Dr. Seusss writings in a different light. He includes How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Horton Hatches the Egg, Yertle the Turtle, What Was I Scared of?, The Cat in the Hat Comes Back, The Zax, Horton Hears a Who, Green Eggs and Ham, Bartholomew and the Oobleck, The Sneetches, The Butter Battle Book, and On Beyond Zebra, then discusses the Biblical applications for each. In Green Eggs and Ham we learn the importance of being persistent about Gods work. Once others hear the Good News, theyll realize how good it really is. Yertle the Turtle and the Beatitudes teach us about building a firm foundation in Jesus Christ. If we dont, our house will crumble as with the man who built his house on the sand. Kemp starts each chapter with a Biblical passage and summarizes and/or prints excerpts from the Dr. Seuss book he is referencing. He then presents the lesson we are to learn and apply in our modern society. This 90 page, softcover book can be used with your family or small group. Although the author pegs it for older students, it could be used effectively with younger children. If possible, get a copy of the actual Dr. Seuss book to read before doing the Gospel lesson. What an interesting twist on an old favorite! ~ Donna

A "perfect" family devotional. If the idea of a "perfect' anything bothers you a bit, reserve judgment until after you hear all that's packed into this resource. First of all there are daily devotionals centered around the awesomeness or the uniqueness of various aspects of God's creation. Storms, common dirt, the mystery of migration, trees, water, stars, sun, symbiosis, critters we dislike, fruit, tides, senses, and so much more. Each devotional is packed with significant and interesting information with a scripture reference and passage to be read as the focal point. To really bring home the lessons and applications of these devotionals as well as to make the whole experience more enjoyable for the youngest members of the family, there's also a weekly story. These stories can be divided up, reading a little each day or read all at once on a day that has more time available. As you might expect, there are some questions; actually, there are two types of questions. Questions for Review are easier, based on factual information and geared to a family's younger children. Questions for Discussion are for the older children, giving them an opportunity to apply the teachings to family life. There are thirteen themes each with seven devotionals and a story. A helpful scope and sequence chart in the back of the book gives the family leader an overall perspective as well as read-ahead information. Wholesome, interesting, God-honoring, thought-provoking and faith-kindling. A "perfect" devotional resource. 348 pgs. pb ~ Janice

This is one down-to-earth gardening guide. Parents will appreciate the thorough contents. In the beginning, sections are dedicated to helping children with one of the most important things - staying organized and on top of their garden. They plan out a garden calendar, which can be started even in the winter to ensure that everything is ready on time. Then it goes over the tools needed. Next is the important planning stage. In this section, they pick their garden's shape, size, and content. Reasonable plots, plants, and locations for plants are discussed. Next, you are ready to get seeds. The author shares places to find seeds, buying seeds, and making homemade seed tape. Then it moves on to preparing your bed, with compost, markers, sowing, and bug helps. After you've done all the initial work, you'll need these tips on watering, weeding, feeding, and mulching. The next few chapters offer step by step directions on 4 different gardens you can duplicate - the salad bowl garden (lots of vegetables), the moon garden, the butterflies buffet (a garden catered to butterflies' tastes), and the healing cross garden (herbs). The last chapter offers gardening options to people without usable yards, so even if you live in an apartment you can still share in the joy of gardening. Other fun ideas are included throughout such as making your own potato chips and popcorn, carrot cake, radish rosettes, pumpkin pots, pressed flower crafts, candied violets, blossoms on ice, growing catnip for your cat, and much more. Besides all these great gardening ideas, each chapter in the book also closes out with a related devotional. These sections offer short readings on topics such as "The Lord Planted a Garden," "A Time for Everything," "Don't Let the Weeds Choke You," "Growing in the Light," "The Garden of Gethsemane," and "A Second Chance to Grow." Attached to the book is a plantable bookmark to start your kids in the growing business. - Melissa

Think of this as a light God & the History of Art or maybe a precursor. It's a 1-year art curriculum incorporating art instruction and art history. The book opens with a "History of Art in a Nutshell" written strictly from a Christian worldview (of course). Barry then turns to instruction using colored pencils, with 12 lessons beginning with color theory and progressing to drawing from nature. A discussion of "God and Art" follows, addressing topics like creativity, the Great Creator, and nudity in art from a Biblical perspective. The rest of the book covers Christian Artists: Fra Angelico, Albrecht Durer, Rembrandt van Rijn, Jean Francois Millet, Carl Block, Georges Rouault, The Nazarenes, and the Pre-Raphaelites. Each study contains biographical information about the artist, black-and-white illustrations of some of his works, and related art lessons. There are 68 lessons in all, effectively integrating art instruction with the well-written and informative text.

For those of you who want to teach using the classical method, the authors of this book, Harvey and Laurie Bluedorn, have long believed and implemented this in their own homeschool. In this book they combine their knowledge and experience to present a spiritual and philosophical foundation and a practical program for Christian homeschooling in the classical style. The first four chapters discuss the reasoning and logic of teaching with classical education, a discussion of why parents should be in charge of their students' education, problems with classroom (public) schools, and an explanation and description of what the trivium is. The next three chapters study one element of the trivium each - language, logic, and rhetoric. Each chapter presents the topic, arguments for teaching it, guidelines for teaching, where to start, what children should be learning at appropriate age levels, and other tips and advice for incorporating these core subjects. Chapter eight follows the same basic format, delving into the study of literature. In chapter nine, the Bluedorns offer principles for the study of historical literature. The following chapter provides lots of advice and help for different methods and approaches to homeschooling in light of the trivium, such as the Charlotte Mason approach, unschooling, unit studies, and others. Part two of the book, The Practical Trivium, hold chapters listing things children should do at particular ages - ten things to do with students before age ten, ten through twelve, thirteen through fifteen, sixteen through eighteen, nineteen and onward, and finally the last chapter, Life's Goals Begin at Home. Appendix one includes 16 different articles discussing the trivium, education, and other related issues. Appendix two provides an thorough resource list, outlining general resources and those for language arts & English, rhetoric, literature, history, government, law and economics, languages, mathematics, logic, Bible and theology, philosophy, science, art and music, and other miscellaneous resources. While you may not agree with all of the personal philosophy in this book, if you want to teach from the trivium and are looking for a guide to implement a classical education in your homeschool, this is a very complete and thorough guide from experienced authors. - Melissa
